Julia Gousseva has been writing since she was a little girl in Moscow, Russia, when her grandmother gave her an old leather-bound journal with yellowed pages. The first half of the journal was filled with stories and poems that her grandmother wrote when she was still in school. “Now, it’s your turn to continue writing stories,” she said.

Years later, Julia revised and published some of the stories she wrote in that journal as "Twelve Months of a Soviet Childhood," a collection of short stories that portray a magical and innocent time oblivious to political regimes and problems. Her grandmother, a typical Russian babushka, is a prominent character in the book. Babushka is taking care of children, of her beloved red roses, and is proper in all respects. Thus, when the two little girls in her care end up in a precarious situation in the middle of Gorky Park, babushka has to compose herself before taking decisive action.

Julia was born and raised in Russia when it was still a part of the Soviet Union, and even today Russia remains a mystery not only to the West, but to its own people as well. Julia’s history professors referred to Russia as a country with unpredictable past because every time a new leader came to power, all history books were revised and rewritten. Many of Julia’s stories are set against the backdrop of Russia’s dramatic history.

In addition to being a writer, Julia teaches a variety of critical thinking, critical reading, and writing classes. She loves Russian literature, especially Russian folklore and its unique characters: Baba Yaga the Russian Witch, the magical Firebird, Leshi the Woodsprite, and many others. To help today’s kids enjoy the ancient wisdom of Russian fairy-tales, Julia wrote Adventures of Alex and Katie series where two American kids travel into the world of Russian fairy-tales through a magical fireplace.

Julia and her family live in the American Southwest.

This book contains a wonderful collection of short stories for children. Each story is individual but has a reassuring tone and a message for children to take away with them.
Some of the stories are about animals, others about people but they are all believable characters and their tales are interestingly woven.
These stories are of a good length to retain children's interest and engagement. They are also written in a traditional style as to be appropriate to adults wishing to regain some feel of childhood.

I am not sure about you but I have a little kid inside me. I love reading short stories for kids even though I download them for my nieces and nephews. They are just so innocent and they make you think like a child. I love it how a child’s brain wanders around and question everything it comes across. But I have never read a children’s story by a Russian author before so the stories in this book really gave me a little perspective of Russian culture and life. I think it’s quite a fun reading these stories to your kid because you actually start enjoying them yourself and when they need to hear a bit more, you don’t mind at all.

What a wonderful collection of short stories both my kids enjoyed as much as I did. Every setting was delightfully different, every situation unique, inhabited with characters one couldn't help but to feel connected and miss when each story ended. Both me and my kids loved every moment of the Tall Tales for Short People!

A charming collection of short stories for younger readers. Fun to read aloud or for new readers to enjoy on their own. As an adult, I found them entertaining and fun to read even though I’m not the target audience.

I worked in child care for 14 years and there were times I never knew which age group I would be working with when I walked in the door. I wish I'd had this book back then. Each story is written for a different age group, and while the settings are familiar, each one is written to engage a new level of learning--such as language used. Wonderful concept. Wonderful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collection of stories that will grow up with your kids

"Tall Tales for Short People" comes in handy when you have kids of different ages. There are a variety of stories in this book, and you can clearly see which stories are written for which age-group.

Some stories play with familiar settings of fairy tales, like "A New Job" or "The Bottle" providing recognition of some of the characters for the kids while delivering a new and original story. Some of the stories, like "Jungle Music," are really suited even for toddlers, with simple imagery, concepts, and sounds; some, like the lead story, "Josh's Scary Night," will work for slightly older kids.

There are stories in here that parents would like as well: "A Magical Dinner," "The Time Machine," and "A Life-Saving Invention," to name a few.

Surprisingly, my favorite story from this collection was "Little Dragonfly." While it's clearly written for younger kids, I found myself rather enjoying reading it. It was giving up a flavor of an African folktale, very enjoyable.

It was fascinating to see how the language was adapted to the type of a story and the age group for which the story is intended. A very good collection of stories that will grow up with your kids.

Loved this passage from the opening story, "The dim light of the stairwell cast a dark shadow on the elevator door as he waited. Heavy footsteps echoed from below. Josh could feel his heart beating faster and louder as he peered into the darkness..." Took me back to my youth when I would watch the old Vincent Price movies on my Grandma's black and white tv and scare the daylights out of me. Story ends innocently enough as well as another tale I really liked of two classroom friends building a time machine for a classroom project that really worked. Just so you know the titles of the stories in the Table of Contents with handy links that are not otherwise listed in the book description I thought I would go ahead and spell them below:

    1) Josh's Scary Night
    2) A New Job
    3) Beaver and Hedgehog
    4) Little Dragonfly
    5) Alicia's New Home
    6) The Time Machine
    7) A Magical Dinner
    8) Grandma's Gift
    9) A Life-Saving Invention
    10) The Bottle
    11) Jungle Music

As wide an assortment as there are I'm sure you'll find something to interest you as I did. A very good book that I recommend!
