- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 May 2013A compelling story of family, love and choices. The interplay of four generations, It gripped me from the start. The characters are totally believable, and I found myself needing to know what happened next. It is intelligently written and gently steers the reader through the undulating and, at times disturbing events of the Duncan family. Mother and Daughter, Helen and Moira are the main characters, both strong and positive, but faced with the unpredictability of life it is fascinating to see how each of them reacts.
I loved this family saga, the story draws you in and makes you think...and that's exactly what a good book should do!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 October 2016It was a thoroughly enjoyable read, not a fast paced page Turner.
At times a little slow but also surprised me on several occasions. Not a typical romance story. I usually like a wrapped up ending, this one could beg a sequel! Though on second thoughts, I felt
Well life is like that, full of chances, hopes, regrets, challenges and this book left me with the feeling " make the most of life" .
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 March 2015I really gave this book a try. I thought at first that I might enjoy it, but I gradually got bogged down by too much dialogue, too much description, too many events that didn't move the plot along. I appreciate the glimpses of everyday family life, but it started to get too humdrum, nothing happening. The book is also let down by mistakes and typos: "it's" instead of "its", many times; "you're" for "your" and vice versa; "peels of laughter," etc. etc. Just too careless and distracting. If the author could have cut the length by about half, learnt to be more concise, and cleaned up the grammar mistakes, I might have finished the book, but as it was, there was just not enough motivation to learn what happened to her characters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Read
I was initially drawn to this story as it is set in Scotland during the period when I was born in Edinburgh and the time I immigrated to Canada. It vividly brought my childhood back to life and Ms. Ross' descriptive words and believable characters drew me in quickly. Helen and Moira, the two main characters in this book, have encountered their fair share of emotional turmoil and the book takes you through the healing process with them. This book is witty with a lot of heart, and the author has a real flair for dialogue which is evident from page one. A great first novel and I can't wait for her second book!

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to like this book
This was a book that I couldn't wait to read. It grabbed me at the beginning, but then it really fell short. I had a very hard time with the abruptness in which the author left things...she would start new chapters ending the last one with a problem or incident left unresolved. I also found the abrupt change from the story being about Helen all of a sudden going to Moira. The book was choppy for lack of a better term. Moira's relationship with Joe, Laurie, and even Andy lacked credibility and I found her one minute being in love with Joe, then Laurie, then Joe again annoying.
The author leaves you with no sense of closure between Sandy, Brian, and Helen nor with Moira, Laurie, and Joe.
The friendships of Mary, Louise and Bella were also left in the lurch and I found the author's writing in the heavy Scottish dialect in regards to Bella to be very distracting.
All in all, this book had the startings of a great novel, but fell way short.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre
I love saga's and the description of the story seemed to be just down my street. However, I was quite disappointed. The first half of the book about Helen was good, kept me turning the page and looking forward to the story opening out. In the second half of the book which is Moira's story everything changed. I found it slow and boring in parts and one of the characters who was called Liza in the first half of the book changed her name to Lisa in the second part. It didn't seem as though the second part of the book was written by the same person as in the first part. There was a lot of descriptive text and not enough dialogue. Sorry but I would not recommend this book, it was a free book and I would have been disappointed if I had paid for it.
