Home Front: A heart-wrenching exploration of love and war from the author of The Four Winds and The Women Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 56,383 ratings

'One of the greatest storytellers of our time' - Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

From the multi-million copy number one bestselling author of The Women, The Nightingale and The Four Winds, Home Front is a provocative and timely portrait of hope, honour, loss, forgiveness and the elusive nature of love.

An intimate look at the inner landscape of a disintegrating marriage and a dramatic exploration of the price of war.

'It’s not intentions that matter. It’s actions. My drill instructor used to say that all the time. We are what we do and say, not what we intend to'

From a distance, Michael and Jolen Zarkades seem to have it all: a solid dependable marriage, exciting careers and children they adore. But after twelve blissful years together, the couple has lost their way. They are unhappy and edging towards divorce.

Then an unexpected deployment tears their already fragile family apart, sending one of them deep into harm's way and leaving the other at home, caring for the children and waiting for news. When the worst happens, each must face their darkest fear and fight for the future of their family.

Praise for Kristin Hannah:

Review

By reversing traditional expectations, Hannah calls attention to the modern female soldier and offers a compassionate, poignant look at the impact of war on family ― Publishers Weekly

An unusual premise, with mum going to war as an army reserve whilst dad has to stay home and keep things together. Interesting characters and the very real depiction of ‘life must go on’ as tragedy strikes and everyone comes to terms with what’s going on. Brilliant dialogue makes this a compulsive read ―
Books Monthly

A wrenching depiction of war’s aftermath ―

THE BOOKS INTRODUCTION.
5 out of 5 stars
THE BOOKS INTRODUCTION.
"The 1980s saw a radical shake-up in public housing provision, as Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government set about dismantling council housing, as it had been known since the war, on two fronts. First, government investment in couincil housing was cut dramatically, from £7.2 billion in 1979/79 to £1.6 billion in 1989/90 (1991/92 prices). In 1988, councils lost their role as the main providers of new social housing to the comparatively tiny housing association sector (housing just three per cent of Britains's population), becoming so-called 'enablers' instead. By 1992/93, councils were building just 1,200 new homes. The second flank of the assault came with the introduction of the right to buy for council tenants - an incredibly successful policy at the heart of the Thatcher administration's ideal of a 'property-owning democracy'. More than 1.5 million council homes have been sold to individual tenants since the policy was introduced in 1980. The fact that the right to buy was a powerful vote-winner at first seemed lost on Labour, with its strong local authority power base and electoral support on council estates. Initially, Labour was committed to repealing the legislation- but that stand has now been abandoned completely. Its commitment to use the proceeds from right to buy sales to invest again in new homes remains firm, if a little vague on detail. The Liberal Democrats are also committed to releasing and redistributing the capital receipts from sales into new social housing. Despite the assault of the past 15 years, council housing still makes up 21 per cent of the nation's housing stock, and it remains a political battleground. In 1992, the Conservative focus switched to housing 'management'. The government is now pushing ahead with manifesto plans to force councils to compete with the private sector (including housing associations) for the right to manage council homes. Labour is in principle opposed to compulsory competitive tendering (CCT), preferring to leave the decisions on contracting out to individual local authorities. The Liberal Democrats are equivical about their position on CCT, but would ensure tenants had a vote on who managed their homes. Council housing - the biggest block of homes under political control - has inevitably been at the heart of the parties' battle for votes and power for many years. But their is growing evidence to suggest hostilities are no longer so fierce. Labour has gradually accepted many of the Tory polocies for the sector, while the Conservatives have apparently accepted the sector remaining intact - seeking to tame the beast rather than shoot it." 'DESPITE the assault of the past 15 years, council housing still makes up 21 per cent of the nation's housing stock.'

This was an ok holiday read but a bit too sugary and fluffy for my liking. Not a patch on Nightingale, Four Winds or The Great Alone.

For me, the kids were the most annoying brats ! At 12 years old Betsy needed some discipline. Her sulky moods were pandered to and she needed to take responsibility. She never lifted a finger to help with chores and just moaned all the time. Lulu the youngest was also out of control. Both parents and the grandmother indulged them too much, and why can’t a 12 year old return from school to an empty house ? Plenty do and it teaches them responsibility.

When Jolene returned from Iraq with her injury, their father was worse than useless in not preparing them for how vulnerable she would be and how careful they had to be not to bang into her and hurt her.

The start of her depression and moods was inevitable but they way in which after just a few therapy sessions she was all of a sudden “fixed” was unrealistic and unbelievable. It seemed the story was rushed at the end for a sugar coated happy ending .

This wasn’t anywhere near the brilliance of her other novels and didn’t even seem like the same author.

Hope she isn’t going to churn out more of this type of fluff, instead of delivering truly great novels akin to Nightingale, Four Winds and my absolute favourite The Great Alone.

I liked everything about this book ..the author’s deep understanding of human character and the challenges women face when they try to live their dreams and choose careers dominated by men.
All Kristin’s books have inspired me so much and helped understand how privileged we are right now and relate with the tragedies many people faced in the past in wars etc and many continue to face in the recent wars in Russia ,Ukraine,Israel,Palestine..seems that the modern world has not really been as progressive and humane as we would have wished it to be

I am really into Kristen Hannah's writing and I am chalking up her books that I have read and adding more to my reading list. Great writing, truly. Characters that are real. But the crux of her stories is the truths that weave through the pages. Hannah puts war on a closer footing for those of us who have never been near a battlefield and treats the characters realistically. There's a lot of heart in her books but nothing twee or kitsch. Cannot recommend this book highly enough. The only reason I gave it 5 stars is because there was no facility to give it 10. You are doing yourself a favour reading it.
