The Girls From Alcyone Kindle Edition
Sigrid stood in the center of what had once been the Academy grounds on Alcyone. Now, all that remained were the burned and collapsed remnants of the school and dormitories. Smoke still wisped up from the blackened piles of lumber and debris. The stench was raw and acrid, threatening to overwhelm her sensors.
"There's no way Independents did this," Christian said. "It looks like a whole battalion landed here."
Frantic, Sigrid scanned the area again, searching desperately for signs of the girls, but nothing turned up in her sensory modes. She tried calling out with her comlink. If they were in range, they'd pick up the signal. But there was still nothing. Not even the orbital satellites showed any sign of the girls, or survivors for that matter. Whoever had done this had been brutal and thorough.
Sigrid knew she would kill them.
Synopsis:
Sigrid and Suko are two girls from the impoverished and crime-infested streets of 24th century Earth. Sold into slavery to save their families from financial ruin, the girls are forced to live out their lives in service to the Kimura Corporation, a prestigious mercenary clan with a lineage stretching back long before the formation of the Federated Corporations.
Known only to Kimura, the two girls share startling secret—a rare genetic structure not found in tens of millions of other girls.
But when their secret becomes known, Sigrid and Suko quickly find themselves at the center of a struggle for power. Now, hunted by men who would seek to control them, Sigrid and Suko are forced to fight for their own survival, and for the freedom of the girls from Alcyone.

About the author

Cary Caffrey studied at Concordia University in Montreal as well as the University of British Columbia, earning a BA and MFA in Creative Writing. After witnessing the eBook revolution, Cary (a die-hard Indy artist), jumped into ePublishing head first. The Girls from Alcyone was Cary's first novel. It went on to become a best seller on both Amazon and iTunes Science-Fiction charts.
The novel Codename: Night Witch (The Girls from Alcyone III) is Cary's latest release, and is available now exclusively on Amazon.
Cary is now hard at work on two new novels. Rangers of Alcyone (working title), as well as an entirely new, and as yet untitled science-fiction project - something Cary likes to call "The Thing meets Mad Men," a Cold War, scifi-horror-romance chiller.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 June 2012I picked it up initially because it was free, and I was bored. I wasn't expecting much, having read some purely awful free books. Man oh man, was I in for a surprise.
The book is entertaining, with very likeable main characters (Sigrid and Suko specifically), plenty of mystery and intrigue, a gripping plot line, and very very well written action scenes. The relationship between the two main characters is handled sensitively and written very well too (at least in my opinion) and the brief sex scene actually serves a purpose (progressing the relationship) rather than just being thrown in there because hey look lesbians! Laurel K. Hamilton this is not. So I ended up reading until 4am, despite being bone tired I couldn't put it down until I actually nodded off gripping my kindle. Even after I put it down, I went to sleep wondering what was going to happen, and found out as soon as I woke up. The book ends at a fairly good point too, but leaves it wide open for the sequel which so needs to happen.
Give it a read, guys and girls, you won't be disappointed if you enjoy sci-fi, military action, and kickass women. Cary, hurry it up and gimme a sequel! Don't leave us hanging.
Sorry if this is all a bit obscure, I'm trying to avoid spoilers.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 September 2016This is a truly unusual self published book. I found no typos or errors, the story was complex and the characters believable. It was a true joy to read a science fiction trilogy that was true to the likes of Asimov, CJ Cherryh or Brin. I felt the first book was good but the next two were better. Keep up the good work. I hope the author doesn't get pigeon holed as writing lesbian preteen fiction as this is top quality sci-fi. Maybe a few young male characters who aren't evil or foolish would help.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 February 2012The good:
Despite the number of years this story is set over at the beginning, it's fast paced but full-bodied. The characters are enthralling, the technology intriguing and detailed without being overbearing and slowing the story down, and the descriptions vivid. It's also a lot of fun, with some wonderful humour amongst the action. The romance in it is sweet and touching, even in the bedroom scenes. You can't help but empathize with the two main characters, and while the story is complete in its own way, there are threads left hanging for a sequel (which I'm now awaiting impatiently!).
The bad:
About the only flaw in this for me was a couple of instances of head-hopping (something that drives me insane despite the fact I've been guilty of it myself) but not enough that it pulled me out of the story - it just niggled a fraction.
In sum:
This is an exciting, action-packed, well-thought out scifi story with a sweet romance at its heart. Hurry up with the sequel!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 June 2012Well I spent alittle time trying to decide if i enjoyed this book or not, let me explain. Its got some good plot lines and nice elements I haven't come across often in sci-fi but I felt that this book was lacking in some way.
All the main characters are female, mostly 15, and slightly annoying. The only males are not nessesarily powerful figures, mostly mediocre. Im not trying to flame the book, merely pointing out that I find it very hard to remember a single stand out male role. I thought a trick was missed in the fact the girls are young killers but this point is rarley pressed upon. We could of had allsorts of interesting moral dilemmas or character introspective on "lost innocence" and child abuse but this was never used in any powerful way. Neither of these points "kills" the story for me, I just feel that the book has some real punchy potential that is never realised which is why its good for a read but will not "rock my world"
There is one thing that really annoyed me throughout this book; How many times is the main character going to "wink at (insert random character name)" while doing something outrageous? Jokingly I wondered if the main character had a nervous tick.
Good overall, nice filler book between series.

5.0 out of 5 stars SF Romance with a lot of twists and a backstory that takes the trilogy to complete
I've read all three books and I must say it was a very pleasant surprise. We meet our heroines when they are still young and see them grow up to be strong women. The background of this world is expansive (lots of political intirigue and machinations and a debt driven economy) but you can still follow it quite easily and the SF is written with lots of attention to detail without becoming hardcore SF. The characters are believable in their motivations and even the bad guys are understandable but still unlikable. The relationship between the two main characters is very nicely written, in some books if there is romance it sometimes halts the story or even ruins it but for this story its a very important part. If you look up the bad reviews its mostly about the lesbian relationship but that says more to me about the reviewers than the story. The romance is sweet and very well done and without wanting to give spoilers the reunion in the 3rd book was very bittersweet. This story made me buy audible books for the 1st time and Kristin James made an excellent job in bringing the characters to life that I started buying other books she narrated, giving me more excellent stories to discover. So another big thank you to the author for this.

5.0 out of 5 stars If your looking for something different but good, give this a try.
The characters were believable. The relationships blended well into the story. I read it start to finish over a two day period, which means to me it held my complete interest.
The love interest between the two main characters, was nicely done. Love is universal. Who are we as a society to put a defined box around it. Love is that undefinable thing that goes on between two people. When you see a mother helping her child, you know that love is involved, you don't turn away, you accept it, for the beauty it is. You smile and think all is good in this world, it gives you hope. This is also good, the more love, the more hope for society to succeed and survive into the future.
Which is what good science fiction is all about.
Be well

5.0 out of 5 stars Coole Heldin - schön geschrieben

3.0 out of 5 stars Bon début puis trop de Mary Sue
Le livre démarre bien, on est vite emportée par le récit. En plus, une héroïne badass kickass ! Oh Yeahhhh !
Malheureusement, à mesure que le roman avance, on ressent de plus en plus la dimension "Mary Sue" du personnage.
Dommage.
