Deviants (The Dust Chronicles Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 1,364 ratings

In Glory’s world, different means deviant—and dead.

In a post-apocalyptic world, where the earth is buried by asteroid dust that’s mutated the DNA of some humans, an orphaned sixteen-year-old, Glory, must hide and protect her younger brother. If their Deviant abilities are discovered, they’ll be expunged—kicked out of the dome to be tortured and killed by the Shredders. Glory would give anything to get rid of her unique ability to kill with her emotions, especially when Cal, the boy she’s always liked, becomes a spy for the authorities. But when her brother is discovered, and she learns their father, who was expunged for killing their mother, is still alive, she must escape the domed city that’s been her entire world.

Outside in the ruins, they’re pursued by the authorities and by sadistic, scab-covered Shredders who are addicted to the lethal-to-humans dust now covering the planet. Glory’s quests to transport herself and her brother to safety make up the thrilling and fascinating first volume of The Dust Chronicles.

This excellent new series is well written and populated with three dimensional, believable characters. This fascinating storyline is explored over a series of three books, of which this is the first. I am waiting with bated breath for the third in the series which will be published next month.

Good book for teenagers and up.

I enjoyed this book and read it with the audiobook which is very good too. There are some great little scenes particularly between Burn and Glory I won't mention them in detail as I don't want to give them away but there's a few particularly when she sees things for the first time for real eg the Sun.

I like the story, the concept of this book. It was interesting enough for me to keep reading anyway. But there was no really excitement or determination inspired in me to race to the end to find out what was happening. OK it's all set up for the next one or a series, but I just didn't care enough to want to buy the next one in the series.

An ok way to pass a few hours but no more than that.

Well written and engaging. The story pops along and doesn't rely on the 'deviance' to bring the suspense. The lead character, Glory, is believable moving from fear to anger and regret. Although aimed at a younger demographic than me I really enjoyed this.

Best game I have played all year.
All these people with their stupid reviews not looking at the game that it is and comparing it to WOW it's an FPS RPG. There is so much more than just the story the game begins at Lvl 20.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book - good pace, relatable characters (if you ignore the whole mutation by space dust aspect ;)). If you like deviant twilight hunger games then definitely give it a go!

The book ambitions were not matched by the details of the narrative. Some parts were good but few were just pedestrian. Perhaps we have come to expect more from this crowded genre!

Captivating and moving. This book draws you right in as if you were there! Didn't put it down!! Highly recommended for young adults or adults!!
Book went above and beyond my expectations.
It draws you into the world created by Maureen and into each characters world with who they are and their experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable

Thoroughly enjoyable. Overlook the genetic impossibilities of the deviants (a voluntary suspension of reality) and focus on the dark and brooding atmosphere, the gritty and believable setting of Haven, the torn and conflicted characters, the intricate and gripping plot. Together, these factors make for an entertaining and engaging read for adults both young and old (and I speak with admiration as a professional writer).

There are vague parallels with "The Wall Around the World" by Theodore Cogswell (1953): youthful characters challenge adults and authority; city management controls citizens, thwarts curiosity and challenge; a wall around the city keeps ideas/people both in and out; things may not, in the end, be quite as they appear. There are enough similarities for me to wonder if McGowan used this story as a background idea for her work (though it's equally possible that she has never heard of it!).

I'm looking forward to the next two in the series, both for themselves as enjoyable novels and to see how far the parallels go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delivers the expected dystopian elements
Reviewed in the United States on 4 November 2012
As a writer of YA dystopian familiar with the genre, Maureen McGowan's Deviants pretty much delivers. In a world ruined by toxic meteor dust, Glory must support her disabled brother on meagre rations doled out by the over-bearing, hypocritically pampered Dome authorities. There are elements of X-men and The Hulk included with the out-lawed Deviants possessive of a range of recognisable super-powers, needed to combat the pseudo-fascist regime, the sadistic Shredders roaming the lands beyond the dome and a murderous father, suddenly resurrected from death after years of absence. Glory is justifiably paranoid with heightened trust-issues, yet Cal her childhood friend now working for the hated authorities proves easier to put faith in than the so-called terrorist Burn, despite the fact the latter endangers himself to rescue her brother from potential exposure with little obvious benefit for himself. Of course, this sets up the customary love triangle.
At times Glory's lack of belief in those obviously working in her favour is annoying, but for the most part the story moves at a good pace and the well-drawn characters face an interesting range of perils. Although many elements seem overly familiar there is a good twist at the end, only vaguely hinted at by foreshadowing. This reminded of 'The Immortal Rules' with beneficial mutations rather than vamipirism. Overall, a series worth following if the usual dystopian inclusions of a powerful heroine, corrupt management, contaminated environment and the potential for revolution and eventual liberty from enslavement are your thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars DEVIANTS
Reviewed in the United States on 16 January 2014
Gosh did I enjoy this book. It reminds me a little of a favored old movie LOGAN'S RUN, but different and stands on its own. Glory a young teenage girl is left to take care of her younger brother in a domed city called Haven. In Haven everything is controlled and rationed. Citizens are taught that on the outside they will die from the dust, or from zombie like creatures called Shredders.

Both Glory and her younger brother are Deviants which are people with special powers or physical anomalies, that make them different from normal people. Deviants will be expunged from Haven which is what happened to Glorys Dad after her mother was killed.

In an effort to save her younger brother who cannot walk, Glory is contacted by those from the outside who finally convince her that they can live and indeed flourish in the outside. Deviants is an interesting story of a young woman beginning the painful awakening to womanhood without the benefit of any older woman to answer her questions.

Truly an incredible read continued in the next book Compliance. While the series is touted as being primarily for the teen market I found it enjoyable and an immersing read. It's true there is no gratuitous sex or clandestine adult scenarios, they were not missed by this reader.
