“...sure to keep the reader on edge throughout the chapters, and leaves you wanting more at the end. This, to me, is the mark of a true bestseller. It leaves me wanting more, and will leave any reader wanting her to hurry up and release the other books! Any fans of The Hunger Games and/or Twilight will instantly be captivated. I will state, I am NOT a Twilight/vampire fan AT ALL, but I was captivated by this book. You must read to know more! I recommend this book to anyone who wants to "get lost" in a new book, and for any English teacher looking to get their kids hooked on reading. I'm confident in recommending this, and look forward to many more works in this series and by this author.”

“This is a very exciting read. Would appeal to the Twilight fan-base, but has definitely put it's own twist on the genre. A very well constructed piece, all the more impressive for being a debut novel.”

“I loved this story! It was a fantastic start to a series which I hope to see more from soon, and I loved the characters! There was also a great twist in the tale, and it was original and well-thought out. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new in their paranormal romance/fantasy section, and I can't wait to see what this author comes up with in her next books!”

“I really enjoyed the characters, settings and narrative and couldn't put it down. So many little twists and details all the way through, super. I can't wait to read the next in the series and would love to see it as a film.”

Vanessa Wester’s main published work is ‘THE EVOLUTION TRILOGY’, which is comprised of HYBRID, her debut novel, followed by COMPLICATIONS and RETURN. The prequel to the trilogy, EMILY, is also available. This collection of paranormal romance novels takes the reader from Southampton, U.K., to the Amazon, Brazil, in a tale of twisted chance and consequence.

In addition, she has written a novelette called FIRST DATE, which is based on her true story. She has also published, and included stories in, six anthologies to raise money for fantastic causes.

Vanessa also painstakingly put together a collection of original diary entries and letters of her Beanland ancestors in the book, JOURNEY TO GIBRALTAR. The letters were sent to and from locations such as Lancashire, Jamaica and eventually Gibraltar. It gives the reader an idea of what life was like around 1870, and the everyday occurrences of Gibraltar back then, and was published to commemorate 150 years of BEANLAND ancestors on the famous rock.

Writing is one of her passions, reading the other. The day she decided to start writing her ideas down she found another way to lose herself in a book, whilst finding an outlet for her imagination. It is the best way she can think of to escape from everyday life.

    Hybrid by Vanessa Wester

Steven Thorn has just started at Southampton University. He is confident, honest, hard-working and intelligent. When he bumps into Caitlin Chance, he notices an instant connection. Something he has never experienced before. Steven has spent pretty much most of his life keeping himself to himself.

Yet, a few months into his first year and unbeknown to Steven, his entire life is about to change. His family have a past, that even he wasn't aware of. Until now. Will Steven cope with the change in his life, or will his entire world come crashing down?

Hybrid is book one in The Evolution Trilogy written by Vanessa. Complications and Return are the following two books, with a prequel Emily available to also download (see bottom of page for download links).

The story is told from the viewpoint of Steven Thorn, in third person narrative. I felt like I am on the outside of his life, watching it. I could see and feel what he was going through, whilst being safely out of the way.
Vanessa has used two main settings for the story, Southampton UK and the Amazon Rainforest. The way that story transitions between the two countries is really well written. The journey, for the reader, was smooth. Vanessa took us on a journey across the world in order to travel between the two places.
Hybrid definitely falls into the 'world of books' as a paranormal romance. Anyone that knows me, knows that I tend to avoid romance stories. This book works out perfectly for me - if you chuck a bit of supernatural (or paranormal, whichever you prefer) or a murder into it and I'm all in.

I'm trying something new with this review, in that I am going to try and evaluate the book in just three words. So, here goes... Hybrid is Interesting, Beautiful and Conserving. The story is extremely interesting, the take on a story that has been written over and over by many an author is completely different to any other that I have read (and I have read a lot of books in this genre). The way that Vanessa describes the surroundings and the settings, including the characters, makes me feel as though everyone and everything is beautiful to look at (even though they may not be). The final word I have chosen is Conserving. The reason for this word is that I feel that Vanessa has managed to keep a conserved approach throughout the whole story. I am hoping this will expand more in the following books. I love the fact that the information has been reserved, and we (as a reader) have only been fed the basic information that we need to know. Very much like the main character, Steven, to give something away to us would indeed give something away to him.

I recommend that you read this book if you get the chance, you will not be disappointed. The book is currently available for FREE on both AMAZON UK and AMAZON US as a kindle e-book. Don't worry if you don't have a kindle, you can read it through the app on your phone, or on your PC/Laptop.

Hybrid begins being mainly told through the eyes of the character Caitlin - a girl beginning her course at University after moving away from family life. The author does well to introduce all the characters here - there are a lot, she paints their pictures well as they meet, settling into their new surroundings and Halls of Residence.

It's not until her love interest, Stephen, is properly introduced that you realise there is more to this story than meets the eye, introducing a nice twist to keep the pages turning.

I thought this story really took off in the second half, the spin the author has taken on the `normal' vampire story is an interesting one and I really felt for this new main character and his situation. I look forward to finding out where this story is going to go.

    A great debut.

It took me a while to get into this book, especially as the prologue felt completely unrelated to begin with (though it became clearer with later events). About half way through I found myself interested to know how the story would pan out and eager to learn more about the world that was being described. For the most part, I enjoyed the world that Vanessa Wester has created, though I have to say that I did find some parts to be unbelievable and over-the-top, and other parts occurred too quickly without enough explanation. For this reason, I have given this book a rating of 3 stars.

I feel that, most of the time, Vanessa Wester did a good job of weaving background information into the plot, though there were also parts that felt a bit clumsy to me. On the whole, the characters were well developed and the dialogue was believable, though I did struggle to believe some of the actions of the characters. Although there were parts that did not work for me, including the twist at the end, all in all I found this to be a promising debut novel and an interesting concept.

This book is introduced with a prologue, which initially I didn't understand, but it really helped once the main story began to unfold

The opening chapter of Hybrid begins with our introduction to one of the main protagonist, Caitlin, and gives a narrative about her first semester at University and attempts to settle in on campus. We also begin to meet quite a few of the other minor characters and these fill out the narrative rather nicely.

Before too long we are then become acquainted with the main protagonist of the piece (and her eventual love interest) Steven.

From the first description we have of Steven it is obvious that he is a very special individual and this draws you in and piqued my interest as a lover of all things paranormal.

The attraction between the two is almost tangible and instantaneous but not at the cost of the storyline in this instance.

They gradually develop into "an item" and then their romance is cut short by the appearance of some of Steven's long lost and also unknown family members, and with that a history that he cannot run away from. The consequence is that all their lives are altered irrevocably and also apparently forever.

This story has a twist in the tale regarding the "vampires" in this story as it takes a refreshing slant on the usual vampire tale, which is ultimately explained extremely well.

I loved this book and especially the detail regarding Freshers week and it took me back to my own memories of that time at University.

I was captivated and finished the book in short shrift and was compelled to immediately download the second in the series "Complications"

A thoroughly well deserved 5* and an author to look out for in the future

Vanessa Wester has a great first book in 'Hybrid'. If this is her first, we all have a lot to look forward to in the coming years as she brings out more of this series and hopefully other stories.

The opening is set at a University in England. Wester immeadiately drew me into the worlds of the two main characters, Steven and Caitlin, as well as some very well established secondary characters. I was invested in her creations right away.

Then Vanessa throws me a unique twist I was totally unprepared for, even though I had an inkling of what was eventually going to happen. It's not a simple 'young vampires in love' story by any means. There is a lot more to the core story and how it drives her characters forward. I was actually disappointed when it ended; I wanted more. And from the epiloge, I believe the next book will be even better!

As a further note, I read both 'Hunger Games' and 'Twilight' at the insistence of my family (all female). 'Hybrid' was much more engaging and believable than either of those books. I found 'Twilight' very shallow and simple. 'Humger Games' is better but still just 'Gladiators' for kids. 'Hybrid' is a step above both these books and I would not be surprised to see it on film some time soon.

'Hybrid' is an engaging, fun, twisting, page turner that bodes well for Ms. Wester's writing career. I'm ready to grab books two!

3.5 stars, and that mostly because this is a YA/NA book (which isn't normally my target reading).

A group of kids are starting their first year at university, trying to fit in, adjusting to being away from home, reinventing themselves into who they will become. For some, it is easier than for others. Caitlin shares a hall with three other girls, one of which is horribly homesick and struggling to fit in. Lonely, homesick girls make the easiest targets, but before she has a chance to go home, she dies of an apparent suicide.

Steven is handsome and confident, and he and Caitlin share an instant bond. When Caitlin returns home to sort out her hall-mate's death, another woman targets Steven, leaving him confused and with an odd bruise on his neck.

Caitlin returns to university to pick up where she left off with Steven and the two rapidly become a couple, until one night when she is kidnapped to lure Steven out - and then he is kidnapped and all memory of him and his existence is expunged.

What is Steven? And what are all the people claiming to be a superior race who are secreted away inside a volcano deep in the Amazonian jungle?

The story was interesting. The author creates a hidden society, a modern-day Utopia, and yet humanity almost always chooses freedom over confined quarters, no matter how perfect the living conditions. I think the author has done an excellent job showing the differing personalities and societal cliques. She's done a nice job of ending the first book in the trilogy, teasing you into the next book without leaving you wanting for answers to the theme in the first book. Worth the read.

pretty good, took a while to get to the meat of the matter, and then at the end I felt a little like I got left holding the bag, I know it has a sequel, but I just think that it could have ended with a little more closure. But I do kinda want to read the next book. So I guess mission accomplished.
