- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2013This is an enthralling and vivid account of the devastating effects a tragic death can inflict upon a family. It is a moving novel full of mystery, emotional turmoil and suspense founded on a web of deceit and insecurity. The premeditated suicide of Flora is poignantly described in the prologue. She leaves a note with just 'Forgive Me' written on it. Flora has three children, Eva, almost 21, Ben 18, and Sophie 17. Her husband, Andrew, is a successful businessman, controlling, undemonstrative and lacking humour but reliable. Eva has the shocking experience of finding her mother in a bloodied bath.
The aftermath is a dramatic change in the family atmosphere. Sophie, has bouts of hysteria, Ben becomes sad and bewildered whilst Eva attempts to be strong and comforting. Andrew turns to drink, launching a vitriolic and scornful verbal attack on the stunned Eva accusing her of contrivance with her mother over the contents of her will in which Eva is left a studio in London. Eva reflects on the indifference her father had shown her in the past and also how so different her mother was from him. She realises how little she really knew of her loving mother's thoughts and ambitions nor about her past life. What went wrong and why did she kill herself? Eva is determined to find the answers little knowing that a can of worms would be opened and more puzzles thrown up than solved.
At Flora's funeral, Eva discovers from Flora's college friends that her mother was a successful and gifted artist. She was also tremendous fun, a party girl prone to mad cap ideas interspersed with episodes of hermit-like solemness. The information takes Eva to the London studio where she meets Bill, an honest rock of a man. Following discoveries hidden inside, Eva follows the clues and encrypted sketch diaries of her mother taking her to Scotland and then Carlisle where Eva becomes more enlightened about the unanswered questions that will hopefully satisfy her peace of mind and also her family's. Her travels involve encounters with engaging, sympathetic and helpful individuals, not without humour nor creating more emotional turbulence.
This is a beautifully and sensitively crafted novel by Lesley Pearse. Its winding narrative explores a spectrum of grief, depression, heart-breaking discoveries and surprises. The character development and complexities of the interpersonal relationships between the protagonists are masterfully drawn in a realistic and concise form. Eva is easily warmed to as are other trustworthy friends. Their strengths, weaknesses and secrets within are gradually unfolded and tied up again to provide explanations and provoke further thoughts. An extremely well-written and enjoyable book.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 January 2025This book is very enjoyable and has some shocking parts.
On the whole you could see where it was going but as the reader you want it to go that way to.
Only dropped a star because at times the speach between the characters was a little how you used to write it at school.
Very good though and I shall read others from this author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 May 2021I’m only half way through this book, yet felt compelled to write my review!
This book is a lovely read and I could really empathise with Eva, the main character. Her ups and downs were tremendous and yet she handled them with grace and dignity. Eva trusted everyone she met, yet some didn’t deserve her trust. I so want her to be a success at whatever she chooses to do, career-wise (up to this point, she’s undecided in which direction she’s going to take), as I’m that invested in her. We can all relate to some of Eva’s mishaps and enjoy in her elation when things go right. I’m very happy reading this book, which is a different book to my usual crime/gangster books. I will be investing in some more Lesley Pearse books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 March 2024Yet again another brilliant book I didn’t want it to end Fabulous story Now to go get the next one
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2014This book was easy to read ,the beginning moved fast ,it then slowed down a little and was a bit predictable in places . Had a different but interesting story line and some surprises too. Not the authors best book but realistically and quite vividly written ,I enjoyed getting lost in its story . I only gave it 3 stars because parts of the story was predicable.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 February 2013I have just finished reading this title by Lesley Pearse and cannot praise this lady highly enough. She has a natural ability to draw the reader into the story and hold their interest right until the last word.
"Forgive Me" was no exception. I read it in two days and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. It had so many twists and turns but was so gripping that you just had to read on and on. I hated having to retire to bed because I just wanted to go on reading.
I had come across this author several years ago with another of her titles and again enjoyed it so much that I bought and read each one of her books until I could find no more. I eagerly await each of her titles as they are published.
Well worth buying this book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 March 2013I love Lesley Pearse books and had this on order for it's release date. I will not go into the story as it is covered by many other reviews. For me this was not the best Lesley Pearse I have read. I really enjoyed the characters and the story until the end. I was disapointed some of the characters were not tied into the ending and did not feel the book was 'rounded off'. I would still recomend this book to others and look forward to Lesley's next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Pearse at her best
"Forgive Me" is an emotional and gripping story full of suspense, drama and mystery which is destined to be another best-seller for Lesley Pearse. It is one of her best stories I have read for some time. You will remember Eva Patterson, the strong and gutsy prime character for a long time.
A few days before her 21st birthday Eva returns home to find that her mother Flora has committed suicide leaving a simple note "Forgive me". From that time on Eva will find that everything she believed about herself and her comfortable and secure family life with her loving mother and father is based on a web of lies.
In her mother's will Eva is left an artist's studio in a trendy area of London which Eva didn't know anything about. Her father's cold reaction to Flora's death and her will and his almost immediate rejection of Eva will alter her life forever.
Eva discovers that her mother had been a successful artist before her marriage. Eva finds diaries, paintings and a box of baby clothes and sketches in the attic of the studio that tell her something about her mother's past which prompt her to track down the full story.
This is a fast-paced, page-turning and emotional read as Eva searches for answers about her mother's past and meets people who knew her before she married. The characters from all parts of the spectrum are superbly crafted especially Phil who helps her to renovate her studio and find out the truth about her life.
Lesley Pearse builds her plots like a fast game of snakes and ladders. A fortune teller warns Eva to avoid disturbing the Serpent as it will only bring her pain. In facing the Serpent Lesley Pierce skilfully steers Eva through traumas, violence, and lies which change Eva forever and affect her chance of happiness.
If you are a Lesley Pearse fan you will love another dose of her emotional, easy-reading magic books filled with unforgettable characters. If not, please try this book and I am sure that you will join the ranks of Pearse's many fans. It is easy to see why Lesley Pearse has been a number 1 best-seller in the UK and Australia for many years. So many of the top UK authors are also very popular in the US and it astounds me that her books, published by multi-national Penguin, are not released in the US on Kindle and Amazon is only selling print versions in that market via third party booksellers. Maybe someone can tell me why this is so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgive me
'Forgive me' is about a young girl who is forced by her stepfather to leave their home after her mother commits suicide. Then she discovers that her mother has kept secrets from her about her childhood which will turn her life upside down. 'Forgive me' is one of the better novels by Lesley Pearse. Despite some parts being very slow due to the abundance of detailed descriptions, it was very original and emotionally powerful. No clichés, no stereotypes. From the start I was hooked by the story. I highly recommend this novel and rate it with 4.5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesley Pearse is one of my FAVORITE authors and I own each of her books
Lesley Pearse is one of my FAVORITE authors and I own each of her books. Her writing is superb and each story touches my heart, so call me biased, but I absolutely enjoy each and every one her books! I also only buy her books on Amazon as she is a British author and not widely carried in bookstores. In addition, the price at Amazon is very fair and their shipping date is dead-on, that I always buy books oks) through Amazon!
