VANISHED and DARK SECRET: Complete two-book series Kindle Edition

3.5 out of 5 stars 547 ratings

VANISHED is a chilling tale with a shocking conclusion, about the strange disappearance of a child...A schoolboy hurried along narrow deserted streets clutching a satchel of books under his arm. The murky winter twilight gathered stealthily around him. As he passed by the corner grocery store, he waved to the proprietor, who returned the greeting. He didn’t have far to go now; his home was just the third house down from the corner. But he never made it. For somewhere in that short distance of just about one hundred feet, he simply vanished and was never seen again. Fifteen years later, the case still remained unsolved.

Under its former title Monsters in our Midst, this novel received the following reviews:
REVIEW FROM COFFEE TIME ROMANCE
"Ms. Lewis brings to light one of the horrors that any parent prays they never experience. The unknown would be like a cancer that just eats away at your very soul. As a parent, I can only hope that there are people out there like Scott Preston, who take it upon themselves to keep a case like this alive. The real tragedy in this story is the fact that no matter how horrible the truth, it is so much better than not knowing."
REVIEW FROM DARK ANGELS
"Monsters In Our Midst” by Karen Lewis will chill you to the bone. What an excellent suspense thriller to get lost in."
REVIEW FROM BROWLER BOOKS
"Karen Lewis takes you back in time to solve a cold case. She has written a very interesting mystery that will leave you completely shocked at the outcome. This book will hold your interest from page one all the way to the very last page. I would recommend this book. 4.5 stars"
REVIEW FROM MANIC READERS
I really enjoyed Monsters in Our Midst. Karen Lewis has a fluent, easy writing style which draws the reader in. Her characters are well-drawn and believable. I was particularly taken with Scott's Aunt Violet. You get the feeling throughout that somebody knows something and isn't telling, but you can't work out who. Is it the neighbor who was away at the time, but seems a bit shifty? Or the truck driver who taught part-time at the boy's school and may have been seen in his company on the fatal day? Or even the boy's own mother, who seems far too unemotional about the whole thing and can only deal with the situation by insisting that her son is still alive?
DARK SECRET
The exciting new sequel to the blockbuster bestseller, VANISHED, is a labyrinth of lies, deceit, infidelity and murderous intent that will not disappoint.
“This is even better than the original.” Reader Reviews
“Nail biting suspense that will keep you guessing.” Mystery Circle

all in all, a good story.

I am so desperately sad that the book ended. The way the author keeps you guessing. I guessed very early on who was involved but the story kept taking twists and turns and although I had guessed who one of the people were that was involved, I had got it totally wrong in so many other ways. I loved the twists at every corner and just couldn't help but keep reading even as my eyes burned from sleep deprivation. Wonderfully written, and just like the characters you get a hunch about, the author manages to throw your thoughts and suspicions in the air and when you think it's all over, your thoughts are thrown up in awry again. I would have given this 10 stars if I could have! Excellent! Addictive! Wonderfully well written! It's refreshing to read a book where the author allows you to picture things in your own mind and you haven't got to read through pages and pages of drivel and descriptions that have no relevance and only succeed in wasting paper when it's gone to print. Thank you Karen Lewis for crediting the reader with a bit of intelligence. I am now a fan.

I chose this book as a Kindle First deal, It is a short book, about 100 pages, so not sure if it is actually a novel or novella. The story is very gripping and just keeps you turning the pages. I think a few more pages to build the characters because even now I have finished it I still don't feel I know the characters. Very good book and story even though I worked out the murderer quite early on .

Reading this at the moment & I don't find any of the characters warm or particularly engaging & some of the dialogue stilted.

The writer is obsessed with hypnosis, asking if the reporter needed hypnosis to remember more about a brief attack. If a woman wanted to remember an incident that happened 15 years before & another woman to see if it would jog her memory about a sign on a van, that she said she would remember if she saw if again. So many people held vital information from the police & I found the excuses for this didn't really ring right with me not very believable.

I did finish this book & I would be in no great rush to read another by this author

How to cram a story into 100 pages and fail. There are too many characters introduced in almost machine-gun fashion; some of them have relevance, some not, and that's annoying if not down-right confusing. Additionally, all the characters are stock figures. By the end of chapter 3, the main character remains a characterless journalist with an aunt who has a German shepherd. The journalism and detective work left me cringing. Sorry, try any big-name detective author and you'll agree.

I only lost 77 pence on this one. An easy lark for making money out of woeful short stories which should be sold as a set.

Brilliant crime short story that has numerous twists and turns. It could have been an excellent novel had the writer added more investigative details etc however for what it is it's a good read. Took me just over an hour to read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A very disappointing novel. No character development and the story, which could have been so very dramatic, had no oomph.
    The writing felt very flat.

I give this book 5 stars because, it keeps you wanting to read it. You won't even realize how much time has passed as you read.
I like the way it keeps you wondering and throws a "monkey wrench " in your ideas.
The only thing I can think of that I didn't like was that it ended; I would've kept on reading it for much longer.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes a mystery that keeps you wondering until the ending.

    This was a quick read.
Scott Preston, a reporter for the Morning Herald, is asked to follow up on a 15 year-old cold case of a missing boy, Martin Perry. Martin disappeared on his way home from school and was never seen again. He was assumed dead, although no body was ever recovered.
As Scott begins his investigation, he discovers that Julia Perry, Martin's Mother, still believes he is alive. Everett Perry kind of goes along because he loves his wife.
There are several characters introduced in this short story, making the reader give thought to "whodunit" . It is a fairly quick read, with a surprise ending.
If you like fast moving mysteries, give this one a try.
  • Vistadei
3.0 out of 5 stars I liked the first half of this book
Reviewed in the United States on 13 March 2016
I liked the first half of this book. The situation intrigued me and there were quite a few good suspects. Unfortunately about half way through, it seemed a second author stepped in with a deadline to meet. We started jumping a year forward in time, re-hashing the situation and suspects we just read about, then another two year leap. Several unlikely situations were introduced and dealt with in a short paragraph and contributed nothing to the story line. For example one of the suspects who was interviewed a couple times contacts for help getting her son off drugs, and in the next sentence the son stopped doing drugs and we move on.

There are a lot of good suspects, but the person whom I initially thought would be the culprit was indeed and everything else brushed off as error or memory mistakes. This made the ending very predictable and left me feeling like the time was just wasted with getting to know the other suspects.
