CREATURES OF APPETITE (Emma Kane / Jacob Thorne Book 1) Kindle Edition
“You’re used to clever plots, complex characters, twisted cases and brilliant writing. Few things can surprise you, because most times you figure out who the murderer is before the book ends. Well, let me tell you something: ‘Creatures of Appetite’ by Todd Travis is like nothing you’ve read before. Prepare yourself to be hooked from the very first pages, to forget that you need to eat or sleep, and to be taken by surprise by a twisted ending that you could have never guessed.” —Jo Ammons, NY Books Examiner
“If you start reading this book thinking that you’ll be able to put it down before bedtime, you’re wrong. You’ll only be able to fall asleep after you turn the last page. Usually, readers who read a lot of crime novels gain the ability to guess how everything is going to end, or at least suspect. It’s not going to happen with “Creatures of Appetite”, because the ending will come as a shock.” —Top Books Worth Reading
“No, as a reader you won’t guess who the murderer is before Jacob Thorne puts two and two together, but that’s not what makes Creatures of Appetite stand out in its genre. What makes it really worth reading is on the very last pages.” —All Fantasy Worlds
They call it the Heartland Child Murders.
Everyone else calls it a nightmare.
Locked doors don’t stop him.
He leaves no trace behind.
He only takes little girls.
His nickname …
The Iceman.
A deranged serial killer roams wintry rural Nebraska, targeting little girls, with a demented purpose no one can fathom.
FBI Special Agent EMMA KANE, a former DC cop considered to be damaged goods, is assigned to babysit burned-out profiler JACOB THORNE as they both fly to Nebraska to catch this maniac. Thorne is erratic, abrasive and unpredictably brilliant, but what he and Kane find in the heartland is much more than anyone bargained for, especially when the Iceman challenges them personally, where it hurts most.
The clock is ticking and a little girl’s life is on the line.
And maybe even more with that, once they find out what he’s really up to.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 May 2015I selected this book after reading the blurb. I like a good detective book every now and then, and this one had a bit of an interesting twist with one of the main characters Thorne working on the case as an FBI profiler. Thorne and another detective Kane are assigned to support local troops on a high profile serial killer trail, a terrible situation that affects them both in different ways.
The relationship between the two main characters although rocky to start with, established throughout the book, pulling in the reader. Plenty of twists in the case to keep the detective duo (and the reader) guessing all the way to the end. The setting of the novel provided quite an eerie backdrop too, a town in the midst of a deep snow storm.
The authors' style is fast-paced and intriguing but also manages to capture the humanity within the characters and the difficult situations they address.
A great read and an author I am looking forward to reading more from.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 March 2020It does seem that one of the most common tropes in crime fiction is that of the quirky law man. In Creatures of Appetite we meet Thorne, unsociable, chess playing extraordinaire. Partnered up with Emma Kane, a woman with her own issues, they get sent to Nebraska on the trail of a serial killer dubbed The Iceman.
I enjoyed this book, it was a pleasing quick read. Thorne seems to heavily rely on similar characteristics as Gregory House, which I don’t mind. We don’t learn too much about Thorne’s background, and without giving any spoilers, that in itself is important things start to add up at the end. The final twist was not in anyway surprising, however because the book was so enjoyable I don’t have much of an issue regarding the easily apparent twists.
This was a solid 3.5 rounded up to 4 crime read, and I will more than likely pick up the next book in the series now. I want to see how the author develops this.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2015The Iceman has been killing little girls. To make it worse, he is obviously someone with good understanding of forensics. Kane and Thorne are top FBI profilers with very little to work on.
However suddenly it gets personal.
This book is really well written. The plot is clever and fast moving and the characters well developed. I thought the relationship between Thorne and Kane was very clever. It added to the suspense, rather than distracted.
I will definitely be looking out for Todd Travis books again 👍
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 February 2014Brilliant, brilliant book! I love a good serial killer story and boy did this satisfy. A hunt for 'The Iceman' who is killing children has the FBI and local police joining forces to try and find him. A nice fast pace and I liked all the characters, nobody annoyed me...for a change. A few heart-pounding moments and I have to say I definitely wasn't expecting the ending that we got...very nicely done. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, hope I don't have to wait too long.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 November 2016Got this for free as a Kindle deal. It's a decent enough novel with a couple of good twists - one I half-saw coming, the other definitely not! There are a few times where the reader has to suspend disbelief a bit more than usual in an action-packed story, but that's true for a lot of other enjoyable reads.
It's hard to empathise with Thorne as he is a very unpleasant and arrogant character. You would think a profiler would understand psychology and apply it to take the easier route of getting colleagues onside rather than the complete opposite. Easier to care about Kane, but you get more of her back-story. Having said that, Thorne would need a hell of a back-story to explain his obnoxious characteristics!
The issues I had (apart from a few typos which any decent proof-reader should have picked up but are seemingly all too common these days) were the amount of swearing - which made the detectives sound like Derek and Clive or teenagers trying to sound tough - and the author's bizarre use of capitalisation to stress words, where the rest of the world gets by with italics. The former would be much more effective if there was less of it, the latter is just plain irritating! Would have been 4 stars without these niggles.
All in all though, a reasonable story if you like crime novels, as I do. If it hadn't been free and I'd had to pay a couple of quid for it, I would have been quite happy. I will probably read the next one in the series as I am interested to see how the characters develop (those left alive!)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 February 2020Good title. Well-written story. Two strong characters. Plenty of action, and a reasonable twist. What more do you need from a free download? It helps that it's good enough to make you want to buy the next adventure and that was the plan all along.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 November 2024What an amazing story. I read a lot but I don’t remember an ending as good as this one - can’t wait to see what happens in book two
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 November 2019Wow what a book. It's a quick read but what a read. All done and dusted in one sitting. Didn't want to put it down and thankfully I didn't need to. Thorne is aptly named, he's the thorn in most people's sides with his harshness and out there 'i don't give a f**** what you think' attitude. He's the profiler you love to hate but he gets the job done.
Written extremely well. Keeps the imagination running in course of all the action.

4.0 out of 5 stars entertaining, nice twist at the end
I would recommend this book to everyone who enjoys books/films in the line of Silence of the Lambs. Convincing characters, suspense and the occasional surprising twist make this book a good read. I hesistate to give this well written book five stars because to me it seems rather like a skillful blend of already created characters, motives and plot lines. Nevertheless it entertained me and made me read other books of Travis. So four stars for sure!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly interesting and thought provoking
I typically read all types of genres but must admit fantasy is my big love with police procedural such as Creatures of Appetite coming in a distant second and even further behind would be a novel in a series.
I was pleasantly surprised then to find that from word 1 I was hooked and actually read every word to the very end of this book and enjoyed it immensely. Both of the “heroes” are flawed and are easy to relate to as we all have a Kane or someone who fancies themselves a genius like Thorne in our lives. The Iceman is a cunning and thoroughly believable baddie and his crime is laid out logically throughout the novel.
I enjoyed this so much in fact that I just bought #2 and #3 in the series and hope that I will enjoy them as much as the first.
I highly recommend this novel and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Whoa! Prepare to be Surprised!
Picked up CREATURES OF APPETITE by Todd Travis during a recent book promo. It was a little darker than what I’d been reading lately—all about a serial killer that preys on young kids. It’s a genre bender. While listed as a mystery-thriller, it could just as easily been categorized under horror. Think Dean Koontz.
For me, the beginning chapters were a love/hate relationship. I thought some of the writing was good and other parts repetitive and difficult to follow. Quick transitions and redundant dialogue made the opening a slow go, but I did like the characters and where the story was headed. I figured if something works, I’d give it a pass and kept reading.
About four or five chapters in, Mr. Travis hits his stride. I loved the protagonist Jacob Thorne. He’s a prickly s.o.b. with a personality better suited for a job in the DMV, but there he is, a profiler with the illustrious FBI. Well, was a profiler. In fact, he’s brought out of an enforced retirement to try to stop a serial killer dubbed The Iceman. Unfortunately for him, he’s saddled with Special Agent Emma Kane, a former cop who’s recovering from a traumatic event. Does Thorne relish a partner with shaky hands? Who would, but most of us would be more tactful in expressing dissatisfaction. Let me put it this way, Thorne does not hold back.
Given that this is Todd Travis’ first book, I kept thinking that I can’t wait to watch him develop. I was impressed by the writing and wished the very few mistakes were cleaned up. I mean, why not? This is stellar work and deserves stellar handling. The plot was intriguing, the characters richly embraced, and the twists? They had my head spinning. I especially loved the one at the end. No spoilers here! Suffice to say that Kane finally learns why Thorne plays chess in that unique way. She keeps hammering him with that question throughout and the answer had me laughing out loud.
If you can handle grisly crimes, a scumbag killer, a profiler who clearly never read Norman Vincent Peale’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, a rookie agent that better get her act together fast, and assorted police officials who would rather be right than catch a killer, then this one’s for you. I highly recommend CREATURES OF APPETITE and enjoyed the walk on the evil side. It’s creepy, full of memorable scenes and action, and entertaining to boot. Mr. Travis, I’m keeping my eye on you! Can’t wait to read what you come up with next!

5.0 out of 5 stars All you could want .. and more!
In many ways this is a hard-boiled tale of police detection, with twist and turns of plot, rapid action, and brilliant deduction. The psychopath is kept anonymous until very close to the end. His crimes are horrendous. This book has just about everything you could want from a thriller/horror tale.
Jacob Thorne, the chief profiler, is a brilliant, but curmudgeonly b*stard, to put it mildly. (Excuse my language.) Emma Kane, Thorne's offsider, is a woman of caring and courage, but with hidden flaws. This is Kane's first case and the reader is soon on her side, hoping the best for her.
The plot has absolutely no dull spots, moving along rapidly. The short chapters help to keep up the pace. I read the book quickly mainly because I couldn't put it down.
This is one of the best books I have read in a while and I am happy to award it 5 stars.
