When Celaine is a child her family are killed in a terrorist explosion in a shopping mall. Ten years later, she still hasn't come to terms with her loss. Therefore when Celaine is given the opportunity to avenge their death, she doesn't hesitate even though she knows her life will never be the same again.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable read. I was hooked from the first chapter, wanting to know how Celaine was going to cope with her new life, away from her friends and the wonderful man in her life. The characters are real and the plot mesmerising. Not to be missed.

'Enigma Black' is the story of Celaine, a young woman who must leave behind her friends and the man who loves her to avenge the loss of her family at the hands of a mass-murdering villain.

This book tells a classic superhero tale, with major sacrifices being made by Celaine on her way to becoming a hero capable and strong enough to fight the man who killed her parents. I was quickly absorbed in the story and found the main characters easy to like. There were some good twists and turns throughout which kept the plot from becoming predictable and kept me turning pages. I read this in a few quick hours and it kept me entertained throughout.

I thought the tone was a bit uncertain in places - it would seem like a serious moment but then Celaine would wink or something. This was the only thing that really bothered me and it's a minor complaint for a story that captivated me from beginning to end.

Overall this is an entertaining, page-turning, superhero story. The ending both shocked and satisfied - I look forward to finding out what happens next!

Absolutely brilliant. Exciting, thrilling, emotional read. I'm disappointed I have to wait to find out what happens! A real page turner, read this book, you will not be disappointed!!

I am not one for long reviews as I feel a novel is a very personal experience, so I'll get to the point!

I loved this book. The lead protagonist Celaine was an endearing character, who I felt I took the books journey with. I very much enjoyed the confrontation with the Man in Black, but felt perhaps another encounter with him would have added to the novel, hence four not five stars.

I would however recommend this novel to all readers alike, and cannot wait for the follow-up!

An unlikely heroine. A mass murderer who's frustrated the President so effectively he greenlights a decision that would (if publicly known in our world) create national panic, not to mention having a moniker so ominous it becomes a parallel for his taste of art. Wise-cracking, techie virgins and the perfect balance of human tragedy and triumph. That's Enigma Black for you, and Sara Burr whips up a story where diverse characters and situations can thrive. Enigma accomplishes an appeal to many tastes without losing any of its authenticity, which isn't exactly a cakewalk. In between the drama, flying fists, explosions, and scientific experiments there lies comedic relief in the dialogue, especially whenever the protagonist's best friend Lucy opens her mouth, and a budding love triangle worthy of any watercooler gossip.
One enjoyable, pre-Christmas shopping trip among a family at The Lakes Mall turns into a plotted terrorist attack that, just about, takes the life of every member. Teenager Celaine Stevens miraculously survives but is left with more baggage than an airport facility (thank you, I'm here all week!). Celaine is sent to live with her aunt on the East Coast, and years later is adopted by her boyfriend's family and finally able to be at peace. That doesn't last long, as one night following work Celaine is stalked and offered an unfathomable request by a man claiming to belong to a militant rogue organization. What the man asks of her is to help take down the infamous Man in Black, the terrorist responsible for her family's demise. This request, though unorthodox and quite ridiculous, triggers a primal need of retribution in Celaine, and she plunges into the unknown. And let me tell you, we should thank her for it.
Enigma Black equally entertains and satisfies the need for an intelligent read. Burr asks us what we would do if forced in the protagonist's position, one of unresolved, constant emotional pain. Where most people have already embraced some form of coping and wouldn't dare take on an evil elusive enough to go untraced for over a decade, Celaine remains in the minor. She's crazy, folks

5.0 out of 5 stars Action, political conspiracies, and romance. An excellent read!

I'm not a big fan of superhero stories, but I really enjoyed Enigma Black. As I read it I found myself very engrossed in the story in a way that I felt a connection with the characters and cared about the fate of each of the them. The author did a great job of character building and moving the story along.

Even if you're not into superhero stories, like me, if you enjoy action, romance, sci-fi, conspiracies, humor, or all of the above, you'll more than likely enjoy Enigma Black. I loved the relationship between Celaine and Blake (the two main characters), and Cameron is definitely one of my favorites; he's such a smart ass. I think the narrative is where the author shines the most. The shift between first (Celaine Stevens) and third person perspectives was done very well. Dialogue sometimes feels a bit too formal, but overall it was great! There were some really good lines in Enigma Black, particularly between Celaine, Black and Cameron.

The story does end in a cliffhanger, but not in such a way that it feels unfinished. It is clearly a series and ended in just the right fashion to leave me wanting more. I'm really looking forward to Book 2 because there are certain things revealed in the final chapters that I can't wait to see unfold. You'll just have to grab a copy for yourself to find out exactly what I'm talking about.

I've never read a book that was flawless, and there are a few minor formatting issues in this e-book (mainly with some indents here an there) and a few minor typos, but they were very minor and very limited. This book was very easy to read and enjoyable at that. Enigma Black was an excellent story!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good start.

Sarah Furlong-Burr has a great imagination and the plot of this book is well-handled. I enjoyed Celaine’s story and all the main characters are well-rounded. I’m assuming the author wanted her readers to know who her enemies are early so that they are always waiting for Celaine to find out. It isn’t only the one Celaine is after. I know, I was.

I liked the idea of engineered super humans, a heartless bomber and mad scientists. The story had me intrigued from the beginning. I think with some beta readers willing to give the author thorough feedback re those grammatical problems and a small bit of name continuity towards the end, then a light proofread, Enigma Black (I love that title) could easily be a no 1 best seller. Having said that, I will continue reading the series. As I said, I love the main character and I want to see how it all ends.

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthy read

This is a book that makes you wonder what you'd give up for revenge. Celaine chose to give up everything for payback for those who killed her family. She goes on an interesting journey whereby she gains some superhuman skills. It is a story that is a slow burn that keeps you guessing where it's heading. The plot had some interesting twists and didn't generally go where I had predicted. Celaine becomes this kick-ass woman that gave up so much just so she could keep a ten year old promise but sadly it seemed that she had to give up so much more. It definitely will keep you reading and looking forward to book 2. It's a book worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars engulfing...engaging...very good book!

I love reading but it normally takes me a month to finish a book because of my crazy life. However, in Sara Furlong Burr's book, Enigma Black...I finished it in four days. I could not stop reading it. I downloaded it on my phone, my laptop, and even my computer at work. It became an addiction, and I couldn't stop reading. Sara has an amazing talent to pick you up, and totally place you in another world. When reading these pages, I felt as if I were there, I could see what the characters seen, hear what they heard, felt what the felt. The whole world around me disappeared. Sara was an expert at not only making you feel like you were there, but you felt all the emotions that the characters felt. I found myself weeping during the sad parts, laughing out loud at the main characters sense of humor and sarcasm, and my heart raced during the fight scenes. When Celaine's heart broke, so did mine.

Sara did an amazing job with her first book. It was very well written. This book was captivating, stimulating, and reached in and grabbed your soul and emotions. I can't wait until the next one comes out!
