Head in the Clouds Much? Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 106 ratings

All the ingredients of classic chick lit, told from the perspective of the Gay Best Friend.

There’s a fine line between being quirky and being downright weird, and Lou had unknowingly crossed it years ago...

Twenty-nine-year-old Lou Lawrence has been coasting through life. He resides at the family home in the small town of Crockham for £40 a week and changes jobs whenever the going gets tough. But the one thing that doesn’t come easily to Lou is his relationships with men.

Lou believes that all his problems will disappear when he meets the right guy. What isn’t helping is the fact that Lou has a habit of chasing after straight men. That hazardous trend is set to continue when Lou, swayed by events at younger brother Roy’s wedding, takes on the role of delivering the Christmas mail. Lou falls for his beefy-legged colleague Dean... then befriends his fiancée.

With Dean's wedding fast approaching, should Lou listen to his ‘feminine brain’ and carry on chasing after Dean in the hope that he'll stray to the dark side? Or should he follow the advice of his straight-talking ‘masculine brain’ and look for love elsewhere?

About the Author

I was born at an early age to parents who named me Andrew. After fleeing Essex, we settled in Hampshire, England. Ever since I was a boy of seventeen, I’ve been taking note of things that I find funny or intriguing. There was no reason why I started doing this; I just did it. I’m a bit weird like that. Leaving my notepads in a cupboard seemed a bit of a waste. So, after having a pre-midlife crisis in my late twenties, I decided to put my jottings to good use. Four years after I started writing my first novel - Head in the Clouds Much? - I released it into the world as an eBook. A year later I did the same with my second novel - Back Down to Earth. Both novels have now made it into paperback. My dream has been achieved.

I really enjoyed reading this book! I did however not like the main character, but that seemed to spur me on to read more. A real testament to the author to create a character that isn’t that likeable but a story to keep you engaged and wanting to see the outcome!

I should start off by saying I am not the biggest fan of books written with a male voice - that said this book doesn't take itself too seriously. The main character really does have his head in the clouds - fantasy scenarios and jumping to conclusions are regularly knocking him of course!! But he bounces back & keeps going, learning and loving and making new friends along the way. He is 'camp as christmas' and I dont think the post sorting office has encountered anyone like him before, but he has a fun journey.

Really enjoyed this book, gay chick lit at its best. Lou as a postman is really funny and his complicated relationships due to him always going for the generally unattainable straight men, lead him into all sorts of trouble. He certainly isn't a paragon of virtue, he has a bit of a nasty side, but he always stays on the right side of the tracks to make him a likeable enough character who you hope would find happiness. Would definitely read more from this author, reminds me a bit of Nick Alexander which is a big compliment.

I loved this book. From the first line to the last I was completely hooked. It is well written, engaging and intriguing. The plot whips along, the dialogue is real and truly funny with plenty of laugh out loud moments. Lou's relationships feel true to life with convincing, well drawn characters. Lou himself is sharp, witty, sometimes flawed but always totally loveable and believable. I enjoyed this book so much I read it in two days, I couldn't put the kindle down and would definitely recommend it. If you are looking for a change from the predictable 'boy meets girl', you won't be disappointed. A great debut from a writer I'm sure we will hear more of, I'm looking forward to the next one already!

I enjoyed this book for the angst and the complications of wanting to be in love. And the age old problem of falling for the wrong person. This is funny yet sensitive. Follow the day to day frustrations of Lou the gay postman in his bid to find himself a partner. Very enjoyable.

I chose this as it was recommended by a friend. I wish I'd tried to read more of it, but I'm afraid it wasn't for me.

This is a novel that is based upon obsession and how far you might be prepared to go in order to change that obsession into reality.

Louis Lawrence is the main character, who has had a very unsuccessful love life and finds himself becoming more of a permanent fixture on the shelf. As he hurtles towards turning 30, having no boyfriend to boast of - despite those around him getting married or finding love - enter into the equation Dean...closely followed by Oliver, who then become the objects of Louis' ever increasing obsession. In order to find out how Louis' obsessions affect his various relationships - or indeed, if he manages to find love with one of these two men - you would need to buy the book and find out for yourself.

The characters of Louis, Dean and Oliver were incredibly believable and I am sure that we all know of someone who falls into at least one category of these main characters.

I'm not sure if the author intended the reader to continually change their allegiance toward or against Louis but at points throughout the novel, I found myself doing exactly that. To me, this just made the relationship I built up with the lead character all the more genuine, as life isn't always a wonderful bed of roses. Similarly, with Dean and Oliver, I found myself at times siding with them, when the outcome for Louis wasn't always positive.

I applaud the author on an excellent debut novel, mixing the gay romance and chic-lit genres with a little sprinkling of the darker side of obsession in order to draw the reader in and leaving them wanting more by the end of the novel.

I am very happy that there is a follow-up novel and I am hoping that Louis, Dean and Oliver will all be reunited once more to see how their relationships may have developed, changed...or...maybe, something even darker!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarity

Andy Sexton's debut novel Head in the Clouds Much? is a nonstop stream of well-crafted insults, humiliating pranks, and hurtful sarcastic remarks. One character tells another who's been seeing a psychologist: " That must be a tough job, trying to find something in your head."

I loved reading this book--although I feel I should warn potential readers they might do as I did and spend more time laughing than reading.

Lou is a 29-year-old gay man, still living at home with his parents in a small town in southern England working for what Americans call the "postal service." And despite his desperate attempts to land a boyfriend, not one has yet made even a shadowy appearance in his life.

Lou's fatal flaw: he falls in love with straight men, although "fit" gay men who act like straight "blokes" can tempt him as well. Unfortunately, none of the men in either of those camps appears to have much interest in Lou--except to bask in his attention and manipulate him for their own purposes.

Fortunately, on the other hand, that doesn't stop our feisty Lou with his self-admitted "stalker-like tendencies." Another ingenious scheme always arises from the ashes of the last one to go down in flames.

I should also note that Lou is the epitome of an unreliable narrator, and that only adds to the fun. Consider this: "I was struggling to get served due to the barmaid taking an instant dislike to me. She could clearly see that I thought I was too good for the place." The last nine words of those remarks are the only ones the reader can be sure are true. One suspects the busy barmaid simply hadn't noticed him, and that was what made him feel he was "too good for the place."

One word seems to stick to Lou. When his sister-in-law Christina chides him on his total lack of success in finding a boyfriend, he says: "I'm waiting until the right man comes along. What's wrong with that?" Christina sees her chance: "There's waiting and there's being delusional." That's the word: "delusional."

Even Lou admits he was at his happiest when his "head was in the clouds." And so was I.

I highly recommend Head in the Clouds Much? to any reader in search of hilarity.

I read a couple of reviews of people saying that they didn't like the main character. I really enjoyed the book, and grew to really like Lou - he is flawed (but admittedly so) but it's hard not to like him. A fun read.

While this book was written pretty well all the characters in it are disagreeable. Lou, the mc was an annoying desperate loser that it was almost impossible to root for. The story focused in him trying to get this crush to turn his way. Because it was well written it gets more than three stars but I didn't really enjoy it as I didn't like any of the characters, so didn't find it moving, touching or funny. Still others may enjoy Lou and the writing was tight so four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well crafted debut novel.

I very much enjoyed this book. It was very well written and the author captured well the pathos of a thirty year old gay man, still living at home, without ever having had a romantic attachment and with a string of unsatisfying jobs. I struggled in my twenties, myself, trying to figure out what to do with myself both personnally and professionally and I could relate well to many of the main character's struggles. By the end of the book I found myself really pleased with his progress and the fact that there will be a sequel out soon so that I can continue to look in on his personal growth.

The author has a blog and it is very well put together. This is the author's first novel and through his blog he gives good insight into his creative process. I found it very interesting.

I found this book on Amazon putting in the search "gay romance" into the search engine. It is not a romance complete with sex fest so if you are looking for that, best look elsewhere. Do not hold the author accountable for your disappointment if you were looking for romance and instead found a coming of age type novel, complete with angst, character flaws and less than beautiful and perfect male characters. However, if you enjoy a well crafted piece of gay literature, then you have come to the right place.
