Cold Fear (Tom Reed Series Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 17,801 ratings

When a ten-year-old girl disappears in a Montana forest, it sets off an investigation that uncovers a dark secret.

In a remote, rugged corner of Montana’s Glacier National Park, little Paige Baker of San Francisco disappears with her dog, Kobee, while on a camping trip with her family.

At least, this is the story her mother and father have told the authorities.

As a multi-agency task force launches a massive search, Paige fights to survive in the wilderness. Time hammers against her and soon the nation is gripped by the life-and-death drama.

Behind the scenes, the FBI grows suspicious of Paige’s parents. Soon homicide detective Walt Sydowski is assigned to assist in the case, and reporter Tom Reed is dispatched to cover it.

But when the parents’ recent history and disturbing evidence links them to a horrible secret from the past, Reed realizes it will take a miracle to find the girl.

Because there may be a monster in their midst, racing to catch her first…

This story was well-written, nicely paced and had several related strands that impinged directly on the plot. The characters were three dimensional and their emotions in this most distressing 'lost child' scenario painted with a masterly hand.

As a writer myself I appreciated the twists and turns of the story, none of which were telegraphed. If I have a criticism I think the writer gave one police officer character more than enough sympathy at the end, when he should have been fired for... but I'll not spoil it for you; if you like US police procedurals with flesh and bones (not literally) and plenty of tension, then this is a good read that will have you turning pages. I will read more of Mr Mofina.

I had never read anything by Rick Mofina before although his name was familiar, I now know that I was missing out.
Upset by her parents rowing, 10 year old Paige wanders off into the woods near their campsite with her little dog. When her parents realise that she is missing they call the local police who, suspicious of inconsistencies in their story, call in the FBI. A search is soon underway but Paige is nowhere to be found and as time passes the authorities become more and more sure that her parents are hiding something. Have they hurt their own child or is something else going on beneath the surface?
This is a really well written thriller with lots of twists throughout. The action is viewed through the eyes of several different characters including 2 FBI agents, a journalist, the parents and Paige herself. This acts in a similar way to a split screen in a film or tv show, at any one time you know what each character is doing and how they are being affected by what is happening. The author alternates between each of these characters, chapter at a time which really racks up the tension. This ensures that the reader doesn't want to put the book down as each time you come to end of a chapter you know it will be quite a few pages before you come back to that person again. There are several twists in the plot which leaves the reader constantly reassessing the entire scenario and right until the last page you don't know how it will turn out.
I really enjoyed this book and have discovered that there are others featuring some of the same characters. I look forward to reading these.

This the first Rick Mofina book I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, despite a few typing errors. For a thriller, it was interesting that the reader knew the truth about the three Baker family members and Isiah Hood before the FBI, other investigators, searchers and the press. This actually made for a more intense read as the story built towards its climatic conclusion, with lots of twists and adrenalin fuelled moments along the way. OK, as with all works of fiction, you do need to take some things with a pinch of salt, such as the worldwide media interest in one missing 10 year old in the American backwoods, but it all added to the drama and the thrill of the ride along the rollercoaster search for her and unravelling of the truth behind her disappearance and the mystery of her mother's background and current family situation. All very enjoyable and a book I consumed in practically one sitting.

Great read, so many characters. Main characters were the Bakers. Likeable family with a dark past looming over them. What did they have to hide? Kept you on your toes in terms of Paige's life hanging in the balance. A born survivor. The book highlights how misinformation can be interpreted as fact. It leads you to believe an injustice has taken place. As an avid reader of crime, thrillers and horror the story line was straightforward. However, the way it was written kept me glued to the book. With so many characters with interesting and individual backgrounds it was good to acknowledge all organisations involved in an investigation into a missing child especially if a crime was suspected. Read it in three days (work in between).

10 year old Paige Baker is on a camping trip with her parents when she goes missing. Will she be found in the remote Glacier National Park? Will a cold fear grip Paige or her parents? How will the multi-agency response handle her disappearance? Will the reader feel a cold fear or is this book like drinking cold tea?

Rick starts his novel by casting doubts on the parents. He develops a mystery surrounding their back story. He brings in lots of characters who are on the trail of finding Paige. He follows the news media as they report the disappearance and the search. He slowly reveals what happens to Paige after she has gone missing.

Rick’s writing style is that of a newspaper reporter in that his novel is bite-sized and snappy. I found this book shallow and under-developed. The mystery elements are okay and make you wonder how this story will pan out. But the search for Paige and the plot of this novel are mundane. It is all rather run of the mill and nothing was outstanding or radically different. Rick does try to develop a mystery of the dark secrets held within the Glacier National Park to give the reader a chill factor but fails as this is not cold fear but like drinking cold tea.

Cold Fear is an okay read with nothing special. It is very much like following an everyday newspaper story of a missing child. My reading pleasure was very limited and I took nothing away from this book. The ending was very far fetched and unrealistic. Rick did not develop social issues and did not have an attitude or message. There was no real darkness to this novel and overall it was very light. The plot, mystery, dialogue, character development and entertainment were all light.

Cold Fear is a disappointment for one simple reason. Rick tried to instill a fear that within the Glacier National Park there lurks an evil. To tell a tale that gives you the creeps and makes your mind wander when walking your dog, takes great skill but can be done. Cold Fear for me was like cold tea, an okay read that I will vote the middle score of 3 stars. If you want a 5 star novel that employs the hidden darkness and evil held within a landscape, then I can recommend Black Wood by S.J.I. Holiday. She can teach Rick a thing or two about writing a good novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars nail biting suspense

While on a camping trip with her parents in Montana's Glacier National Park, little Paige vanishes together with her dog Kobee. A multi-agency task force start an intensive search for one little girl lost in the grizzly infested area, with each passing day reducing the chance of finding her alive. At the same time, the searchers grow more and more suspicious of her parents, Doug and Emily, and secretly start a second parallel investigation into their lives and past.
Not as fast paced as I would have liked, but still with enough tension and suspension and plot twists, especially in the last third of this book, to keep me glued to the pages, not only hoping for Paige's rescue but also to find out what lies behind Doug's and Emily's behaviour and reactions. Oh boy, are they in trouble!
What the book did show me as well was how easily it is to condemn someone, or how easily someone can get entangled all of a sudden with the law, caused by, and based on past experiences of the Law enforcers, on suspicion, on evidence that can be interpreted in various ways.
As a reader, you know the truth of what happened in the current storyline, but even then you start doubting when confronted with evidence and behaviour, actions and reactions. And the second storyline, from the past, is only revealed in bits and pieces and again, can be interpreted in several ways. So at some stage, even as the reader knowing more through the narration, you might get as confused as the law enforcing officers and the searchers.
The fast paced finale, with all the threads coming together, had me nearly bite my nails, and reading late into the night because I could not stop.
A very good book, in my opinion, with a more than interesting plot, good storytelling and a lot of interesting characters with burdens of their past influencing their view of the present situation, and what looked to me a good and thorough knowledge of how the different law agencies work.
I definitely would read more of this author.

What does a 20 year old murder case involving a young girl in the Rockies have to do with a young girl whose Parents report her missing in the same place? Why are her Parents evading questions about a loud argument they were seen having? Where is their daughter and why is her Mother Emily acting so strangely? Why does her Father have a cut on his hand and where is his axe? FBI Agent Zander is still reeling from a mistake he made in a case that haunts him. Is he seeing what he wants to see or are these Parents as innocent as they claim?

I really enjoyed this book and held my breath a few times when the book took some unexpected turns. If you love intrigue in your novels you will love this, highly recommend.
