About the author

John Waddington-Feather 1933-2017 was a school master and Anglican priest. For forty years he was a prison visitor and Assistant Chaplain at Shrewsbury Prison. He was born and brought up in Yorkshire and studied at Leeds University. He had a scholarly interest in Yorkshire Dialect and the phrases in his books such as ‘ t’boys’ and ‘ t’olden days’ are intentional representations of the Yorkshire Dialect spoken by some of the characters in the book and should not be regarded as typos.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 May 2021I enjoyed this, the second in the series. It was a thoroughly good read and very well researched. Looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2013I don't go looking for spelling mistakes and I don't really mind them because they are more of a hindrance than anything else.
You have to go back to see if you have read the line properly to get past it. Other than the typos it is a good mystery.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2018Could not better this as a detective story. The religious/ moral / political ethics all combine to tell the tale with humour and sensitivity. The class and race prejudice is addressed with feeling, completing the novel.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 July 2013This was my first by this author and at first I wasn't impressed, which was disappointing, given some of the previous reviews - I was looking forward to a good mystery, with others in the series to follow. Took a bit of perseverance before I could care what happened at the end, but a reasonable read once I got into it. Not sure I'll try any of the others, though, and I wouldn't particularly recommend it myself.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 January 2016Enjoyable story with twists and turns. Having read several of these stories the characters are embedded and the plots a little amazing but it romps along and is a good holiday read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2014If I hadn't paid (not much) money for this, I would have stopped spreading after the first 2 chapters. Very simple writing. Plot not bad.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 March 2018A very good well thought out story, when greed and a mania for power destroys all sensible thought I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 May 2013A believable, down to earth detective story. Associations with Ancient Egypt and the occult. The detectives are likeable and well-drawn characters. Not full of suspense, but interesting enough to carry you along to the end. Have just bought The Graveyard Mystery on the strength of this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good British Police Mystery
Not a police procedural in the general sense used today for television and some of the books written , the hero is a police officer, who has problems with his Boss, but still acts with as much freedom as he can grasp. The "mummy mystery' goes way back in the genre, but the author makes good, if somewhat confusing, and certainly unrealistic, use of the device. If you are open to reading some well drawn characters and good scenes, amidst some confusing and fantastical action, you might well enjoy this one. I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good read
If the rest of the books are as good as this one I have hit the jackpot. It is an excellent read.

5.0 out of 5 stars As usual they not only battle the bad guys but also their superior
I'm really enjoying this laidback British series. This is the second book and the story plot involves a museum in Rev. Insp. Hartley's village that houses a mummy! Hartley found comfort as a child hanging out in the museum among the treasures housed there. So naturally, when a mystery (murder) occurs, Hartley and his partner, Sgt. Kahn can't wait to jump into the thick of things. As usual they not only battle the bad guys but also their superior, Superintendent Donaldson. A good read with an entertaining plot!
