Celina Bayberry never thought a part-time job could change her life, until she meets the hot and untouchable Aaron Jamison. Strangely enough, she can’t shake the feeling that he’s stalking her. And when a yellow-eyed stranger takes interest in her too, Celina discovers a dangerous secret: Her co-workers are Miew Demos–creatures linked to Bastet, the feline goddess of Egypt and members of a clan called Miews, shifters who can transform from human to feline in an instant.

They, and she, are being hunted by a wolf clan, the Iew Keftey, who will not rest until every last one of the Miews is annihilated. Celina’s life unravels as she is thrust into this age-old battle of brother against brother. Meanwhile, she’s losing her heart to Aaron who may or may not have lost his to her. And her own Bayberry family history is hiding something… something that will forever link her destiny with that of the Miews.

Celina and the clan need each other, but is either strong enough to face what is to come?

Absolutely brilliant, could not put my kindle down. Started reading it around 11am on Sunday morning and finished it Monday morning. I feel sad that if finished and wanted to jump into the book to see what else happened. That's when you can tell what a brilliant read it is. Thank you so much for writing this book :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyed but should come with a warning

I read a lot in this genre and can't tell you how many times the books in have disappointed me. Why do I continue to read it then? Because of gems like this.

The story was great. It sucked me in from the beginning and kept me there through the end.

I love the take on how the shifters came be and why they are at war with each other. I love that the main character is a strong one and I loved the romance between her and Aaron.

However, this book really should come with a warning that says something along the lines of, "Read at your own risk because once you start you will not stop until you have reached the end, even if you have other things you really should be doing besides reading."

    4.0 out of 5 stars 3.7 stars: Markings by S B Roozenboom

Lina's life is shaken up by a series of strange incidents, including unsettling dreams, encounters with wildcats and large wolves, physical changes, and a confusing relationship with new acquaintance Aaron.

(Though reviews are inherently subjective, I prefer to provide some organization to my opinions through the use of a personal rubric. The following notes may contain spoilers.)

Plot and Setting: 3.5 -- Plot has many unique elements, no major holes, and a sense of focus. The major plot arc of Lina becoming Alpha of the Miew Demos clan is strong and resolved. However, the plot really falls down on the details. There are significant errors in logic and consistency: Lina's apparent lack of familiarity with Wildcat Country and longing for "home" near the ocean doesn't mesh with the fact that she moved 3 years ago, and later says she has mostly bad memories of her house in Seaside. Time doesn't pass normally, with hours or days missing entirely or repeated. Etc. Plot points in sub-plots are dropped or not resolved, leaving a semi-satisfying, semi-cliffhanger ending--and there is no sequel, so it really should have no cliffhanger at all.

Characters: 3.5 -- Main character (Lina) is relatable, interesting, and dynamic. Her growth into accepting the supernatural and her role as clan Alpha is well done. Other characters are more stereotyped or simplified. Relationships between characters are not especially well developed, but what is there is decent. We see glimpses of Lina and Kat as best friends/surrogate sisters, and definitely see Aaron's protective devotion to Lina.

Mechanics and Writing: 3.5 -- Scattered typos, punctuation issues, and word errors, including a few major mistakes. Another run through to edit errors is definitely needed, though the story was strong enough that the errors didn't bog me down. Good use of 1st person POV. Generally skillful writing.

Redeeming Value: 3.5 -- Incidental uplifting themes. Lina doubts her ability to be anything but an overlooked nerd, but in the end rises to the occasion and quite smoothly takes on her new leadership role. Sex, alcohol, violence, etc, are not glorified, but some shaky ground, eg. Lina and Aaron's make-out session that nearly went further.

Personal Enjoyment: 4.5 -- I liked it a lot. Highly enjoyable and very entertaining, with perhaps an issue or two that tempered my pleasure. Definitely one I'll reread.

Moving to a place teaming with wolves and wild cats Lina figured she would just enjoy the nature stuff and try to live her life. It was a pretty place and Mom was happy. She begins to realize that changes are happening and her life will be changing forever. Roozenboom totally amazed me with this story. Girl finds out she is a shifter but it is in the process of becoming that the character grows on you and you find yourself wishing for a sequel. Love this story. Well written and full of reading entertainment.
