Fireblood (Whispers from Mirrowen Book 1) Kindle Edition
Tyrus of Kenatos has made it his life’s work to banish the plagues that ravage the kingdoms. He believes the answer to ending the devastation lies in the Scourgelands. Yet, Tyrus’s first expedition into the cursed woods failed after being defeated by mysterious minions who stalked and killed most of his band.
Now a prisoner in his own tower, Tyrus has summoned his nephew Annon—a Druidecht possessing innate magic called the fireblood—on the guise of finding a hidden treasure with which to purchase his twin sister Hettie’s freedom. But in reality, Tyrus is using his niece and nephew, and their magic, as an opportunity to escape and resume his desperate mission. And to aid them, he has enlisted the warrior-monk Paedrin—who is almost as green as the siblings when it comes to traveling these troubled lands. The trio is determined, and along the way they grow to trust each other—and new additions to the group—in order to accomplish their missions…whether or not those missions are one and the same.
But the Arch-Rike—ruthless ruler of Kenatos—has learned of these plans, and has sent the fearsome Kishion to destroy all those that oppose him. Now Tyrus and his unwitting allies must face down not only the plague, but this new enemy—and fulfill their quest before a fresh horror is unleashed on the world…

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2014This is an epic in the making!
Like other reviewers I found the beginning rather slow, in terms of being able to get a feel for the story. Initially the introduction was a bit too fast paced and confusing, and put me off. I stopped reading the book for a month or so, and then picked it up again one day. I re-read the introduction and took time to absorb its nuance before pushing on into the main body of the text.
The use of existing, or barely veiled "real-world" racial group names for in-book races was a little jarring. I thought it rather lazy of the author. For example, the Cruithne (pronounced - Croon-yeh), a real world racial group that I am descended from, and the Romani - funnily enough an in-book travelling people, and blatantly based upon the Romanian Gypsies. The author admits to borrowing from real world history and cultures for his books, but it would have read better for him to have used more imagination and given his races original names.
All that aside I quickly grew to like the characters and the colourful world around them. All the main characters are developed fully and their own motives, philosophical beliefs, fears, prejudices and dreams all come to light as the story progresses - often combining to create conflict among them.
The plot is well thought out and vast, and opens up to the reader at the same pace of discovery by the characters. The book's pace increases as it continues and it is clear near the end that the adventure has not come to a natural conclusion.
Overall I found this book thoughtful, inspiring and rather beautiful, and the author's system of magic and nature quite frankly, well - Magic. I'm glad I discovered Jeff Wheeler and I'm about to launch into the sequel - Dryad Born.
Enjoy!

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2013I loved this authors trilogy of Muirwood and appreciate he uses the history and folk tales from various countries for the padding around his stories and this does make them feel more real, however I have to agree with a previous reviewer, that using the Romani title without any attempt to hide who he is referring to to is ill advised and gives us an unpleasant glimpse of the authors prejudices. The Romani or gypsies in this book have few redeeming features and the story line is heavily weighted with tales of child stealing, theft and murder by the Romani. As a regular visitor to Eastern Europe, I am appalled by the treatment of the Gypsies, and stories like this go nowhere to alleviating prejudice. I see the story ending suggests a follow up, but I feel I wont be buying any more from the series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2015Fireblood whisperers of Mirrowen Book 1
A grim tale more negative then hopeful. A story about one man's journey through harsh
lands to discover the truth about his apparently unloving uncle. He meets other characters from different cultures who have various kinds of magic skills and others with evil ones. It is a heavy book with little happiness along the way. There seems too much against him. The forest spirits help him yet are too easily extinguished by evil when they try to protect their beloved trees. The trees contain memories and are very precious yet too easily damaged by those with selfish intentions.
it is well written although I found it sadly depressing. There are many things to remember about the characters and concentration is necessary throughout, hence the glossary. I am only half way through but need a break from the gloominess. Nevertheless less i'v book book 2, so say no more!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2013Having read some of the reviews, I was a bit hesitant about this book. However, soon after starting to read it I was hooked. Contrary to some comments, it is not slow to start but quite accomplished in the way that it weaves the story rather than laying down loads of background. What's more, you don't get any of those embarrassing sections where the author has to backtrack a bit to explain an inconsistency in the plot or sequence of events.
On the face of it this is a standard quest story with a cast of characters whose lives and characters are flawed to the extent that they are all looking for redemption on some level. It scores though by having a different, rather sophisticated mythology. Sure, it 'borrows' elements and ideas from other fantasy books I have read but then it's all in the telling, isn't it. Characters who you don't expect to get killed do and the plot is a bit of a twisty turny thing that forces you to keep turning the page.
I must address a criticism that one reviewer makes concerning one of the groups that feature in this story and that is the Romani. That criticism centres around the stereotyping of what is admittedly a fairly easily identified racial group. Whilst acknowledging this, I would counsel against being too precious in this regard, otherwise English people would never watch Hollywood movies because they are always portrayed as being devious criminal masterminds and Irish people would take offence at the simple minded and crafty stereotypes offered up for them.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 April 2024Once you get into the characters and what skills they have, 2 are very similar and can be confusing
But the characters are compelling and a good read with more magic.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 April 2016A clever and integrated story between a set of characters that all had their part to play in someone plans. There were many parts of the book where I felt lost, or the sentence structure threw me off, but otherwise, it was a captivating read with many smart ideas and philosophies.
The characters all felt unique and had their own values and goals to fulfill. Each character had progressed and changed as a result of their adventure to give an exciting end (to the book).
I look forward to reading the next in the series.

Great character development and plot twists. I highly recommend.
I don’t like Amazons review requirement to say more, it is disingenuous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Anfang etwas lahm, danach immer besser

4.0 out of 5 stars Fireblood
Good story though compared to Lia and the others this one was not that amazing. The performance was below average at best and could not tell whom was whom and ended up reading instead. Still l enjoyed the story, thank you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good read, keeps you guessing.
I've read a few of Jeff Wheelers books and have enjoyed them all. This one had a slower start to it but enjoyed the world he's created. He keeps you guessing on the motives of all of characters. Nothing is as it seems at the beginning. All in all a good read.
