Be Mine (Tom Reed Series Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 5,203 ratings

A message in blood near her boyfriend’s dead body.
The killer means business…and she’s next on his list.

During his years as a crime reporter in San Francisco, Tom Reed had seen a lot of sick messages, but the one just delivered to his fellow reporter Molly Wilson is different—it's shockingly personal, written in human blood at the murder scene of her boyfriend, San Francisco Homicide Inspector Cliff Hooper.

The horrific death of a revered cop shocks the San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Detail. Shaken to the core, his grieving fellow detectives go flat out to find his killer under the glare of the city's news media. SFPD Homicide Inspector Walt Sydowski takes the lead, determined to find justice for his fellow detective’s death at any cost.

As Sydowski tackles his most challenging case yet, Tom races to save his career…and Molly.

BE MINE is the final installment in the Tom Reed series, a study in psychological suspense that takes the reader on an unrelenting nail-biting journey into the darkest regions of a tormented human heart.

I am what I would call a discerning reader, I have my favourite authors who I stick with ( C. Cussler, J. Patterson, J. Kellerman) to name a few. But ever now and again I like to try something different and when its offered up free as a teaser all the better especially as I am a pensioner. I have to date read four stories by this author three of them being the Tom Reed / Walt Sydowski series. Rick Mofina is an ex journalist so knows a bit about writing and catching he publics attention. These are basically murder mystery stories with a journalistic bent the two main characters are a journalist and a police detective who interact and feed of each other. Not going into too much detail about the stories or throwing any spoilers out there only to say that I found them well written and crafted as you would expect from an ex crime journalist. Thoroughly enjoyed reading them and looking forward possibly to trying one of his other books, if you like a good mystery/thriller give one a go.

Molly isn't ready to settle down so her relationships don't tend to last all that long. Usually she starts up another relationship before ending the other. On the night she was going to end her relationship with and sfpd cop he is murdered. Secrets and lies start to emerge. He was going to ask her to marry him but he found out she was cheating with his partner! He is now in the frame for the murder until he himself is murdered. An old flame shows up begging for another chance......yep you guessed it he's murdered too.

I liked this book but it didn't keep my attention as well as I thought it would. I didn't like the main character Molly all that much but the rest of the book was good. Good twist at the end as I thought I had guessed the killer but my guess got murdered too.

The story revolves around a female news reporter. One of her jealous ex boyfriends decides to kill all other potential men standing in his way.

This is the first time ever that I have successfully guessed the killer, and I did so fairly early on. I find this rather disappointing; if the author can't even fool me (and I am really rubbish at whodunits), then I have to question his writing ability.

The author also appears to have shares in Tums, or if he doesn't, he should. They are mentioned so much I had to Google what they are. The mere mention of Tums grated on me to the point of me hoping there was some kind of relevance. Disappointedly not.

The main character also appears to be a bit of a tart. There are seven ex boyfriends she has had a relationship of a few months plus with, then there are men she's gone on casual dates with. Plus she's really committed to her job; very professional at work... How has she had the time to date so many people?? Is this many boyfriends the norm in America and I think it's unrealistic because I'm English? Or does Mofina not really have a clue about how many men women tend to date prior to getting married?!

I thought the links back in to Bleeder's past were very smooth and a lot of the writing was also seamless. I felt like Molly was the main character but we were not given her perspective enough to really engage with her; it was almost as if Tom was fighting to be the main character, and with Mofina being an ex-reporter, I wonder whether he was dreaming an alter ego for himself through Reed.

In a nutshell it was okay. I wouldn't recommend or buy a Mofina book, and in a library I could definitely find better, but if leant one I would definitely have a read.

This is a decent thriller that didn't hold too many surprises but was still as solid and entertaining read. I liked the characters and although the story was over the top the writing made it seem plausible. A good bit of escapism for those who like guessing "who done it". I had not read this author before but I certainly would again and have downloaded another of his to read soon,

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enthralling suspense mystery
Reviewed in Australia on 3 June 2018
A detective is found murdered and all evidence points to his girlfriend or his former partner. When the partner is found murdered the only connection is the girl who had been involved with both of the men. Unbeknown to anyone the killer was in love with the girl also and was eliminating anybody who stood between them to clear the path for himself. Unbelievably suspenseful and edge of the seat drama. A must read.

    1) Why I chose this book : Third book I've read from this author and have thoroughly enjoyed each and every one
    2) Any course language present : No instances of the f-word and only a few sh-words which I usually take to be a good sign since author is focusing more on the plot which is a good thing
    3) Type of book : Tense, lurid whodunit/police procedural complete with a superb plot involving the deaths of police detectives, fully developed characters and twists & turns right up to the dynamic conclusion
    4) Formatting/Editing : Well-written novel with few errors I noticed
    5) Best/Worst aspect of book : Plenty of complex, flawed characters, great dialogue and a twist I never saw coming
    6) Favorite passage : Too many great lines including, "This was a murder among friends" , "He feared Bleeder. Bleeder controlled him." and "Scrawled in Hooper's blood, the killer had written one word in ten-inch letters: Why?" just to get you started thru the first 20% of the book
    7) Bottom-line : Easily worth the time spent and more than looking forward to reading "A Perfect Grave" next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mofina at his best. A thrilling page turner to keep you up all night.

A masterful cop thriller by one of the masters of fiction, Rick Mofina. If you haven't read his novels before, you will after this. Starts and ends with murder in the most attention grabbing way plus gives you hint after hint while daring you to solve the case. All his novels I've ever read, and there's been a few, are brilliant - laced with descriptive text, and absolutely enthralling. And this is one of his best efforts- period. I dare you to get this stand alone novel, read it cover to cover, and then not look for more Mofina books. Here, put yourself in the beautiful Molly Wilson's shoes, our femme fatale, and try to survive without becoming psychotic. The ending alone is an unbelievable classic that'll leave you downright shaky. My highest and most sincere recommend - wish there was a higher star rating available. . .

4.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery
Reviewed in Canada on 16 October 2015
Rick Mofina has written a complex mystery featuring a female reporter, Molly Wilson. a male reporter, Tom Read, and two police detectives, Walt Sydowsky, and Linda Turgeon, all based in San Francisco. No one stands out as the main character in the story, except for maybe Molly who is linked to the murders of two police detectives with whom she has had affairs. A psychotic element is inherent in the story ranging from about 18 years previously to the present. The writer has a style which does not induce attachment to any of the characters. The story is more like a chronicle of events. Although the surprising climax introduces pulsating suspense.
