Deep Fried and Pickled (The Rachael O'Brien Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 2,316 ratings

Book one of THE RACHAEL O’BRIEN CHRONICLES introduces Rachael O'Brien, whose plan to study Art History turns into a laugh-out-loud romp of misadventure. It’s 1986, the era of Pop Rocks, Jelly shoes, and big hair rock bands when she enrolls in a southern college intending to earn a degree, party, and meet cute guys—hopefully acing the latter two. She has barely had time to acquaint herself to the dorm food before finding herself threatened by a jealous She-Devil, fending off the advances of a thirty-something redneck, and stumbling upon an art fraud scheme. To top things off, her parents go their separate ways: her mom to follow a psychic calling; her dad adrift in his midlife crisis.Bad decision-making, law-bending behavior, and surprise romances make freshman year memorable in Paisley Ray’s DEEP FRIED AND PICKLED.

About the Author

Paisley Ray grew up in Pittsburgh when the three rivers town was a steel city. She has fond memories of Kennywood Park's Thunderbolt wooden roller coaster, and remembers the invention of the terrible towel. Although she has relocated numerous times, she still craves an Isaly's chipped ham sandwich. Summer breaks were spent with relatives on the Carolina shores, and it didn't take long for her love of the south to become rooted in her veins and yield the setting for her novels. To date there are 10 novels in this humorous romantic misadventure mystery series. The Rachael O'Brien Chronicles are not your typical fiction. A young woman's plan for an art history degree turns into an outrageous series of misadventures in this laugh-out-loud romp about a girl who enrolls in a southern college during the height of the crazy era that was the 1980's. This collection crosses genres of chick lit, mystery, romance, humor, and action with the possibility of a corpse or two. I absolutely loved reading this book. I initially bought it thinking it was going to be a lighthearted school rom com... it was so much more. Lots of plot twists kept me grpped throughout. The book is well written with great characterisation and lots of humour. Being from the UK I loved reading about a different parts of the world and the little details like the bathtub dew drink and food descriptions from the New Orleans trip really brought the culture to life. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series. I would highly recommend this book.

Not being a teenager anymore, I found the tales of student friendship a bit hard going at first, but they liven up this story. Behind the facade of student life lies an interesting discovery of fine art fraud. The characters are likeable (or dislikeable depending on who they are) and I actually enjoyed the story. I'm not sure if the descriptions of the deep south language, food etc are accurate, not being American, but still, a good read, light hearted, very funny in places.

I know I'm too old to remember anything about Universities, especially American ones, but that really didn't matter as I don't think anything has changed much. The style of writing was brilliant, whoever edited it (if it even needed editing) knew their job, the characters were all likable (not sure about Bridget and the Rays), loved the southern-ness. I hated finishing it, will probably read it again when I become too demented to remember I have already read it. Get past the first few pages and it's wonderful. Highly recommended.

When I started reading this book I thought it wasn't for me. I had difficulty getting my head around the teen language. However about 30% through the book started to pick up and a good story line evolves,.
Stick with the book it makes a good read with many twists and turns and a complicated layering of characters, not all likeable.

I got this book when it was listed as a free book. I am glad I got it. What a lovely read. I have now bought and read all the sequel books so far! I love how Rachel seems to be the only sensible one out of her roommates but she gets herself in so much trouble! If you read this I am sure you will be the same as me and buy the rest! I can't wait for the next one!

An Enjoyable read if you can overcome your frustration with the heroines inability to put two and two together without her calculator. Her room mate is unlikable as is she generally. I am glad I didn't pay for the book however as I am not sure it was worth anything. The author can probably do better but I would start from scratch with a more rounded and likable cast.

For only the 2nd time in my life I couldn't finish a book..; and it turns out it's deep fried and pickled. I tried hard to concentrate both on the heroins whishes and acts, but after the 3rd chapter I started flipping through pages and finally closed the book for sure. I don't even know if I can recommend it to average-smsart teens. or is it some kind of diary from a nut-headed teen alltogether? there is simply nothing : bad writing, bad ideas, no true plot, no analysis of the difficult passage from teenage to adulthood, simply nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilariously Nostalgic Series! Mystery, Clean Romance and Crazy Adventure Set in the '80's
Reviewed in the United States on 27 March 2017
I am absolutely in LOVE with this series! I am on book 7 of the Rachael O’Brian Chronicles now, and can't stop, but I wanted to head back and do some reviews starting at book #1. This series is set starting in 1986 when the heroine goes to college-- I started in 1985. No cell phones, no computers essentially, it is really a fun series to read. Rachael O’Brien is a funny girl with an eidetic memory, that comes in handy, but isn’t overused in the series. She makes friends pretty easily, and is a good friend who happens to run into some precarious situations. With a family interest in fine art and restorations, Rachael is pursuing a degree in Art History in NC. Her adventures take place here, at home in Ohio, and sometimes on Spring Break with her friends.

Paisley Ray has a beautifully visually style of writing. I can see every action and setting, as if I were watching a movie. Her characters are well written and easy to visualize. So far, each one has maintained their uniqueness although they do grow from Book 1 (Freshman Year) to Book 7 (Senior Year). They are hilarious and get into plenty of messes of their own.

I am uncertain of the negative reviews—especially those who never got past the 1st quarter of the book-- but yes, this IS about a College Girl. They do go out drinking, but it isn’t promoting drinking, just telling the story of college in the ‘80’s. The drinking age was 18, switching to 21. I thought there was so much more to the story that it being about “18 year-old antics”. Well, it was set in the character’s Freshman year of college, so I’m not sure what you expected??

The most amazing part to me is how well Ms. Ray kept to the right clothing, cars, language, etc. for the ‘80’s. It isn’t easy, but I’ve only seen one glaring error so far. Well done and so charmingly retro for those of us who lived it back then.
This series is a bit mystery, some nostalgia for some of us and a hint of romance but 100% clean reading in the romance department. If you are looking for an enjoyable series to relax with, Rachael O'Brien is the gal you want to be with.

I found this series via Bookbub, and read the subsequent titles using Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited, which unfortunately doesn’t count paying a monthly subscription to borrow their books as Verified Purchases yet.

Told from the perspective of Rachael, the story is about her getting away from her parents’ influence and “being an adult”.

All about growing up, parties, trying to lose her virginity, dorm friends, frenemies, fights, secrets and forgeries.

Captivating and full of mystery, it kept me at the edge of my seat to figure out what happens next.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read
Reviewed in Australia on 24 August 2016
Ebooks are often either poorly written and/or weak on plot as they don't have to go through a publisher & editor. This book is one of the exceptions however. It's entertaining & well written, a really enjoyable read. The characters are fun but also believable and the several sub plots kept it all bubbling along nicely. I'll definitely be reading more.

5.0 out of 5 stars As tangy, crazy and fun as a deep fried pickle!
Reviewed in Canada on 30 July 2015
Love this book! The characters are quirky and loveable, the plot keeps you on your toes, and the setting is interesting. It's part mystery, part love story, part coming of age story and 100% intriguing. I liked it so much I quickly bought all the rest of the series and inhaled them. Can't wait to see what happens next to Rachel and her crazy roommates, family, and friends! Only complaint is I always end up craving southern food when I read one of these! :)
