About the Author
Thomas was born in Bangor, Wales, in 1966, and raised on Anglesey, the island at the northern tip of Wales. He lives in Kent under another name with his wife, the author and journalist, Marnie Summerfield Smith.
It was Stephen King's vampire novel Salem's Lot that fired his ambition to be a writer.
He was a journalist for more than 20 years, working for local, regional, and national papers as a reporter, sub-editor, design editor, sports editor, night editor, and deputy editor.
His first novel, a Welsh-language vampire story, was published in 1996. He's had three novels, two collections of stories, and two non-fiction books published in Welsh. He is also an award-winning playwright.
On April 1, 2008, Snowbooks published his first English-language novel, Maneater. Skarlet, the first book in The Vampire Trinity, followed in 2009. Prey, the sequel to Maneater came out in that year, as well. He is now working on Kardinal, the last part of The Vampire Trinity.
Thomas is represented by Mariam Keen at the Whispering Buffalo Literary Agency.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2023Skarlet was the second Thomas Emson book I've read in recent weeks, following closely behind Iron Bones, which if you haven't read - you probably should! OK, back to Skarlet. I really enjoyed this. A cast of relatable characters who you can't help rooting for. Jake Lawton is gritty, tenacious and not to be messed with, but he's more than just a tough guy out to kick a**e. The story is well plotted with a few cleverly placed flashbacks that give a depth and richness to the overall narrative without being a distraction. The tension and horror drip from the pages ratcheting up to a devastating, blood curdling and satisfying conclusion that leaves you wanting more. As soon as I finished, I immediately went and bought Krimson - book two in the series.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 September 2011Nice book and most enjoyable read.
Unfortunately does not appear to have been proofread before going to print as littered with errors which can get slightly frustrating.
Saying that, I have read it twice, and as long as you can over look the spelling mistakes and grammatical errors, it's great.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 June 2010This is a great novel, the first of a trilogy, and if this is anything to go by then the others will be superb!
Really good story line, starting in 2008 but with flashbacks to just after WW1 and the time of Alexander the Great, all of which add more detail and atmosphere to the narrative.
It's set in the UK (London) which makes a pleasant change and has a good conspiracy thread running through it, it is pacy and does not flag at any point during the story, it kept my attention from page 1 and was riveting enough that I could ignore the few spelling and grammatical mistakes, I could even ignore the technical error with the RPG, and I am usually Mr Picky about these things.
I have not read a vampire novel as good as this and that could keep my attention since I first read 'Salems Lot' years ago!
A great book, I am really looking forward to the next in the series and I am off now to order the authors other available books!
Fantastic - buy it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 April 2009When I first saw this book and read the blurb, I was immediately attracted to it - I do love a vampire tale. Having read it, I have few complaints - whilst well put together (I did love the cover, and Snow Books do these really well - "Mothernight" is a beautiful example), but I was not enamoured of the stubby size - I prefer the larger format, and I think the consequential smaller font of this one made slower-going than was necessary (especially as I do most of my reading before I go to sleep, and this was not helped by a smaller typeface). The characters were pretty solid, and the short chapters did indeed make bite-sized reading easier if you were grabbing a few pages between the ads of an ITV drama - because you'll want to do this, once you get past the first few chapters. The action is pretty non-stop, Jake Lawton (the misunderstood hero) compelling, and the general plot quite believable, even if you don't believe in vampires. I really do recommend this one, and await the next instalment - well done, Thomas Emson!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 May 2013I chose this rating because it is an amazing modern day horror book which will drag you kicking and screaming into a world of drugs, vampires and unusual alliances.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to any horror fan who wants to be shocked by the `what if` this could happen and what would l do in this situation .
Thomas Emson is a refreshing writer who doesn't pull the punches but keeps us grounded with his flawed hero who does what he does because he wants answers.
Read the book, enjoy the journey and suspend your disbelieve.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 March 2018Great book, story flows and lots of characters help build a solid read. Looking forward to reading the next chapter in the trilogy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 November 2016Bored, unimpressed, frustrated. Gave up a third of the way in.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 January 2010Picked this up on the off chance and it was a nice surprise! An interesting re-exploration of the vampire myth (lots of familiar stuff, but some new elements too), weaving in the distribution of illicit tablets as the initial propogation... It was good to read something set in London...felt familiar! The writing is crisp and succinct. Good descriptive style...no holding back on chases, tension and a bit of the necessary horror. I would recommend and also would purposefully navigate towards another book by Emson based upon this.
