Thomas and Karen Donahue are the authors of the Kindle bestseller, Murder on the Isle of Capri. Worldwide, their Ryan--Hunter Mystery Thriller series has exceeded 100,000 downloads.
Karen A. Donahue, Ph.D.
Dr. Donahue earned her Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, where she graduated with highest honors. She taught Law and Society and Statistics for many years at the university level as a full professor. Her areas of expertise and interest include Law and Society, Criminology, Statistics, Law of the Sea, and Urban Issues. Within Criminology, she focuses on Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Ocean Law, and the criminal courts. Her field research has taken her to Ireland, Geneva, and West Africa. She has taught several courses in London and Paris.
Her current research interest is the history of the law of the sea. Most of her work on ocean law was completed at the United Nations Office, in the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, which is the world repository for international law of the sea materials.
She presented a paper on the law of the sea at the Law and Society Association conference in Berlin, Germany, summer of 2007. The title of the paper was “The Law of the Sea, 1800 to 1930: The Effects of the Second Billion People Added to the Planet.” In summer 2011, she presented a paper on the law of the sea at the Law and Society Association conference in San Francisco, California. The title of this paper was, “The Law of the Sea: Early History. The Effects of the First Billion People Added to the Planet.” In June of 2012, she presented a paper on the demographics of ocean law at the Law and Society Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Dr. Donahue completed most of her ocean law research aboard their boat docked in a Newport Beach marina. Her latest passion was writing mystery/thrillers, and she recently co-published the following books with her late husband, Thomas Donahue: Silenced, Assassin, Murder on the Isle of Capri, Cliffs of Portofino, Murder under the Bridges of Venice, Serial Killer in Paris, Moral Compass, Trapped, and Power Corrupts.
Thomas C. Donahue
Unfortunately, Thomas passed away in January 2022, of a brain tumor. Writing the mystery thrillers was one of the greatest joys in his life. He always had a smile on his face when he was writing. One of his other joys was doing research for the books, particularly the trips we took to all the locations in the books to do that research. Rest in peace, Tom!
Karen and Tom wrote their books aboard their yacht at Harbor Island. Their mornings were filled with the sounds of sea gulls and the occasional harbor seal.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 May 2014Having previously read another book in this series Murder on the Isle of Capri, Italy (Ryan-Hunter Mysteries) I was sufficiently impressed by it to read this, the first of the series. The early chapters are very different from the beginning of the later book as the characters are described and the relationships between them are set up, consequently it takes a while for the action to get under way. Even after the first murder has taken place, there is a hiatus as the various elements which will come to underpin this and future stories are laid in place. These foundations are the essential framework to the partnership of John and Marin.
Once the investigation gets under way, there are many surprises in store for the reader as we learn more about the background of the main characters. Marin and John cannot be taken at face value as they both have secret pasts which they are not at liberty to talk about; they even surprise each other. The tension builds throughout this book until it becomes quite breathtaking at times. The only thing we know about the killer is his name - if in fact that is his name, and that he was instructed to do what he did, we don't know who instructed him or why. We are led to believe that he is good at what he does, but is he as good as he thinks he is? Three lives depend on him not being quite perfect, and crucially, on people working together as a cohesive team, despite the instructions to the contrary from various departments of law enforcement - thank goodness for a maverick DA. The high tension is at times, lightened by moments of mirth which made me chuckle
Having spent most of a relaxing Sunday reading it, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would readily recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 October 2015Tjis is the first book I have read by these authors and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters came alive very quickly and their personalities were defined very soon into the story. Didn't mean they didn't have secrets though! Fast paced, believable, detailed and very, very readable. Would thoroughly recommend. Will be looking for more stories by these two.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 July 2017I became thoroughly engrossed in this world of computer hackers, billionaire yachtsmen and feisty, capable women. I like the way there are strong female and male characters. I am hooked on these stories. I only started reading these on holiday and am already on book 4.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 2015if you like to watch NCIS and Covert Affairs, you'll enjoy this read. it starts of a bit slow, but once it gets going is a great read that you want to keep reading until you get to the end. Do Cameron and Marin get the bad guy? Does Marin end up in a relationship with John? what were their back stories? the first of a series of books - can't wait to read the next one.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 June 2017Wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleased to find it gripping and tense especially at the end. Would like to read more in this series as it ticked all the boxes for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 April 2017I'm into boats and it was a good story to read. Very good for a free book! There were a couple of parts of the story that were a little unbelievable but it was captivating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy Cat and Mouse Thriller
It’s an action thriller like nothing I have read and I have read thousands of books and hundreds in the same genre. It features plenty of violence but none of the gratuitous gore, foul language, and sex so many books of this type ruin their storyline with.
The good characters are real heroes while the bad are as cold hearted as they come. This book is a winner and I will continue to read the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A WELL WRITTEN, ALBEIT CONVOLUTED BUT EASY TO FOLLOW, ASSASSIN TYPE YARN THAT GRABS YOU AND JUST WON'T LET GO.
Needless to say I really enjoyed this stand alone novel. Each character helped in their own expert or inept way to make this a great read. Even John Hunter, our main hero, who has a great brain for computors but had never fired a gun, finally does, and we now know why he hadn't before. Prof. Marin Ryan, John's great love from college days, on the other hand is ex-FBI, smart and able, and as the story unfolds, we come to understand the initial clandestine murder victim should have been her. And I'm not giving anything away here. If you like murder, mayhem, Navy Seals, yachts, CIA, FBI, Harbour Police, Cops, and a really well done exciting yarn, then you've hit paydirt here. Best of all the price is exceptional - looks like a good and promising series to follow.
