'Buried Tears' is based on a true story of two brothers, a family and a fateful day in 1941 in the village of Golden Hill, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire in the UK. The story unfolds across the backdrop of the stark realities of working-class life during war years.

Vivien brings members of her family back to life in a captivating, emotional and heartfelt novel which overflows with vivid descriptions, unforgettable anecdotes and larger-than-life characters.

Towards the end of what starts as a normal day, Kenneth is reported missing. The truth surrounding the day's events is concealed and life, with Fear and Guilt as companions, is never the same. Over sixty years later, the truth and the tears crawl out of their hiding place into the light.

This is a true story that will prove difficult to put down. It is one which will find a special and lasting place in your heart.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I grew up in a small terraced house in the village of Goldenhill, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England with my three brothers and two sisters. I married in 1971 and have been blessed with a daughter, son-in-law and grandson.

Having left school at 15 with no qualifications to my name, I eventually graduated as a mature student from Manchester Metropolitan University with a 2:1 BA (Hons) degree in Professional Studies in Education. After qualifying I worked for many happy years as a Lecturer at Stoke-on-Trent College.

Some may say that I have always had a flair for writing, although author and novelist never entered my equation. An unexpected change in circumstances afforded me the time to reflect and, more importantly, to write my Father's life story.

'Buried Tears' like many true stories, was kept waiting too long to be told. Once the cork was out of the bottle, it almost wrote itself and became my main focus of attention for many months. After publication to local acclaim, I assumed my writing days were over, but in its telling I opened a door which I cannot close. There are simply too many stories still waiting in line to be given a voice.

I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my family and especially to my Father, who shared his story with me, so that, in turn, may share it with you.

The description of the hardship of life in the 1940s and the thoughts of the characters are excellently portrayed. The book describes a lifestyle that probably no longer exists - the warmth of family life and the pride of the characters in managing when they have relatively little materially. The suspense is kept up until the end and keeps the reader's interest throughout. The tale is well structured and is a heart rending account of one family's attempts to cope with a tragedy at a time when counselling was not an option.

This is a true story of family life in an old pit/foundry area of the Potteries. The characters are brought to life and you are involved and moved by the poverty but resilience of the working class people of the day. At the end of the book I was crying but uplifted - a real good read.

Buried TearsThis book was purchased for my wife as she is an avid reader of paper back books, reading one every two weeks !!! We were aware the author had just published their 1st book and my wife was dying to read it. As the book is centred on family and events around the "Potteries", where we live, it was going to be interesting seeing how the book's story unfolds.
My wife confirms its one of the best books she has ever read. Clearly a lot of thought and insight has gone into it to capture my wife's attention. We now await her next book !!!

I loved this story. I lived about two miles from where this was set and am of an age of the 'eldest wench' so the picture Viv paints of the people, their mores and the area brought back vivid pictures I had hidden away. It is a very moving account of the understanding a child has for their parent as they approach the end of their life. I found it very moving having lost my father the same year and who was of similar ilk to Wilf 'a rough diamond of the Potteries' but of strong moral character. It was also a deep insight into how grief and blame can colour and influence a person's life. Thank you Viv for sharing this with us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tears Never Shed

Fictional, but some truth, about a 12 yr.old boy in Ireland who believes his entire life, that he is responsible for the accidental death of his 9 yr.old brother who drowned in a canal while playing with friends.

He believed that he was responsible in not giving him the six-pence,he wanted in order to go to the swimming pool, never minding that he couldn't swim, there either.

He held himself accountable until his dying day when he finally gave himself the privilege of crying real tears,as his brother was waiting to lead him home.

Not my usual genre, but as I came from a large, poor family, during the same time period, only in America,it tugged at my heart.
Gave way to much info away, but still a great story worth reading,to see what I didn't tell.

Buried Tears is the fictionalized heart-rending story of a nine year old boy's disappearence from a small Staffordshire, England mining town in 1941. It is a window into the hard-working but desperately poor town of Golden Hill. Jones word paints her novel with images that are unforgettable, at once heart-warming and heart-breaking. Her characters leap from the page with all their glory and foibles in place. I read this book in two days. I literally could not put it down. I highly recommend this book to mystery and historical fiction fans. You will not be disappointed!

A story of heartbreak and unhappiness caused by the death of a sibling. One could feel the author's pain, but the story would have benefitted more with some judicious editing as the tragedy became laboured when it was repeated over and over again. Nevertheless still worth a read.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring!!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 11 February 2014
Thought this book was going to be more or a mystery type! Turned out to be a very long read due to the fact the writer bounce style of writting. Didn't like the word whore for female children, not sure if that's how the Irish would use that word to talk about their girl children. Took to long to get to the point of the story which was a okay ending, just okay!!!
