Ian Loome grew up in England, Africa and Canada. A former journalist, he covered stories ranging from executions and homicides to fun features and celebrity interviews. He served several stints as a legislature reporter, assignment editor and newsroom manager. He writes the Liam Quinn Mysteries, the Joe Brennan spy novels and numerous stand-alone titles, as well as ghostwriting for other authors. In his spare time, he plays blues guitar and has toured with a radio charting blues band. He lives with his partner Lori in Canada.

Incredible as this may be, he is a very appealing character and gripped my attention from the novel's first page. He is now an insurance investigator, trying to live down his past and earn enough to pay his debts. When a Vermeer is stolen from a gallery, Quinn begins to unravel a complex plot...
    The picture of life among the Irish Catholic population of Philadelphia, and particularly Quinn's own family, is vivid and heartwarming. The plot is tightly written and well-paced, the characters really interesting and the denouement is satisfying. Great literature it is not, but great entertainment it certainly is!

    This book had one of the best opening paragraphs I've ever read. I loved Liam Quinn. He is a great looking, well-rounded character with a great sense of humour. Coming from a tough neighbourhood but a strong, moral Irish-American background, he is now full of remorse for the pain he caused his cop father and brother when he was seduced into a life of crime. Eager to make amends, he combines his artistic skills as a forger of oriental artworks and his sporting abilities as a boxer in his now respectable profession of an insurance fraud investigator. Liam's irresistible trait of not realising how attractive he is to the opposite sex (well, it is a work of fiction!) adds humour to the story as does his relationship with the gorgeous Nora. Neither of them seem to appreciate the difficulties of being 'best friends' with a member of the opposite sex and you are inclined to want to shake some sense into them both. Admittedly, some of the characters are a little over the top, like the mobsters who are stereotypical Italian gangsters and the Irish cops who are all good guys with hearts of gold. There is even that compulsory character in every Irish Catholic family, the priest brother. However, for me, the stereotypes just added to the charm and the humour. This was a thoroughly enjoyable story and I'd happily read more of Liam Quinn's adventures.

    This P.I. / cops and robbers tale follows a recent trend where the hero is bad boy turned good. Qinn is a good man with a sound back story who has served time for art forgery. He is retained by an insurance company to investigate art thefts. His current investigation should be quite straight forward, but of course it goes much deeper, into the realms of organised crime. It has very little suspense and it has very little mystery, but it unfolds at a good pace, is well written and has engaging characters. I agree with whoever said it is a good holiday read.

    I really enjoyed this book. The characters are great and Liam the main character comes across really well. Its great that this isn't just another 'war hero, turned cop' book. I like the way the family is included too.
    Great pace, lots of action without any gore. A good who dunnit, and twists along the way Clever. And fresh. I will be downloading the next book in this series. If you like plenty of action, a few gangsters and a great story definitely give this author and book a go.

    My first Liam Quinn book, and probably not my last. An easy read, mostly investigative questioning but with action pieces showing ability to win fights without the usual knives or guns. Not trying to clone Reacher, which is a nice change, these days. Self published, I believe, with a noticeable lack of proofreading, but not bad enough to spoil a good story and likeable character. A new series to read through!

    Quinn is a fabulous character so real and raw but with a sense of humour. Great character.

    Im a fan of crime stories but this was different with fine art being involved. The author was very knowledgable and made for an interesting story.

    I really enjoyed this book and will definitely read more books by LH Thomson.
    The main character, Quinn, is a loveable ex-rogue who you like from the beginning as he fights his way back into everyone's good books whilst trying to solve the mystery.
    The writing may not be as tight as it could be, and there are several instances of missing or repeated words, but apart from these minor niggles, the story moves along very well and is an easy enjoyable read.
    It's quite difficult to write in the first person, as you can only tell what the narrator can see at any one time, but LH Thomson manages very well to portray everything we need to know and everything Quinn tells us is believable.
    A good story and I look forward to more of Quinn.

    It's well written and well thought out. However the supposed wit, I was hoping just never seemed to materialise. The back story, the family, took up too much of the book, some would have been good, with more in future books, but it seems the author wanted to give it all in one go
    It's basically a detective story, where Liam is an insurance company investigator, one major and one minor theft to investigate. One shows his skill at getting to the truth, the other shows his soft side
    Not for me, but I think many others will enjoy it immensely

    This was a truly fun read. Quinn is an interesting young guy, and I wanted him to do well from the start, or at least from the point where his family started picking on him because he'd been to jail. He doesn't complain about this; in fact, he thinks he deserves it. But he records it. Quinn is not just a smart thug, as many PI protagonists tend to be; he is educated and is a gifted artist, although he does not, at the time this book takes place, permit himself to do any painting. The setting is very well done, with the local bar becoming the sort of place the reader almost feels at home in, and other locations being clearly delineated without verbosity. The plot was well worked out, with surprises here and there to tweak one's interest. The only criticism given by other reviewers that I would echo is that the language is rough, with even Quinn's brother the priest swearing, and the "f" word recurring over and over. There is no explicit sex or excessive violence. There were a few proofreading errors, but the number was well below that at which I say a book is unreadable. I'll probably read another L. H. Thomson.

    But our hero Liam Quinn has his problems with his brothers since he did time for - forging Japanese painters! A jailbird in a typical Irish family - the mother a perfect housewife, the father a policeman near to retirement? Where one son is a priest, but cannot forgive his own brother? The other is also a policeman, and does not think very highly of Liam's new job as an insurance investigator. Even when he is generally solving his cases - and occasionally some of the Police ones, too - and earns his money honestly now. OK, an old-style bankrobber is tolerable even in an Irish clan - but an art- forger??? NEVER!
    In this very interesting and amusing crime story Liam Quinn hunts for nothing less than a very expensive, very old painting by Vermeehr, stolen from an art gallery. The insurance is high, so his boss would be very happy if Quinn could solve the case and bring the good piece back. But the robbery was a highly atypical one, and soon other complications come our hero's way. Mostly in form of armed brutes, so it helps that Quinn is a boxer, a light-heavyweight. Because as an ex-con and private investigator he is still not allowed to carry heat. But our hero is very resorceful, and most of the time escapes with the help of his old Firebird. And he has not only brawn but brains, too. So at the very end everyone is happy - except the bad boys - looking at a lot of jail-time...
    Fast-paced, intelligently constructed, with the right twists and turns, this first crime novel of a series of 9 about the studied art expert Liam Quinn kept me entertained until the very end. The right balance between the typical Philly copster humourism and the absence of both, floods of blood and too hot scenes makes this almost old-fashioned noir a very readable one. The characters are really credible, the bad types like the good boys. The storyline lets the reader guess together with the hero and his helpers, and that is a very good idea in my eyes. Because it guarantees much more real entertainment and suspence. Nowadays too many so-called 'thrillers' leave me flummoxed in the very end, because half of the book comes along like a bad puzzle.
    I am actually reading the third book of the series, and the ideas of the author are always fresh and entertaining. I will surely read and review other books featuring Liam Quinn.
