SECOND TO NONE: She's on the streets and taking no prisoners Kindle Edition
This book was brilliant, as are all the others written by Ken. Although a crime book the sense of humour shone through from start to finish. An excellent read. I hope Ken reads these because in his words as he’d better get into gear and write some more. I’ve finished all of his sagas and the crime books and can’t wait for another damn good read.
Born in Bosnia in 1970 of a Bosnian mother and English father, Martha Jana Jones is what our American friends might call a real kick-ass lady who will most certainly appeal just as much to women readers as to men―especially to readers not averse to a spot of female violence, because Martha can really dish it out when she wants― but only to men who really deserve it.
The Jones family come back to England in 1980 where her father dies in a road accident. Her mother remarries a brute of a man who sexually assaults Martha, who eventually retaliates by stabbing him. He survives but her version of events isn’t believed and she ends up in a reformatory and, when she’s old enough, she joins the British Army.
The army finds her to be a woman of unusual combat ability. In 1992, during the war in Bosnia, Martha is the only woman selected for front-line duty. She’s given intensive SAS training and impresses even them with her talent for martial arts and expertise with gun and knife. She prepares her mind for dangerous assignments with a method of self-hypnosis involving a mantra ―nulli secundus―second to none.
In one under-cover action she wins a top bravery award and is sent on an officer training course to Sandhurst Military Academy. Martha is a beautiful young woman and, on becoming an officer, she’s raped by three army sergeants jealous of her achievements. Once again her version of the event isn’t believed and she's kicked out of the army before she can bring disgrace to her regiment. The rape leaves her pregnant with a daughter, Daisy, and with a burning desire for revenge.
For many years her rapists think they’ve got away with it, but they’ve reckoned without the need for vengeance simmering inside Martha who believes in the old adage: Revenge is a dish best served cold. At first, in the guise of a street worker called Abilene, she takes her need for vengeance out on the men kerb-crawling the streets looking for prostitutes. Martha/Abilene can no more sell herself to a man than fly to the moon, but she sees no reason why she can’t relieve them of all their money―a girl has to make a living somehow.
Okay, this is where the action really takes off, but I’ve told you enough. To get to know Martha a little better I suggest you now click on Amazon’s brilliant and free LOOK INSIDE facility and check out the opening chapters. Hey! My girl might not be your cup-of tea, but I’m guessing she will be!

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't let this cover fool you
I always enjoy Ken McCoy's stories, even though after reading quite a few I know his plot form. However, this one had a twist on it that I enjoyed. The plot implies things that aren't really that important to the story.
