Deadly Retribution (Tom Stone Mystery Murder Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 143 ratings

Detective Chief Inspector Tom Stone was very worried. Although he had just returned from a well-deserved holiday, after helping to solve one of the country's highest profile murder cases, he suspected that his recent feeling of both personal and professional contentment would soon be shattered. He was convinced that there was an informant amongst his colleagues, who had been systematically passing information to one of London's most notorious criminal gangs. The problem was that he had no hard evidence to back up his suspicions. Now that he had returned he was eager to find out whether or not his concerns were shared by his immediate boss - but the answer was not what he expected. It would set him on a course of action that would eventually lead to him being personally accused of attempted rape and then murder and require him to seek the assistance of a most unlikely source. And then there was his relationship with Mary. Would it survive everything that was about to be thrown at him? Whilst all of this was happening, Stone and Acting Detective Sergeant Milner were trying to solve a series of metal thefts that were plaguing their community. What had started out as straightforward criminal activity quickly developed into assault and murder. One thing was for sure. His would be no low-key return to work!

This is the second book featuring DCI Tom Stone. I really liked this book although some of the writing felt a little stilted and repetitive at times. The phrase 'he kissed her with real passion' being one example. I would recommend reading 'Playing at Murder' (DCI Stone no. 1) first as understanding the references to previous cases and story lines makes the reading experience even more enjoyable. I hope there will be a third book soon!

Tom Stone does seem very prone to getting himself into some tight scrapes - but in the process manages to do a fine job of entertaining his readers.

Am I missing something? I have just finished this book only because I felt I had to to be able to write an honest and complete review. From page 1 the writing is full of jargon and predictable one liners. Whilst the story line is adequate, the characters are wooden and caricature's of good v bad. I never once felt part of the story but it felt like watching a 70's TV police drama. I was unable to feel anything for the characters and was left feeling I couldn't wait to get back to other crime writers that leave me on the edge of my seat. Sorry but I won't be reading anymore in this series.
