Can the young visitors persuade the Trojans to reject the Greeks’ gift of the Wooden Horse, or will it prove impossible to change the course of history?

My books have won various awards over the past couple of years, including gold and silver medals in the Children's Literary Classics Book Awards 2018 and 2019, and a bronze in the Readers' Favorite Book Awards 2019. I have also been shortlisted twice in the Rubery Book Awards.

The Shadow of Atlantis is the first in a series of time-travel adventures, featuring 3 children and a magnificent Tonkinese cat called Max. The most recent title in the series is The Shadow of the Great Fire, set in mid-17th century London, and I'm now working on book number 18 - The Shadow of the Slave Ship.

As I take my young readers on a magical mystery tour through the past, I'm hoping that my love of history, myth and legend will rub off on them too. Personally, I'm enjoying the journey so much, I don't ever want it to end! Why not come along with me for the ride?

I, along with Jemina, Joe, Charlie and Max the cat have been transported back in time to Ancient Greece and to witness the ongoing war that the Greeks raged against the Trojans. Once again Wendy Leighton-Porter has used an historical event to entertain and teach the younger, and not so young reader. The story flows well and we speculate whether the children and Max can alter the course of history and save the Trojans from total destruction. The Gods play their part too as they watch over the three children and come to their rescue on many occasions. But it is Max, that garrulous cat who is the real hero in this story and very nearly loses his life as the sword of Achilles hangs over him.
Still looking for their parents, Joe and Jemina are yet to be reunited with them but their search continues and I look forward to reading another of the Shadow series to find where they go next on their time travelling quests. One day they will find their parents and Max along with the children can happily stay in their twenty-first century world. Until then, there are a lot of adventures still to come!

Joe and Charlie, especially, soon realise how different real war is from playing a video game in this book! Thrown into the midst of the Trojan War against the Greeks, the boys along with Joe's twin sister Jemima and their cat, Max, try to do all they can to help Cassandra, daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba. After the first day of watching the fighting in Troy, the eagerness to take in all the gory details soon changes!

Cassandra has been punished by Apollo so no one believes her prophecies any more. Aphrodite is the one that has arranged for the children to be in Troy. Cassandra is hoping that the children will be able to persuade her parents. She is able to tell the children that she has seen their parents who are lost somewhere in the past. She assures the twins that they will meet up sometime, somewhere cold.

Max, a Tonkinese talking cat, really comes into his own in this book. Not only does he feel guilty over something that he does when trying to help but he has a pretty scary adventure of his own when he is disguised as Hermes with winged feet to try and persuade the Greeks that the upcoming solar eclipse is a sign from the gods.

If you and your children have knowledge of the Trojan War then you will see how the author has kept many of the "facts" close to the original. If you are new to the Trojan War then I suggest you do what Jemima does at the beginning of the book and read the story of Troy before embarking on this adventure.

Just so you know there are two instances in this book where the word "hell" is used - "mad as hell" and "What the hell..?" This book, due to its subject, does depict violence and death but the original story of Troy, as you may well know, is not a pretty one either.

I am a huge fan of Wendy Leighton-Porter's earlier books and the latest installment featuring the twins and the wonderful Max certainly lives up to the high standards I've come to expect. Great plotting and character development and wonderful characters whom you can really get behind. As always, Max plays an integral part in the adventure which makes the book a must for cat lovers. Can't wait for the next one!

Wendy has produced a cracker in this, the third of the 'Shadows from the Past' series. Forget the Oddyssey and the Iliad - this is much more fun. Wendy places her delightful charcaters in the horns of yet another historical dilemma; but how will they save the day? Well worth a read!

You think you know this story? Not this version. It's brilliant! So cleverly thought out and written. I love this part of history and its a fun book that will have you on the edge of your seat by the end.

Continuing the story of the Lancelot twins' quest to find their parents lost somewhere in the past, Wendy now takes the reader back to ancient Troy. In a masterly re-take of the tragic course of events that led to the fall of Troy, Wendy again demonstrates her detailed knowledge of the ancient world woven into a tale of action, mystery and friendship that should keep readers young and old turning the pages till they reach an alternative conclusion to a much loved legend.

Wendy Leighton-Porter's imaginative and epic adventure series is a firm favourite in our house, and this latest editions arrival was greatly anticipated.
It is a fantastic story, I like the way that all the historical facts are woven into the narrative and the children love the adventure quality of the book as well as the problem solving aspect, they always like to guess the anagram and work out the clue to the adventure.

The three books in the series complement each other beautifully and we hope that the children solve the mystery surrounding their parent's disappearance, but maybe not too soon; we're enjoying the adventure and are looking forward to the next book, The shadow of the Pyramid. We like all things Egyptian and can't wait to see how Max the cat gets on.

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Midst of Adventure & Tragedy
Reviewed in the United States on 2 March 2020
I wish the author had written this book when I was still teaching 11th graders the The Iliad and The Odyssey. What fun my students would have had with this after laboring through Homer's long poems! Wendy Leighton-Porter doesn't miss a thing with this retelling of the Trojan War--from the Golden Apple to the infamous Trojan Horse.

However, through the eyes of the three intrepid friends and Max, the cat, readers are drawn right into the battle, literally when the four land in the middle of the Greeks and Trojans fighting on the plains in front of Troy. Still hoping to find their parents, the twins with friend Charlie and Max, find themselves face-to-face with Cassandra, the future-telling daughter of King Priam of Troy. She hopes that the four can convince her father that the Greeks will send a wooden horse to bring down the city of Troy. When that fails, it is decided to send Max to the Greeks posing as Hermes to get them to abandon the battle and go home.

While not wanting to give away any more of the story, readers will cringe when Max goes out on his own to stop Hector from fighting and tragedy is the result. Woven into this retelling of the war, the twins find out from Cassandra about their parents.

This is a delightful story and the entire series will appeal to the young readers who have read or are reading Mary Pope Osborne's series The Magic Treehouse.
