On a cold December morning in New York City, a man is found dead in Central Park. There are no knife or gunshot wounds to his body and no signs of violence. But beside the body is a box containing a cracked vial. Suspecting he died from some sort of biological attack, a lab team screen the body. What they find is deeply unsettling and terrifying.

Seven months after he left the ARU, Sam Archer is now a 3rd Grade Detective in the NYPD's Counter Terrorism Bureau. However, not everything has gone as expected. Most of his new squad have welcomed him. Others haven't. But when he and the rest of his team are called in urgently and told of the situation all personal differences need to be put aside.

It's been confirmed the man in Central Park was killed by an unknown strain of a toxic pneumonic virus. Once inhaled, there is no chance of survival. The victim dies quickly, violently and in agonising pain. There is no antidote. No one knows where it has come from, who planted it in the Park and why. No ransom demands or threats have been received. Archer and his team are ordered to find out who was responsible, and to locate and secure any other strains of the virus that may exist. However, they are already almost out of time. Someone is intending to release more of the virus into the city within the next ninety minutes.

As they desperately search for answers, Archer and the rest of his team quickly discover that the cracked vial in the Park was just the start. They are also not alone in wanting to get their hands on the virus. There are others, people with far more sinister motives who are desperate to acquire the virus and who will kill anyone who gets in their way. As people around him start going down, Archer must battle to stay one step ahead in the race to find the toxic weapon before it is used again.

When he and his team finally realise the full horrifying extent of what they’re dealing with and the potentially devastating effects of its release, Archer must do everything he possibly can to stay alive and secure the lethal virus before many more people die.

However, he is already too late.

I really enjoyed this book although this being the first one I read in the Series of Sam Archer I didn't feel that I had missed out by not reading 1-3. A great story line with several twists and turns and is gripping to read. Lovely finish and great surprise. Nice to read about the main character who doesn't "fall in love" and then she typically dies which is how these stories often go.
I certainly recommend Tom Barber and will look out for more of his books.

The fourth in the Sam Archer series and already waiting for the next, a great read whether you've read the previous books or not. A week to Christmas and snow covered New York and a deadly virus stolen from a laboratory means Sam Archers new posting with an NYPD anti terrorism unit is going to be full of fast paced action, and it certainly is, incredibly well written, once again Silent Night gets my five star vote.
    Highly Recommended.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good read, plotwise and character wise. However by Book 4 I had hoped the author had got over his habit of static description where it isn't necessary. Example Archer asks taxi driver to drop him off apparently nowhere near a real destination. Then follows description of getting out of taxi, slamming door ( mentioned a lot in this book), Archer then goes to building, stops and looks around, cue description etc, static description of entry etc etc and by then I'm slowly losing the will to live. And yet the start itself is action packed and shocking! By the fourth book the author should be past what is a common error of beginners- or maybe he needs an editor pointing it out. I always read to the end but some wouldn't and that's a shame because the plot is good and the characters work well together.

What I like about this series is that there isn't just one hero who miraculously
kills all the baddies while his colleagues are portrayed as incompetent dummies.
Here several of the characters get to save the lives of others and catch the enemy.

A deadly virus that can kill in 30 seconds has been stolen from a research lab by a gang.
At first I was a bit confused as another gang seemed to want to get their hands on the virus too,
but it was all explained later in the book. After seeing the awful results of the use of the virus,
Sam Archer and the rest of the team race against time to try and find where the other bombs
containing the virus have been hidden. Can they find them before thousands are killed in a
    terrible way?

The book was quite complicated and there was a twist towards the end. Also some of the team
are in serious personal danger. The body count was high, but there was no excessive language and
no romance/sex. The story rattled along at a headlong pace, even if it was a tad far-fetched in places.

This is the 4th book in the series I have read and enjoyed and I would read more by this author.

If you like Lee Child - you'll like Tom Barber.
The main character, Sam Archer is a younger, much more innocent Jack Reacher type of guy. He hasn't got the background of Reacher but Tom has written him in a way that you know you would like him to be on your side in real life.
I loved the ambience Tom built up of New York. I could easily picture the locations within the city and despite the temperatures hitting 20 degrees here at the moment, enjoyed and felt the wintery, Christmassy setting of the story.
The story had good twists and unexpected turns - I didn't expect the outcome of Jorgenson........quite moving.

This is a very gripping suspenseful book. I found the characters were well depicted and the places were written about so well it put me in the scenes. The plot was amazing being perpetrated by hate and money hidden under racism. It is all done brilliantly, with no bad language, very thrilling.

What a fantastic ride you take with Archer and his team in the NYPD Counter Terrorism Bureau! A man is found dead in Central Park at the start of the Christmas season, no noted injuries save for blood. As officers look they see a shoebox with a cracked vial inside beside the man. Brought to the lab, the deadly results show a toxic form of virus which once inhaled kills quickly, with no antidote!
Looking for answers the team discovers that there is more of the virus out there and desperate people want to use it for harm. The story has many amazing scenes as we go to the lab the virus was stolen from, where evil men have murdered any who were there or had shown up. Bodies are dragged and stacked in a room...
The team members have many of their own problems to deal with along with this mission, the team leader just back from a serious heart-ache, losing a family member. This is fascinating story that flows along quickly, so much is happening that you cannot stop reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars SPECIALTY COPS, NEO NAZIS' AND A STOLEN LETHAL VIRUS. BEYOND A HORROR STORY. SO WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?
Reviewed in Canada on 12 August 2018
This is the kind of book that can be intoxicating. A genuine police thriller with mayhem to no end. A lethal experimental virus is stolen to be blackmarketed to "whoever" can pony up the money, and to prove its virility, it's tested twice with deadly results. A stand alone story with seemingly unlimited twists as the bad guys parley their inexperience into situation after situation with no end in sight. Sheer brilliance on behalf of our intrepid good guys, though, as they stumble from dead ends to new leads to more leads and then more thanks to pure logic and experience - and with no small thanks to a lady with a computor following events on cctv. An ultra modern take on neo-nazis' and an absolutely outstanding cop shop. Too real to be science fiction, this is one super well done yarn that'll shut you up for hours. DON'T PASS ON THIS ONE. It's one gut twisting believable yarn.
