4.4 out of 5 stars 2,316 ratings

When story-lover Anna takes over Longhampton's bookshop, it's her dream come true.

And not just because it gets her away from her three rowdy stepchildren and their hyperactive Dalmatian...

Unpacking boxes filled with childhood classics, Anna can't shake the feeling that maybe her own
fairytaleending isn't all that she'd hoped for. But, as the stories of love, adventure, secret gardens, lost dogs, wicked witches and giant peaches breathe new life into the neglected shop, Anna and her customers get swept up in the magic too.

Even Anna's best friend Michelle - who categorically doesn't believe in
true love and handsome princes - isn't immune.

But when secrets from Michelle's own childhood come back to haunt her, and disaster threatens Anna's home, will the
wisdom and charm of the stories in the bookshop help the two friends - and those they love - find their own happy ever afters?

This is the first of Lucy Dillon's books that I have read, although I understand that she has written two previous books set in the same village of Longhampton. You don't need to have read her earlier books to get the full enjoyment out of this one. In all honesty, I didn't realise that there were other books until I went back and researched Lucy Dillon.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book. Although it would be classed as a chick lit, it is so much more than many other similar books in this genre.

This book delves deeply into the relationships between the two main characters, Michelle and Anna. Lucy Dillion gives us a real insight, through the eyes of Anna, into the highs and the more frequent lows of being a step parent. Anna tries so hard to ensure that life runs smoothly for everyone around her that she constantly puts herself and her needs right to the back of the queue. I felt very emotional following Anna through the inevitable downward spiral in her life whilst everyone else continued to be oblivious to her anguish. If anything, Anna was far too nice for her own good and I was pleased to see her stick up for what she wanted, even if it took a long time to get to that point.

I admired Michelle, the other main character. Michelle is a confident, go getting business woman who has turned her life around and she well deserves the success that comes her way. However, right from the start it is made clear that Michelle has created a strictly controlled and well ordered life for herself. This is the only she can block out both the pain and shame she carries with her from her failed marriage to Harvey.

On top of this, throughout the book we are given hints that something terrible happened to Michelle when she was just 18 years old. However, it is only at about 90% into the book that we find out what this incident entailed. From the build up during the book I had expected it to be something far more sinister than it actually was. Once I knew what had happened it felt like a relief as it was clear that it would not stop her from finally finding some well deserved happiness in her life.

What I really liked about this book was that it didn't start out as the classical chick lit tale of damaged girl meets boy, damaged girl rejects boy, followed by long scenes of 'will they or won't they'. Yes, there was a romance in the book but this didn't develop until quite late on and it wasn't at all predictable. I liked how the two characters gradually built a friendship before there was any sign of something more serious starting to develop.

Lucy Dillion did a magnificent job of weaving the two stories of Anna and Michelle into and out of each other. She gave us two very diverse characters from different backgrounds, with values that were poles apart and each had their own set of problems. But at the same time they were more dependent on one another than either of them realised.

I will certainly be reading more books by this Ms Dillon and I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is a fan of intelligently written Chick Lits.

I loved the two other books by Lucy Dillon about this ordinary little town and some of its inhabitants both two legged and four legged. Her characters are very real and make you want to be interested in the twists and turns that occur in their lives. I like her easy and uncomplicated writing style that had me turning the pages to find out how it all ended. Again, I only gave it four stars as I would class it as a light read but it was most enjoyable and I hope to be able to read about more of the residents of Longhampton soon.

I’ve recently discovered Lucy Dillon and am racing through all her books. I love that the characters are not all perfect. There are rows and imperfections and life is messy, just like in the real world. Wives forgive husbands and friends fall out and make up and it’s just so much more relatable than some fiction.
This book didn’t disappoint. Love all the interlinked stories and the different viewpoints.

I am making my way through the Longhampton books and I don’t want them to end! Touching base with characters (dogs included!) from earlier books is a wonderful, especially as it gives a flavour of how we left their story without deflecting from the new one!

What’s not to love about a story based around a book shop!

This story covers so many relationship themes; friendship, new love, marriage ups and down, step-parenting, teenage demands, co-parenting, bossy parents, warped (abusive) love and unconditional love (paw prints on your heart!). It’s so well done, it really covers so much but without feeling rushed or too busy.

Main character Michelle is not the most loveable lady but you do get an understanding of why the self-protective armour is there and you learn to like her. Anna is much softer and she’s someone we’d all like to know and when she finds her voice, I was cheering for on! Somehow it is an unlikely friendship but that’s probably why it works. Opposites attract and all that.

Books are so important in this story and for us bookworms, this is like magic!

The ending is relatively predictable but so very satisfying!

This is the second book I have dead by this author and I will certainly read more. The storylines are always leading into others, which make her books worth a read. This is about the life of a step mother with 3 children to look after, and her husband who had problems expressing himself. Really good read.

To be honest, I got a bit bored of it by the end of the book. It was an ok read but not as good as some other books by her.

Could not put this book down! Finally finished it at 3.05am! Beautifully drawn out characters that you care about, making you want to sit them down & tell them to talk to each other about their pain rather than shutting themselves down! I could have jumped for joy when Michelle finally dealt the winning blow to Harvey! I would love to have a bookshop like that in my own town! The Happy Ever Afters arrive in a manner that are not sickly sweet or in the manner of a X Factor style 'journey' which Chloe could sing about! Would happily recommend.
