USA TODAY Bestseller

Scarlett Goodwin’s world is divided into Before and After.

Before she agreed to tutor Tucker Price, college junior Scarlett was an introvert, struggling with her social anxiety disorder and determined to not end up living in a trailer park like her mother and her younger sister. A mathematics major, she goes to her classes, to her job in the tutoring lab, and then hides in the apartment she shares with her friend, Caroline.

After junior Tucker Price, Southern University’s star soccer player enters the equation, her carefully plotted life is thrown off its axis. Tucker’s failing his required College Algebra class. With his eligibility at risk, the university chancellor dangles an expensive piece of computer software for the math department if Scarlett agrees to privately tutor him.

Tucker’s bad boy, womanizer reputation makes Scarlett wary of any contact, let alone spending several hours a week in close proximity. But from her first encounter, she realizes Tucker isn’t the person everyone else sees. He carries a mountain of secrets which she suspects hold the reason for his self-destructive behavior. But the deeper she delves into the cause of his pain, the deeper she gets sucked into his chaos.

Will Scarlett find the happiness she’s looking for, or will she be caught in Tucker’s aftermath?

This book isn't a soppy romance (well the first half definitely isn't) nor is it a nerdy-girl-meets-popular-boy type plot. It's more about not allowing a tragic childhood/ upbringing define your future. It also conveys the importance of balance and hope.

I enjoyed this book because generally the intelligent/ nerdy girl in these type of books doesn't seem to live up to her famous intelligent persona. However, in this novel Scarlett really is intelligent and extremely ambitious. She doesn't allow anything to interfere with that. The author manifests this intelligence in Scarlett's speech and so forth without compromising the fact that Scarlett is meant to be 20.

Tucker isn't your typical arrogant jock. In these novels generally he'd be the rich, tough popular jock. However, Tucker has suffered a similar tragic childhood as Scarlett and this brings them closer.

It's not always you meet a heroine who is a math geek. In most novels she's studying an arty subject, hence this novel was completely refreshing. It's not a silly chick lit or Twilight rubbish.

My only complaint is that it was too short. I think it would have been better if the novel were longer and spanned 2 years.

Before i read this, i thought it would be a geeky girl meets hotshot, popular soccer player and they fall madly in love, The end but i was pleasantly surprised that the story goes a lot deeper and that's why it take me long to become hooked with After Math.

So you have Scarlet, the geeky, smart, talented student at university who wants to work for the CIA and spends a lot of time studying rather than as her friend and roommate, Caroline says "living life". Her roommate and friend Tina want her to start going out and meeting guys and have a social life but Scarlet suffers from anxiety so finds it hard being center of attention or being sociable. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she is approached by the soccer star of the university, Tucker Price. He wants her to tutor him in algebra as he needs to get his grades up. Scarlet spirals into a completely different world tutoring Tucker Price. He is a player and very cocky when out with his social circle and that's how everyone knows him. Scarlet is shocked to learn that person is not the real person. Tucker is quite smart, caring and they get on really well but the problem, the both have secrets from the past that they find hard to talk about so it puts a strain on their friendship. It's a very roller coaster relationship between the two but to me, that's what kept me gripped.

Truly wonderful story and great characters. It's was definitely a story that kept me gripped and completely hooked from the beginning. Love it!

This book is part of a series but each can be read as a standalone. Well I loved this book, I found it hard to put down, I just wanted to know what happened next. Scarlett has had a bad start in life but decided to be the exception to the rule about trailer parks. She's smart, focused and determined, although she closes herself off to protect herself. A self proclaimed math geek, the polar opposite of Tucker Price. He's the school hero, has every girl drooling and plays soccer. Scarlett has never thought about the smart cocky guy who sleeps his way around, but when she's asked to tutor him so he maintains his scholarship but also gaining the math department a much needed programme she can't refuse, this sends her anxiety into overdrive but what she gets when she comes face to face with Tucker is not what everyone would expect. He shows her a side of himself nobody else ever sees and eventually they begin a friendship nobody understands apart from them.
I have to say this book has a great story, the writing is good, the characters are great and the build up is amazing. The much needed angst is present but you feel so much hope for the way Scarlett and Tucker begin to feel for the other and can't help but will them to give in to their feelings. This is a very sweet love story about two people from different backgrounds who are broken for different reasons but recognise what the other needs and feel a connection which makes them stronger together. I loved this book and would recommend to anyone who enjoys a beautiful love story.

Denise Grover-Swank is the author of the Rose Gardner Mystery Series (starting with Twenty Eight and a Half Wishes), the Chosen Series in the paranormal genre and The Curse Keepers Series in the sci-fi/ fantasy genre. Clearly a versatile writer.

I really enjoyed meeting the cast of characters in this New Adult gem.

Scarlett Goodwin is a maths genius who grew up in a trailer park. She spends the majority of her time either in class, studying for class, or tutoring other students in the math (I really want to write maths, here) lab. In walks Tucker Price; cocky, womanizing, soccer star. They share a class together - one in which he always turns up late. His dedication to his schooling is lackluster, at best.

Tucker needs a tutor to help him pass maths and keep his soccer scholarship and he insists on having Scarlett as his tutor. Scarlett isn’t keen. She could not be more opposite to Tucker. He loves to party, she breaks into a sweat at the thought.

Initially Tucker treats their tutoring sessions as a joke. Scarlett lets him know that she won’t waste her time putting up with any rubbish. In doing so, she becomes the first person to treat him like he’s an average boy, rather than a rock star. She wants nothing from him, but his respect and a genuine effort to learn. With this realization he transforms into a thoughtful, vulnerable enigma.

As the layers are peeled away from both of their pasts, they help each other towards attaining freedom, but Tucker’s future is calling. He’s torn between a life he never truly hoped for and someone else’s dream.

Loved it, loved it, LOVED IT.

Scarlett is so guarded, almost completely closed off and Tucker sees through it. He practically reads her mind. I adored this couple. They go through quite a bit of turmoil on their journey. This book is definitely a roller-coaster ride of emotions. That’s what makes it so good.

In this book we also meet Scarlett’s best friend, Caroline, who becomes the female protagonist in Redesigned. Her story is also brilliant. Review coming next week.

    Enjoy. 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect College Romance; sweet, moving, poignant and romantic!
Reviewed in the United States on 26 January 2014
LOVED this book. LOVED IT! It is the perfect college romance: sweet, poignant and romantic.

Tucker is a hot soccer player and he is the university's man whore. Scarlet is shy, beautiful, smart math student that suffers from panic attacks. Tucker is on academic probation and Scarlet is assigned as his math tutor. Slowly they start to spend time with each other and before they know it they become friends; friends that help each other while trying to fight their attraction.

Tucker becomes a different person, a better person in Scarlett's company and tries to help her overcome her panic attacks. Scarlett on the other hand, tries to be Tucker's support as he fights to overcome his troubled past. Slowly but surely they end falling for each other.

This is a really great college romance. It is well written and the characters have a great deal of depth and emotions; frankly I just fell in love with them and with this book. It really is great story. It is the first book in a series (the second book deals with Scarlet's room mate) and it ends on a high note.

A super enjoyable read; sweet and romantic.
