About the author

In 1977 Roisin Meaney finished a sentence and won a car. The sentence was 'I would like to win a Ford Fiesta because ...my father won't let me drive his.' Over the years that followed she wrote a lot more sentences and won a lot more prizes. In 2001 she finally decided to keep writing sentences until she filled a book, and in 2008, with three published novels under her belt, she gave up her teaching job to become a fulltime writer. Since 2001 she's written twenty-one adult novels and three children's books. Her work has been translated into German, Spanish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Polish and Slovenian. Two of her books have also been published in the US: Semi-Sweet (Irish title Love in the Making) and Life Drawing for Beginners (Irish title The Things We Do for Love), and several books have been distributed in Australia and New Zealand by Hachette Australia.
All of Roisin's novels have made it into the Irish bestseller list. Four of them, One Summer (2012), After the Wedding (2014), I'll Be Home for Christmas (2015) and The Birthday Party (2019) form a series; all are set on Roone, a small make-believe island (but strongly inspired by the very real Valentia Island) located off the west coast of Ireland.
Roisin was shortlisted in the 2022 Irish Book Awards in the Library Association of Ireland Author of the Year category. Her latest book, Moving On, was published in Ireland on Feb 6th 2025, and will be published in the UK on July 31 2025. She is currently working on a novel that's earmarked for a Spring 2026 publication. She lives in a West of Ireland cottage with three greedy cats. What can I say? This book had me from the first sentence! The lilt of the Irish accents, the interesting characters all written with such depth and care I felt as if I had known them all my life. At the end of the book it was as if I was leaving the island very reluctantly because I'd miss my friends so much!!
I love it when a book grabs me like this....not since reading Maeve Binchy's or Mary O'Sullivan's books have I enjoyed such a good Irish story!!
Nell is engaged to be married to Tim who commutes to the island on weekends from Dublin. The plan is that he will move to the island for good once they are married. Tim's brother James has loved Nell from afar since their first meeting, but he puts his love aside in loyalty to his brother and becomes her best friend. Nell decides to let out her cottage as a holiday home for 6 wks because the extra income will make the difference between an average wedding and one that Nell longs for. Nell's mother manages the tenants and cleans the house for her daughter, unaware of what the future holds for her marriage and life that up to now she had regarded as happy and comfortable.
Life gets in the way of plans though as it so often does, and Tim finds putting up with sharing a single bed on weekends in a poky room at the back of Nell's hair salon is just too much to deal with and moves in with his brother James.
Along the way of this fantastic tale, there is heartache, joys, breakthroughs for a few lacking in the motivation or self esteem to progress, new love found, love lost, as well as a death of a much loved and admired resident.
This book has it all! I felt sad when I had read the last page - if only I could move to the island of Roone and live there with these wonderful characters!!
Roisin Meaney has done a fantastic job with this book and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story that is credible and full of feeling.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 January 2017Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseHaving recently found Roisin Meaney, I didn't realise that there was a series of "Roone" books so am reading them in the wrong order! I have read "One Summer" after "I'll Be Home for Christmas" instead of before but I reckon that made it all the more interesting. Having read what happened when everyone was happily married etc. it was lovely to find out how they all got to where they are now.
Roone sounds a lovely place to live, all the people seem very nice - especially when things don't go according to plan or something sad happens. The animals, especially George, are delightful!
I am now going on to "After the Wedding" which I believe is between the 2 I have read - can't wait to see how things progress.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 June 2018Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseMy Mum and Gran were Irish and the story took me back to the many summer holidays we spent in the country town in Tipperary where they grew up. Thoroughly enjoyed this book from start to finish, love the expressions they use and the wonderful descriptions of the characters and felt I'd know my way around Roone if I went there. Can't wait to get stuck in to the sequels.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis is a most enjoyable story. The characters were so true to life and engrossing. It was a pleasure to read about their lives on the Island.. For me, just reading it, felt like a holiday! (My bags are packed!)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2019Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseLoved this story. Nell lets her house out for the summer, 3 sets of guests each taking 2 weeks. Their stories intertwine as they become part of the life of the little community. There are Happy parts, sad parts, problems solved, new problems happening and sad events. One summer that changes lives - beautiful.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 June 2017Format: Kindle EditionVerified PurchaseThis story could be used as a cosy Sunday evening serial. There are so many characters and sub plots it would be perfect. I did enjoy it but it is a bit overly strung out and parts are too convenient. I didn't like Tim but I ended up thinking Nell was a bit self centred really, expecting him to always travel 4 hours every weekend after a long week at work! I like the way though the book is divided up and has short stories within it and I did love a lot of the characters. A warning though, the book finishes with the Dec wedding chapter and not the May chapter which is an excerpt from the sequel, which I don't think I will be buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Irish Vacation!
I had the most wonderful weekend transported to Roone Island, Ireland and became as besotted with it as Nell, James, and the three sets of visitors to Nell's home. I generally read crime fiction and needed a break. The similarity to Maeve Binchy mentioned in reviews decided me - and the bargain price didn't hurt! There were no editing or proofreading issues to detract from this very pleasant tale. Nell is getting married, and to raise money to pay for her own perfect wedding, she decides to offer her house as a vacation rental. Three different guests reserve the six weeks offered. The reader feels the island's magic through not only Nell's eyes, who loves it, but through the eyes of Gavin, the first renter, Laura and her twins who follow, and Imelda, Miriam, and Vernon who are the final season guests. All are very well drawn, and it is through their experiences that the reader meets the island inhabitants. Walter Thompson, a wonderful widower, Andy, a young man learning to cope with life's tragedies, James, Nell's friend who wishes to be more, and on and on. Not a character is one dimensional or unnecessary to the story. There is sadness, joy, fear, so many emotions that move the story forward. The best news, though, is that I just discovered that there is a sequel, After the Wedding.
