Under the endless sky. A thousand days of sea, adventure, and freedom: around the world on a sailboat. Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 343 ratings

A true story that reads like a novel. A man and a woman leave a normal lifestyle of home and office, similar to that of millions of others, and set off to sail around the world on a sailboat. They uncover distant lands, forgotten archipelagos, emotions, fears, and incredible landing places. Large and small adventures, compellingly told in simple language that will captivate right up to the final page.

"Under the endless sky" is the book that introduced Elisabetta Eördegh and Carlo Auriemma as sailors and writers and brought them fame amongst lovers of sailing and adventure.
The book tells of a man and a woman who leave their normal existence of home and office, similar to that of millions of others, and plunge into the boundless immensity of the oceans, to see what lies beyond the horizon. They uncover distant lands, forgotten archipelagos, people that live their lives away from everything and everybody, places that are still unspoilt and uncontaminated and above all they find emotions, fears, unforeseen encounters, tempests and some dashingly courageous landings.
Large and small adventures which the authors relate in a compelling style and simple language that will captivate to the final page.
The book is a fresh and open window on the world, passing with ease from encounters with pirates off the coast of Columbia, to immersion into the pristine domain of the animals of the Galapagos Islands, from the atmospheric serenity of fabulous South Sea Islands to the great solitude of long voyages between sky and waves.
"Under the endless sky" is the story of how the sea can profoundly change the very existence and way of thinking of those who have embraced its intimacy.

Sailing round the world is easy, fulfilling and wonderful. The last words of this amazing book about a voyage around the world in a sailing boat. Elisabetta and Carlo have written a great book about their time on board a small sailing boat as they sailed around the world. The people they met on other boats were helpful and shared their knowledge of good places to visit as well as sharing charts. Also they met some wonderful people on tiny islands, many of them very poor. They were given a great welcome and invited into houses, given gifts and invited to great feasts with so much food that was different from what they were used to. No matter how little these people had, had, they shared it and gave then food for the next part of their voyage. This book I found hard to put down. It was always just one more chapter. Do not miss out on a great read. A book for all sailors including armchair sailors!

Well translated (English version) tale of a sail around the world. The story jumps around a bit and the reader is often left guessing at the context. For example, the story jumps from single-handed sailing to double-handed without explanation. Or a broken engine is suddenly appears fixed. This is the main reason why I withheld my fifth star.

As we dream, plan and prepare to set sail, this is one of the most encouraging books I've read. It is beautifully written, evoking the imagination and sharing the experiences as if you're there. Throughout they maintain a wonderful optimism in the face of many challenges. It feels like you're part of the family, both intimate and hilarious. I read great swathes of it to my partner and

A very well written and compelling work...most circumanav books are very samey...here C and L differentiate themselves beautifully in both destination and prose...this book stands apart from the pack and makes you WANT to keep reading...very good!!

Having read countless sailing books and myself being both a professional sailor and a yachtsman, I found both this book (and their others) quite exceptional. The way in which they describe their various adventures and, in particular, the way in which individual incidents are painted, makes one's own heart feel every single one of their emotions, from real fear to pure and unalloyed happiness. These are the only two books I have ever kept on my Kindle.

Thoroughly enjoyed this account of sailing a yacht around the world. An inspirational read that from the many others they meet as well as themselves shows that actually almost anyone can do it, you just need a seaworthy boat and a sense of adventure

Wonderful capture of sailing around the world in late 80's early 90's you can't help but think with progress a lot of their experiences in remote islands would be hard to replicate. How lucky they were there then!

5.0 out of 5 stars Meeting new friends in remote places
Reviewed in the United States on 22 July 2018
The authors recount an interesting round the world voyage in which they visited many different people on remote islands. The sketches of the people they met are sympathetic and engaging. The accounts of how they sailed the open oceans in a small sailboat and the danger of cyclones are clear and not overly technical. The focus on diet and cooking are interesting and show how important a well designed galley is, with restraints for everything including the cook in stormy seas. The authors seamlessly swap the narrative as the story progresses so you get their individual views throughout the book.

It is a fun read and I couldn't stop turning the pages!

A bit dated, but it brought back memories of a trip I did back in the 1980's. Easy to read and a great pleasure to be without the endless Americanisms in lots of books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Colourful & Inspiring

This is a delightful narrative about circumnavigation under sail. The sailors, Italian, flavour their tale with colour & movement not typical of this genre so its vocabulary & perspective are like fresh breezes.

Also refreshing was the sailors' adventurous attitude when it came to sailing into waters perhaps that were less safe & more remote. The authors embraced & accepted with a certain curiosity the different cultural ways. Bravo Carlo & Elizabetta.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful adventure with Carlo and Elisabetta
Reviewed in the United States on 27 April 2014
Read it straight through in one sitting! Not to say that it's short, (Amazon says 256 pages) but rather that it was so compelling... perfect, in fact. Beautiful, lyrical prose in English so fluent as to humble poor nearly monolingual me. Makes me want to find a reasonable boat and leave tomorrow; makes me think that could even be possible. Yes, the voyage was decades ago so some of the details must be outdated, and no there's not a lot of technical information as other reviewers have noted, but it's a wonderful memoir that made me feel like I accompanied Carlo and Elisabetta on their maiden circumnavigation. Highly recommended when you find yourself yearning for the sound of the sea slipping past your hull or the caress of the soft, Southern Pacific breezes against your cheek.
