If you like Scott Turow's riveting legal thrillers and Lee Child’s nerve racking suspense, you'll love bestselling author Joel Goldman's knockout Lou Mason Thriller, Deadlocked!

Ryan Kowalczyk denied slaughtering a young couple even after his best friend turned against him, sending him to death row. When Lou Mason is hired to prove Ryan's innocence, a killer does whatever it takes to stop Mason. The deeper Mason probes, the greater the danger - until the past and present collide in an explosion of deceit, corruption and murder.

“Lou Mason's best outing...very satisfying and highly recommended." Lee Child, Bestselling Author of the Jack Reacher series.

Joel Goldman writes crime thrillers to die for. He's the Edgar and Shamus nominated author of three riveting thriller series.

Trial lawyer Lou Mason is a powerful, sexy man, more than six feet of hard muscle and once a keen rugby player. He's loyal and principled, both to a fault. His wry, sarcastic sense of humor and knack for top class banter are disarming, sometimes obscuring a recklessly brave spirit. Passionate about justice, he dives into the dark water, taking on cases other lawyers would run away from.

In Jack Davis' world only liars, drunks and guilty people shake uncontrollably. Then he joins their ranks. After 25 years as an FBI Special Agent, Jack is forced to retire because a mysterious movement disorder that makes him shake, sometimes bending him in half, sometimes strangling his speech. The cause and cure are unknown and Jack's condition colors his entire life. So much so that it ends his FBI career. In his new guise of part time private detective, he can't predict when the shakes will start... he just knows they will. Most of the time he just hopes he isn't holding a gun when it happens because crooks and killers don't give anyone a break.

Alex Stone is a Public Defender, devoted to representing people charged with a crime who can't afford a lawyer. More often that not, her clients and cases are lost causes. But the dismal odds only encourage her. Long, lean, and ropy from years of early-morning workouts, she knows only one way to live and one way to try a case: bear down and go all out.

She's determined to give her indigent clients the same measure of justice the rich and well bred receive. That's what everyone, guilty or innocent, highborn or low, deserves, and that's why she became a public defender. That higher calling matters more than whether her clients are guilty or innocent. But when the system fails to deliver justice, she makes certain justice is done.

If you like heroes you can care about, believe in and root for, you'll love Lou Mason, Jack Davis and Alex Stone. If you like crime thrillers with riveting suspense, jaw dropping twists and page-turning action, you'll love Joel Goldman's novels.

Another in the Lou Mason series. I think this is number four, but it makes a fine stand alone read. This time Mason gets involved with a case that occurred more than 15 years previously. The perpetrator has been found guilty and executed, but his mother wants Mason to clear his name.

Mason is a great character: thoughtful, cynical and haunted by the death of his parents when he was a child. There are lots of twists and turns, and there's always another element to the story.

The concept of the lawyer being the falsely accused murderer who solves the crime. As such this could have been a 2 star thriller.

What elevates it is the detail of the court processes and more the secondary characters - who are developed better than in most books of this type.

Deadlocked was truly a not-to-be put down book. There were twists and turns I never saw coming and I read a lot! I couldn't wait to finish it and hated for it to end -- a perfect book. One major problem, and my only complaint, was the editing! Words and sentences were broken off midway, breaking the rhythm of the narrative. I enjoyed the characters and the several plots involved in the story were not difficult to follow. This was my first book by Joel Goldman and I look forward to reading more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great books, entertaining and fun!

When reading or writing reviews for these types of books I think it's best to consider them for what they are.. entertainment, escape, and mental stimulus. For these reasons I'm a great fan of Goldman and his books. Every great series needs a compelling hero and Lou Mason is a satisfying lead. He is sarcastic, resourseful, reckless, and vulnerable. Deadlocked is a book most anyone can enjoy. It's easy reading, Interesting, and keeps you guessing. Some argue Goldman ventures off the plot path too much spending precious page space for details of the city, history, architecture, etc. I find these departures provide good rest stop for the story and give the reader opportunities to slide deeper into the context of the characters.. (the city and scenes that are the backdrop to each story). Others suggest Goldman introduces too many characters in his books but while I agree there can be a lot to follow, I think it's good brain test to keep track of the characters and story. What's best of these books is that you can easily navigate them to enjoy the books as a whole, or just the parts and pieces that compel you. The story alone is always great. Deadlocked has a combination of suspence in the story of the killers, the survivors, and Mason's own personal discoveries about his in parents death. I like that Goldman doesn't always answer every question and is bold enough to force readers to form their own conclusions. This book Mason struggles with the passion of his life and career and a woman he loves. Don't get me wrong g I'm a guy that likes suspence, action, and the gritty hero but I can really handle Mason's charm and sadness, his solitary life, balancing his likeability and sheer frustration with his choices. His friendships are tested, he is conflicted over women, and has love/hate relationships that just work overall. I get that these books are not for everyone, but for me they entertain.. they pull me into imaginary lives and drama that is real enough to keep me in that space for as long as I want to be. Anything can be over analyzed and flaws can be exposed if you look hard enough, but if you just relax and start turning pages I promise it's not difficult to make it to the end.. off to read the next book in this series...
