Exodus (Extinction Point Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 5,437 ratings

Reporter Emily Baxter survived the alien red rain that blanketed and annihilated the human race. But after the downpour, and the lethal contagion it spread, came an even greater horror: the rampant transformation of the dead into something utterly unearthly.

With a terrifying new form of life emerging from the mutated landscape, Emily’s only hope is to flee toward distant Alaska where she can unite with the survivors who have reached out to her from a remote science facility. The journey from New York will be long and painstaking, and Emily has only her faithful dog and whatever she can carry. But, after discovering a small family of refugees along the way, Emily’s determination to escape the unfolding catastrophe and carve out a new future is renewed. Standing in their way are Earth’s new masters, equally determined to survive and thrive, and possessed of monstrous capabilities Emily and her allies can’t begin to imagine…until they’re face to face with the hideous reality.

In the battle about to begin, there will be no room for mistakes or mercy—only the most ruthless instincts to survive.

Loved the book, ready for the next instalment. Much prefer the audio version. Would highly recommend the series, to anyone.

This book continues the human race's fight for survival in the guise of Emily trying to reach the mysterious Jacob. At the start of the book we know there are more survivors as we are introduced to the crew off the international space station. What you get from the ISS point of view is a top down commentary of the alien weather which has destroyed life on earth. What effect the crew can have remains a mystery but I have a feeling that more is to come from the ISS crew.

For a book with half a dozen characters, the story is really well written. I always thought that building a story with so few characters must be extremely difficult but this remains a good solid story. The heroine of the story, Emily, is as sympathetic a character as you could wish to root for. She is plucky, strong, resilient and determined to survive against the odds.

In summary, a brilliantly detailed and plotted story. Roll on book 3

Extinction Point was easily one of the best recent books published, which had the rare ability to be genuinely creepy. Exodus builds on this as well as throwing in a whole lot of new action and lots of little mysteries for us to ponder.

The way the relentless red storms sweep the planet is unnerving to say the least, especially when you are aware of the effect on all indigenous life, not just us, and the way the central characters deal with it is very down to earth - no expert scientists or weapons experts - as so commonly seem to be the ones who survive such catastrophies, just a young woman whose knowledge of boats and sailing goes no further than the re-run of Titanic she watched!

Without giving too much away Exodus can be upsetting, but in reality with what is going on around the planet earth of the story this should not come as too much of a surprise.

There is a third and possibly fourth book coming next year, which I really look forward to. So far the first two have been a work of genius, I really hope this continues.

The concept behind this book (and its predecessor) is quite good. Basically, the world's gone to shit and the protagonist has to get from A to B whilst contending with various monsters. I'm fairly happy with that set-up. It's my kind of story.

However, the characterisation and pacing really inhibited my enjoyment of the story. Everything happens very slowly to some rather uninteresting and superficial characters. At no point do they approximate real people. At no point do you really care what happens to them. They simply exist to move the story along. The main character - Emily, I think - is tough, independent, a little bit sassy, but isn't afraid to get in touch with her emotions. And that's it. She's a collection of characteristics in search of a believable personality.

With regard to the pacing, the two books could easily have been edited down to a single volume. I appreciate books that are priced around the £4 mark because with the Kindle you're getting less product for your money, but when you're paying for two books at that price and when the two books are really just one, big, bloated book, then the economies begin to look a bit illusory.

Don't get me wrong, I'd happily recommend the book, but just be aware of what you're buying. It's (very) easy reading and will occupy a couple of afternoons for four quid of your money. Nothing more than that really.

Good read and a nice plot, a real page turner. A little amateurishly written in parts, too much detail about trivia, `as in` when faced with an alien monster the heroin drops her bike and thinks "I hope the bike is OK but I`ll just have to trust that it is, then turns to face the monster" NOT a very likely thought to have in the circumstances she faced! A lot of things that should be left to the readers imagination are not, trivia rides supreme! Most annoying because the writer is in fact quite good at descriptions? However despite the annoying bit`s it`s still a good story and to prove it I have bought book two.

I was worried about reading Extinction Point Exodus – the first book was so good and I wasn’t sure which direction the second book would take. Was I in for a big disappointment?
Well, in the middle of reading this book I had a new experience – the battery in my Kindle died and it switched itself off mid-sentence. Why? Because I was so engrossed in the action I had missed all the warning messages telling me that the charge was low.
    This book is so good.
Emily continues on her quest to find other survivors and yes, it is a story about a journey but it is so much more. Surprisingly Paul Antony Jones managed to introduce more characters – and whilst some only had small parts to play he was able to make me care about them.
The story moves at breakneck speed – faster than the first book – but I still couldn’t read it quickly enough. I just had to know what was going to happen.

My only disappointment with this book was the end – it came too soon for me and I can’t wait for part 3. Come on Mr Jones!

P.S. I will never watch Ice Road Truckers with my son again without thinking of Emily and Rhiannon!

Don't get me wrong...the book is well-written and a great sequel to the first book. However, it was lacking any real 'punch' Other than the encounter with the family and the creature there wasn't much action to the book, and the plot suffered for it. Mostly because what could have easily of been told in a few pages was stretched out over dozens. Even if this were tightened and condensed into a novella, I'd still enjoy it. Just felt like good couple of chunks of the book were written as filler.

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple but very good post apocalyptic story
Reviewed in the United States on 8 September 2013
An excellent post apocalyptic novel, i bought the kindle version but i will definitely buy the book also. A simple but very good story told in an excellent way in my opinion. It is about the attempts of the main character to reach an island near the coast of Alaska from the outskirts of New York, traveling through a land desolated by a pandemic of alien origins. Detailed but not borring descriptions of the places, events, emotions, fear, panic, sorrow. This makes the story sound real and the reader feels to be a part of it. The first half is definitely 5 stars, and 4 stars for the second part that describes a journey to an ice cold and deserted Alaska.
The first part reminded me of Siglers "Infected" in the way the author tells the suffering and struggles of the main character. The story is less violent than the one told in "Infection" but i thing the emotional pain of the characters is comparable and probably in "Exodus" things are a little worse regarding that.
The second part is definitely less tense than the first one but its also an interesting read, though the main character looks more tired than in the first part.
The story ends in a kind of strange way. It is a part of a series so there will be more to come, but the second volume, "Exodus", is a very good read on its own (i didnt read the first novel, but i had no difficulties reading this one). Overall i think this is a 4.5 stars novel for funs of the genre but sinse in my opinion it is a good book i think any reader will probably like it.

This awesome, fast-paced story kicks along at a breathtaking pace. Our central character develops more depth and detail in subtle but endearing ways and the story itself is just as compelling as the first book. Next book please....
