I sometimes wonder how many people REALLY read and put stock in prologues - and epilogues, for that matter. I, for one, am finding myself intrigued by these opening and closing chapters of the Sanctuary series and have started to read them back to back, hoping to solve the mystery before it is given to me in the last book of the series.

By the second to last chapter of Defender - first in the Sanctuary series - I was certain I would detest Vara forever. Her arrogance and, at times, childishly demeaning comments are at such odds with the rest of the 'good guys' that I wonder why she is tolerated where she clearly feels more superior. Not that it would stop my reading of the series, but she's really irritated me, always finding the most negative things to say to Cy - one of my favourite flawed heroes of all time. And of course, he seems to be carrying a torch for the 'Ice Princess' who cannot reveal the mysterious title 'Shelas'akur'. Now, at the end of Avenger, I have to admit that I am slowly warming to Vara.

Avenger shows an author who has grown in experience and confidence, his characters are more rounded and the dialogue more flowing. He has created convincing characters - the good guys goodish; the bad guys, well some über-evil at times - and injected a healthy dose of humour into this book. I had, at times, roared with laughter or grunted in indignation and, in a moment of pure frustration, even shouted at Vara. The characters are, mostly, likeable and the newer applicants and members, notably Aisling and Fortin, bring some moments of humour to an otherwise difficult time for those at Sanctuary whose very honour and lives are on the line.

I am an unashamed fan of all of Crane's series and although this is his first series, it is the last I started reading, hence a review years after first publication. I am already knee-deep into 'Champion' and wondering what lies ahead for poor Cyrus.

If you enjoy reading series in this genre, I would definitely recommend the Sanctuary series and strongly advise that you read it in order of publication so as not to miss out on any of the adventures or back story.

This the second book in the Sanctuary Series and continues the story of the Sanctuary Guild. It took me until about a 1/3 of the way through the book to really get into it but then the story pace really took off and I really enjoyed it.
While the "Ghost" continues his mysterious ways and Vara and Cyrus dance the foxtrot of will they / won't they throughout the story I think Fortin ( a new character ) is really hilarious and he really added another depth to the expanding cast of book 2.
Trouble visits the Sanctuary Guild in this book when they are blamed for crimes that they did not commit and they need to clear their name - the adventure begins.
Lots of action, a bit of "almost" romance, lots of suspense and a mixed bag of creatures all working for the greater good -you will be hooked. A really good read.
I am away now to start book 3- The Champion.

I'm not great at writing reviews, so I don't do it very often. I have read all of Mr. Crane's Girl in the box/out of the box series and love them. So I thought I'd try his Sanctuary series. I am so glad I did, because wow! what a fantastic read. Kind of a cross between The Witcher (without the saucy bits) and Lord of the Rings. This book made me laugh, cry, and adrenaline rise to the point of shaking. Well done, Mr Crane. Thank you for the joyride.

These stories get better and better. I read the first and enjoyed it but the second was even more enjoyable. I am thoroughly into the fanstasy genre at the moment and this series of books is one of the best. His characters, especially Cyrus who is the lead character, gain in stature and breath with each novel. There is lots of majic but also a lot of character building so you get to know more about them with each book. If you are a lover of fantasy, especially one with lots of battles, you will love these books. Also it would seem the autjor improves with each book. You should also try his 'Girl in a Box series.

I left a review for the first book saying it was fantastic apart from a "world of Warcraft" game feel to it. After finishing the 1st book it sort of blended in with the story so you didn't notice it as much. So is the 2nd book as good, simple answer yes. Yes and even getting better, the story was more involved and the main characters, already excellent, got so that you just need to know more (especially Cyrus and Vara). I say "main characters" as there are quite a few, but anyone who has read the Malazan books for example, wont have a problem keeping up. Here's to the 3rd!!

This installment kept me reading through the night! The characters live on the page and develop as the book progresses. The ability to wield regeneration spells allows for wilder action in fight scenes but does somewhat dull the trepidation of losing a favourite character. However, I will be starting the next book tonight and will no doubt lose more sleep!

The first book I found irritating as all the characters had so many magical abilities they could do anything and the group of warriors are more like a gung-ho teenage American football team than fighters but I slowly got hooked by the story and the interaction of the characters. Still not great literature but a good story to get involved in. The author does manage to spin the story out and keep the tension going especially between the two main characters - no quick fix solutions here and these two learn their life lessons very slowly. Considering the fierce battle situations they often find themselves in they still seem to find the time between sword swipes to have some strangely long conversations. I could almost see the opposing armies thinking "Time for a rest lads, they're chatting again!"
Hooked enough that I bought books 3 and 4 and I'm hoping there's more to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Series getting better with each book
Reviewed in the United States on 16 August 2016
I'm now through book 5 of the main series as well as the companion (dark elf) books, and so I want to provide some thoughts to someone who might be contemplating trying this series. The 1st book in the series won't give you much hope about the future of the series, but let me tell you that overall it's worth diving into and my review above really speaks to my feelings about the published series as a whole, not just this book. Part of the joy of this series is watching the author slowly become a significantly better and more confident writer.

During the course of that growth the world, the characters, and my love for the series has also grown. It starts out like a typical early 00's MMORPG and grows in depth and subtly with each passing book. I urge you give this series a chance and I hope by book 3 you'll have grown to love it as much I as do.

Book 1: Boring, predictable, mediocre fantasy novel. The first half is particularly bad. 2 of 5 stars
Book 2: Slightly better. The world begins to expand a little in this novel and the characters become a little more 3 dimensional. 3 of 5 stars
Book 3: The world opens up, the main characters begin to have a real voice, and you feel the actual stakes at play within this universe. Most importantly the author finds how to incorporate his trademark snark and sarcasm into these relationships. 4 of 5 stars
Book 4: The series asks questions that involve real more complexity including dealing with death, responsibility for our actions, and the importance of trust in relationships. 4 of 5
Book 4.5 Provides more color and complexity for one of the best characters in the series. 5 of 5
Book 5: I'm hooked. Can't wait to see the path that this story finally takes us down. 5 of 5
Book 5.5 More backstory, more complexity, just wonderful. This is basically Ender's Shadow to book 5's Enders Game. 5 of 5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Dungeon's and Dragonesque
Reviewed in the United States on 24 March 2023
This book started out with an odd jump right into an almost cartoonish Dungeon crawl style but I stuck with it and am now into the third book. I have found myself really interested in the main character and am turning pages to see what happens to him.
I am normally drawn to a much more developed world creation but somehow this just works. It's not for everybody but if you stick with it, you might really enjoy it. Oh, and lots and I mean lots of action!
