Nancy began her writing career a bit differently than most. The first fifty two chapters of Amulet (DragonBlade Series) were written in a tent. Some were written in the front seat of a pick-up truck in the short spurts of the two hour battery life of her laptop.

Following some financial setbacks beyond their control, and the sudden death of her children’s father, Nancy, her husband, and two special needs adult children found themselves without a place to live - for nearly nine months. It was not all doom and gloom, however. One of the fond memories of that time was being adopted by a family of geese. There were three families of geese in the area, and one of these families decided it was their obligation to protect Nancy and her family. The Canada Goose family would not allow any other geese near them, and would chase any bread-seekers away.

Nancy now lives nearly three thousand miles away from there - in a house - with her family. Writing Amulet was definitely a pivotal point that changed their lives, and in many ways the story reflects their own journey.

Nancy is the author of The DragonBlade Series, a different kind of Fantasy/Adventure. She is currently working on Book Three of the DragonBlade Series, as well as having several other projects in the works.

I picked this book up when it was free, and am glad I did. It had a good magic system that was implemented expertly. The plot had many unexpected twists, people constantly changing sides. As a result of this and unusual names for many of the large cast it could be hard to keep track of events. This however detracted little from the plot. Short chapters made this an textbook to pickup for a five minute break... putting it down proved to be considerably harder

I can't wait to read the sequel

Nearly fell out with this book at the beginning as a bit reminiscent of Eragon....but I carried on reading and was glad I did, great read, a few twists. Characters are likeable and everything well described. Ended well, a bit of a cliffhanger but also a finished story. I will read the next book at some time.

I have not read any fantasy books since I read the Wheel of Time series many years ago. Amulet has been one fabulous introduction back into the genre. Nancy Lee Parish has intricately woven all those fairytale fantasies of good versus evil, magic and dragons to create great epic story. It is a great page turner that keeps the reader guessing where the next surprise and twist will come from. Desmond the dragon was easily my favourite. Thoroughly looking forward to the next one in the series.

I downloaded this book as it was free so didn't know what to expect and I'm happy to say I was very pleasantly surprised. It takes a bit to get used to the names and who is who but once into it I just didn't want to put it down. Loved it right to the end and actually downloaded the second one immediately after finishing this one as couldn't wait see what happens next!!!

Really surprised by this one. I downloaded it for free not expecting too much but it kept me guessing all the way through with little twists and turns.
Characters were very likeable, you care what happens and the chapters are really short so you end up bombing through the entire novel really quickly wanting to know more!
Great for fantasy lovers, reccommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Indie Excellence!
Reviewed in Canada on 15 February 2013
Beware this book is simply one of the most addictive books ever made!

Amulet begins as a story about a boy named Tristan, but rapidly evolves to include dozens of memorable heroes including a cool dog, intriguing villains and awesome twists. It’s more about the whole cast rather than one person. It’s not flooded with overly descriptive paragraphs (For example describing the consistency of the brick wall) and it is written simply and in such a way that you will never EVER want to put it down!

Just writing this review makes me want to read it again!

Doing an “epic fantasy” as your first book can be a daunting challenge but I think that she really has come out of the gate running and doesn’t look like she’s slowing down! Amulet is simply one of the best indie books you can get your hands on!!

Until you read the sequel that is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Dragons, dogs and wizards oh my...

The relationships the Ecli have with each other and the Ranarians is quite complex and holds many secrets. As the book unfolds it's epic saga, the reader starts to appreciate the complexities the author has woven into the story. There are many surprises, twists and turns that make Amulet a real page turner. I found it a hard one to put down as I read it over about three days.

I really enjoyed all the characters in this book, but for me the dog Bub was probably the greatest. Bub has a great sense humor, an insatiable appetite and unsuspected powers. I also enjoyed the personalities of the dragons.

I also appreciated that although most sword and sorcery tales end with the big battle scene, the actual final battle between the forces of good and evil was not some drawn out gratuitous apocalyptic narration filling multiple chapters. I often find these epic battles tedious in this genre. There is plenty of action throughout the entire book, sprinkled among the revelations, puzzles and mysteries. What was needed was resolution to the various puzzles and mysteries in the stories of these characters. What is not answered in battle is supplied in the conclusion. Masterfully too!

Great sword and sorcery book with lots of interesting characters. I enjoyed it greatly. I'd recommend the book to anyone who loves this genre as an entertaining and heart warming story with fantastic characters that will surprise you as you learn more about them and their relationships to each other.

2.0 out of 5 stars good story

So first of all i apologize for my writting mistakes, it's not my native language

So first of all its a while since i read the book(not totally through but i plan to do it...)
the story of the book is rather nice there are amulets connected to dragons and a small group with a young hero set out to save there village from a gread evil

it's a story you have read in diffrent kind of ways more or less there are some good new ideas...

but the reason i only give two stars to this book is that also english isnt my motherlanguage i couldn't stand the writting style it kind of stretchs out there are two much dialogs and to less descriptions(i am not into details of a book but i would like some more)

so i give two stars because i didn't like the writtng style, also the story is quite good.
if i dont have anything else to read in the future and have some time i plan on finishing it

4.0 out of 5 stars Gotta love BABY DRAGONS!!!
Reviewed in the United States on 28 May 2013
Yes, I admit it, the book cover drew me in.

It seems that this is the first book in an epic fantasy about Wizards, Elves, Dwarves, and yes, Dragons. I mention Epic in the large sense, as this was a lengthy book. Possibly too long for what appears to be the target audience, as a young reader may not always have the patience to stick with such an extensive story.

An intelligent and funny dog who communicates by telepathy and has his own Dragon was a cute touch. The plot unfolds at a good pace, doling out world building information as needed to keep the reader from becoming confused with too many details at once. The 'Bad' guys don't necessarily stay bad; they can redeem themselves to keep the reader guessing. The book resolves the story nicely, yet teases you at the end in order to make you want to start the next book. And who wouldn't love baby Dragons?

    On the Downside:
Too many characters, without a clearly defined main character. Tristan, a teen character, comes closest to that role--but I just didn't like him all that much. Plot was involved but dragged here and there--some aspects bogged down with too much detail, and yet some situations were presented with too little explanation.

Overall I liked it--3-3/4+ Stars. A good, clean adventure Fantasy for the young and the young at heart, no sexual situations, and only relatively mild violence. Will I read the next book, Tablet of the Sun? Yes.
