Writing Style - 5.0/5.0 (Outstanding)
In the last two years, I have become a huge fan of this genre, and especially for those examples where the authors have taken the time to be accurate in the fact-base and consistent-yet-flexible in the fictional elements. Lukeman has hit both of those nails on the head.
White Jade is fine example of a genre that is filled with Bond, Bourne and others of that ilk. This is a powerful, flowing narrative which really does take the reader on a tremendous ride into a world of covert government operatives and terrorists with a chilling agenda.
The dialogue is balanced and precise, the atmospheric writing superb.
Character Development - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
The cast Lukeman has built for this story is very impressive. Each character is memorable for their traits and strength of purpose to do what must be done. Even the villain of the piece is cleverly portrayed and I felt that there was very adequate development in every case.
I did feel that the eventual turn of events in China would have been more dramatic if there had been some twists along the way, especially with regard to how much influence the general held in the build up to his plan, and how plans by both sides came to fruition. Admittedly, what was there worked very nicely and gave a solid, credible feel to the events.
Descriptive - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
This book fed my appetite for good descriptive more than adequately. From the factual locations to the fictional ones, each was built precisely and beautifully brought to life around the characters.
A clear knowledge of the technical aspects of this work was easily apparent. From weapons to transports, scenery to environments, this was spot-on. At no point in the book did I feel ignorant of the facts or lost in unnecessary technical language.
I should say that, equally, for the uninitiated there is a significant amount of detail to take on board, and where the author has accomplished all of this detailing with the minimum of fuss and some excellent writing, some may find it a little daunting.
Don't be put off. The ride is well worth the effort.
Language & Grammar - 5.0/5.0 (Outstanding)
The choice and use of language throughout is superb, and the editing is of a consistently high quality from start to finish. This combines to make this into a very good, very entertaining read.
Plot - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent) - VERY MINOR SPOILERS
This is not one of those multi-layered, over-worked stories with more sub-plots than characters. Indeed, it is refreshing in its simplicity and the few sub-plots which are at work, are nicely defined and serve to tie up loose ends when needed.
If I were to be picky, I felt the `mole' hunt was a little weak and created in a way that made it a little too simple. Nevertheless, the author dealt with all the atmosphere surrounding this with subtle excellence.
I enjoyed the tone throughout the book, especially the political stand-off and the resulting aftermath, though again, it would have been nice to have the action ramped up and to have had the tension of this in the story, rather than as a summary footnote.
All lead up to a nicely twisted ending which was worth the wait.
General - 4.5/5.0 (Excellent)
For me, in Alex Lukeman I have found an author to rival Fleming and Ludlum, with his eye for detail and excellent storytelling.
As the first in the series, you don't always expect a first class read, but this was and I thoroughly recommend to fans of the genre, and fans of action/adventure novels too.
I am looking forward to the next in the series.
5 Stars. Very much deserved.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2024A fun thriller, with plenty to keep the reader occupied. If you want a beach read, or something for a long aircraft trip, this would be perfect.
I liked some of the twists, and as a reader who loves action, I was well satisfied.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 September 2024This is a very exciting and tension-filled novel. It is action-packed from beginning to end with frightening insights of just how dangerous nuclear weapons can be when things go wrong. White Jade is easy to read, a real page-turner, and benefits even more from the superb narration in Audible form. Alex Lukeman is a master thriller writer, and the twists, turns, and surprises continue to the very end, because ‘just when you think it’s all over . . .’

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 February 2013If you want a thriller thats fast moving, enjoyable and upbeat rather than depressing, with a beginning, middle & end, you might enjoy this book, which is excellent Kindle fodder, good for travelling, holidays or evenings. While not exactly a demanding read, there is enough charecterisation to make you consider the next one in the series. If you like reading about secret temples, hidden trasures, blowing things up, secret agencies, attractive female academics with martial arts skills, toubled ex military types, threats to civilisation as we know, it that are mildly improbable, give this book a try. Some of the details, like the gratuious trashing of an expensive Mercedes & the cat with digestive problems, give a humerous lift to the book that more pedestrian genre examples don't have..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 July 2015What a brilliant read. I spotted this book and bought it for 99p as the write up looked very interesting and I have to say I wasn't disappointed. It was intriguing from the start and as the story progressed it got more and more exciting and I found I had a hard job putting it down.
It was extremely well written and the characters were believable and well rounded which makes the reader care about what happens to them and leaves you wanting to know more about them, even when you get to the end of the novel.
I have to say that this is one of the better and most exciting books I have read for a long time - very much like the Jack Reacher novels and the John Puller novels (David Baldacci) that I love so much. I enjoyed it so much that I am now reading the second in the series - The Lance - which is unusual for me as I normally don't read two books by the same author in succession but on this occasion I just can't wait to find out more about Nick Carter and Selena Connor.
My husband is also reading this book and enjoying it as much as I did.
Well done Alex Lukeman - I will paying a visit to your website to find out more about you as I think you are a very accomplished author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2013I found "White Jade" to be a well constructed and enjoyable thriller. There are linked elements of international conflict and ancient history set within a fast paced style of writing.
Others have given good summaries of the plot so I will restrict my reflections to why I found it enjoyable.
There was in the first instance the inclusion of a fictionalised link between the worlds of ancient China and the Mediterranean. I would have liked to know a bit more of this and felt the uncovering of this was a bit too smooth but it was still interesting and an intriguing take on the Minoan civilisation.
I also loved the description of the events in Tibet - I have never visited (but want to do so some day) but I found it easy to imagine the setting that seemed both bleak and beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful- INDIANA JONES MEETS 007 !!
I had heard about Alex Lukeman's book White Jade prior to having his submission request come to the PRG Review Team. I was also delighted to be challenged to do the story as a Dual Review. To make it even more appealing, the next Dual Review was slated to have a Guest Dueler, for a change of pace for your reading enjoyment. So here I am writing this review, and so is Andrew Valentine, writer of Bitter Things, as my Siskel to his Ebert or the other way around.
When I began White Jade, I could see this was going to take me to places I loved. Murder, foreign intrigue, FBI, CIA, plots and plenty of action.
Elizabeth Harker is in charge of a group called Project. She works within the levels of the FBI and CIA and Homeland Security, with technology at her hands to analyze threats to our country. She is a woman who has a voice to the President.
William Connor was a very rich man who was tortured and killed, his home ransacked, and there was a transfer of 4 million dollars from his accounts to accounts in China. He was a personal friend of the President. Project was asked to look into this.
Elizabeth Harker has contacted Nicholas Carter to come to her office. He is recently back from Afghanistan, dealing with emotional issues from his last mission, and the loss of his fiancé, which has changed his view on life. Upon hearing of the way Connors was killed, `it became personal, and Nick needed personal cause God and country wasn't working for him anymore'
Enter Dr. Selena Connor, attractive, in her thirties, PhD in oriental and ancient language, niece to the deceased. Harker tells her that they feel her Uncle was killed for a book he had acquired in Bhutan. Selena reveals it is a copy of an ancient text about immortality. She has no idea where it is, but after further investigation on her Uncles laptop, a letter to her tells them where the book is possibly hidden.
This is where our story unfolds. Mr Lukeman has done a wonderful job of introducing the reader to all the players. We are in San Francisco, China, and back switching scenery from one part of the globe to the other. The intrigue, the lust for power, the thrill of the hunt, all add to the beauty of the ruins I could see, the fear in the tunnels I could taste, and the miracle of finding artifacts untouched by man for centuries. Yes, it truly was Indiana Jones meets 007.
The story was well described and points well documented. I love a thriller where the good guys are so good and the bad guys are unredeemable. The quest for POWER makes this story come to life and we always pray the good guys win. I do not want to add any more to the story, as **Spoilers** are a no no with my reviews. So with the weather getting cooler, if you had the idea of curling up with a good Mystery/ Thriller, White Jade would be a good bet.
I might also add as I read this story, ideas kept forming in my mind as to who would play the bad guys, of course I had already picked who I envisioned to play Selena and Nick on the Big Screen. Kate Hudson would be a good Selena and Alex O'Louglin from Hawaii Five- O would be a wonderful Nick. How about Kathy Bates for Elizabeth Harker??? Hmmm anyone looking for a great screen play?
Mr Lukeman has graciously sent on to me the next book in this series called The Lance, which I will put on my personal TBR pile and review for you at a later date...

5.0 out of 5 stars A good writer, and getting better with each book.
Call it four-and-a-half stars. I managed to get into the Project series with Seventh Pillar (#3) and then The Tesla Secret (#5). They were OK reads, but I thought the characters were a bit thin. White Jade changed my attitude. The Selena character, in particular, began to catch my interest. I could sense the character development that had taken place in the later books.
Mr. Lukeman does not do characters as well as some of the other authors I like to read. But he tells a great story, blending ancient histories and mysteries with real world issues. He has done very good research on those fascinating concepts, and his references to military weapons and tactics are very convincing. I am going to stick with him, and work my way through the rest of the series.I recommend White Jade to you, with the hope that you will start your own journey with the Project.

5.0 out of 5 stars As rare as white jade.
This book took me by surprise. I stumbled on it as a free download through an email subscription I receive and didn't have high hopes. But how lucky for me that I found it! It's a great read, with engaging, likeable characters and a fast paced plot. I don't often give out 5 stars but this time they're well deserved. I'll definitely be reading more of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolut unterhaltsam

A well written thriller with exciting characters and a believable storyline. Would make an excellent film. Will read more by this author.
