I enjoyed this, the second in the series. It was a thoroughly good read and very well researched. Looking forward to the next book.

I don't go looking for spelling mistakes and I don't really mind them because they are more of a hindrance than anything else.
You have to go back to see if you have read the line properly to get past it. Other than the typos it is a good mystery.

Could not better this as a detective story. The religious/ moral / political ethics all combine to tell the tale with humour and sensitivity. The class and race prejudice is addressed with feeling, completing the novel.

This was my first by this author and at first I wasn't impressed, which was disappointing, given some of the previous reviews - I was looking forward to a good mystery, with others in the series to follow. Took a bit of perseverance before I could care what happened at the end, but a reasonable read once I got into it. Not sure I'll try any of the others, though, and I wouldn't particularly recommend it myself.

Enjoyable story with twists and turns. Having read several of these stories the characters are embedded and the plots a little amazing but it romps along and is a good holiday read.

If I hadn't paid (not much) money for this, I would have stopped spreading after the first 2 chapters. Very simple writing. Plot not bad.

A believable, down to earth detective story. Associations with Ancient Egypt and the occult. The detectives are likeable and well-drawn characters. Not full of suspense, but interesting enough to carry you along to the end. Have just bought The Graveyard Mystery on the strength of this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good British Police Mystery
Reviewed in the United States on 24 December 2013
Not a police procedural in the general sense used today for television and some of the books written , the hero is a police officer, who has problems with his Boss, but still acts with as much freedom as he can grasp. The "mummy mystery' goes way back in the genre, but the author makes good, if somewhat confusing, and certainly unrealistic, use of the device. If you are open to reading some well drawn characters and good scenes, amidst some confusing and fantastical action, you might well enjoy this one. I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars As usual they not only battle the bad guys but also their superior
Reviewed in the United States on 30 August 2014
I'm really enjoying this laidback British series. This is the second book and the story plot involves a museum in Rev. Insp. Hartley's village that houses a mummy! Hartley found comfort as a child hanging out in the museum among the treasures housed there. So naturally, when a mystery (murder) occurs, Hartley and his partner, Sgt. Kahn can't wait to jump into the thick of things. As usual they not only battle the bad guys but also their superior, Superintendent Donaldson. A good read with an entertaining plot!
