- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 August 2011This is the first book I have read by this author, after coming across him through recommendations on Amazon, and I wonder what took me so long. The main character Wallace is a unusual character compared to most hero's, he is a bus driver with a limp! No Cry For Help drags you in from the first page, and keeps you riveted throughout. Why would a "average Joe", who has led a quiet life have his family taken from him? I tried to guess through much of the book, but it is full of twist and turns and keeps the suspense going right to the last chapter. The story moves fast and is hugely enjoyable. I was rooting for Wallace throughout, as his love for his family make him do things that are completely out of character, this is a man who will cross the line to have them found. The chapters are short but are full of suspense, and I flew through this book. I do not want to spoil the story for you by giving away to much of the plot, but if you love a good thriller I would highly recommend giving this book ago.... A well-written thriller and one of those books that is almost impossible to put down!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2020When Wallace Carvers family, wife and two sons fail to show for a meet up during the start of a family holiday he knows something is wrong but doesn't know why. Instinct? Seeking help, he isn't believed that he even crossed the border with his family. A check of the contents of his vehicle finds only his belongings and passport. Where is his family and what has Wallace done to them? Border patrolman a picture of Wallace crossing the border on his own. Wallace is in denial and tries to convince the authorities that he came with his family but the evidence proves otherwise. Wallace is then kicked out and back to his own country where police is all over his residence. Blood but no bodies. The only material things in the house belong to Wallace, he is now a wanted man and an arrest warrant is out with his name attached.
Wallace seeks help from an old friend and work colleague to get him back into the country to find out who, what, why and where. His family has been taken and he doesn't know why but he will stop at nothing to find them and the answers he seeks.
The book started off a little slow but after a few chapters it really ramped up the suspense and action. Page Turner for sure and a very good writing style.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2018An enjoyable and pretty decent fast-paced action thriller. It starts intriguingly enough when a man waits at a shopping mall for his wife and two sons. But they never appear.
From there the tension mounts as the puzzle around the family’s disappearance deepens as the mystery grows and our protagonist finds himself drawn in deeper and deeper. About halfway to three-quarters of the way through it does start to flag a bit, but the story remains very readable right through to the end.
Although, it has to be said there were one or two aspects of the story that did put a slight strain on its credibility, but the story held together enough to make you want to read to the end. But – to me anyway – it wasn’t one of those compelling unputdownable stories.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 January 2020This is a new author to me and I noticed before I started this one that I also have another by him downloaded, so his synopsis' clearly appeal to me. I found it was what I'd call quite a "blokey" book, better suited for men. It features ex-military sorts and a lot of guns and weapons and suchlike, all the things they usually like. I didn't mind it but all that sort of stuff bores me.
I liked the characters he created. The friendship between Wallace and Crow was especially nice.
I found the expression "He was alone and he had spoken true" a strange one ! He wrote nobel and not noble then full not fill. He also used we and not we'd......he was writing there more as people speak (we better hurry then)....then he lost an apostrophe with weapons cache and wrote dishevel not dishevelment. However, that was it for errors of any description which is pretty good going. A couple of passages had me quite sniffy and there were some amusing little asides as well. I'll definitely read the other one by him I have downloaded. There's nothing "wrong" with this one, it's just not really the type of book I like that much. Oh, it had a big old shock in it as well that I highlighted with a 'yikes' !!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2011I've just finished "No Cry For Help" by Grant McKenzie. I had to reach for the laptop immediately in order to write a review. The hour is late as I had to stay up in order to finish the book, and I absolutely had to get to the end as I couldn't wait to find out how the story finished. I was very glad that I did. It was a brilliant ending to an equally fantastic thriller. Having read Grant McKenzie's first novel "Switch", I knew he was capable of crafting a gripping thrill ride experience. I thought that "Switch" would be a tough act to follow but Grant more than met the challenge, demonstrating what a naturally gifted storyteller he is. Excellent plot, great characters and fast-paced action combine to make this a wonderful adrenaline fueled read.
Well done Grant McKenzie!
Highly recommend to all thriller fans to get this book and read it. Also, take a look at his debut novel, "Switch"
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 April 2013After buying and then trashing several so called 'thrillers' as they were slow and boring, I was pleased when I started reading 'No Cry For Help'.
The tale is of an ordinary guy forced into extraordinary circumstances, finding that he has hidden reserves of grit determination as he searches for his abducted family.
The story is well written, fast paced and action packed. The first real 'page turner' I've picked up in a while.
Thanks Mr McKenzie, I look forward to reading 'Switch'....just downloaded.

One of the very few books that I have rated at the maximum rating. Excellent fast reading with a minimal amount of characters to attempt to remember. The descriptive use of English places this book at the top of one’s read list . Would make a good action movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Cry For Help
This book is really good. A bus driver and his family cross from Canada into the US. When they go missing in a Mall he goes to the Police. When he is shown a photo of only him crossing the border, he realises they have been taken.
With his best friend he prepares to go to war with the kidnappers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced
I rarely review books but I enjoyed this one so much. It never lags and has a twist which although I had figured out the first part did not anticipate. I literally could not put it down and spent an entire Sunday reading it from start to finish. Well worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intense.
Interesting plot, but a lot of gruesome violence. Really not sure how this story would turn out until the very end. As a Canadian reader, I appreciated the Canadian connection and recognition of our Native Peoples’ role.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read
Quite an enjoyable story but I found the lack of motive until towards the end a bit strange. Plenty of action.
