Blood Bound is the first book in Rachel Vincent's new adult series Unbound. As I enjoyed her The Shifters series, this was a must read for me.

I really enjoyed reading this book. In fact, it only took me a day to devour it. Once I started reading, I could not put this book down. It is a very fast paced adventure, with many twists along the way. The only thing that bothered me a little bit was the dual narrative, and the fact that on a couple of occasions the narrator switched mid-chapter. I really hate when authors do that.

The world of the Unbound series looks like it will be a really interesting place. The characters look like they will be really interesting too. The main character of Blood Bound is Liv - Olivia - is a really interesting character. She's a blood tracker, which means she can use a person's blood to find them within a set distance. Liv is quite independent, a trait that most of Vincent's protagonists seem to share, yet she's not all-powerful. She also has a strong moral core. Cam is also an interesting character. He's a very determined person, and it's very clear what his feelings about Liv are. The secondary characters are well fleshed out, and intriguing - I hope we learn more about them, and see them in later books. The world of Blood Bound is inhabited with people like her who have different and similar "skills" to her. It is interesting to learn about these different "skills" and how they are used - some of the "skills" are really quite ingenious, and I think original.

The overall plot of the book is pretty simple, but there are lots of twists through the narrative which keep it interesting and kept my attention on the pages. There were more than a few twists which I didn't see coming, particularly Liv's final realisation - which was neat, and well thought out. The ending of the book was very, very well done and it left me looking forward to reading the next book in the series Shadow Bound. If you are an Urban Fantasy fan, then this is definitely one book to give a try.

Really liked this... one of my favourite authors.

This kept me on my toes, it has two Narrators, Liv and Cam - it switches between the two and I found myself having to double check the indicators to be sure from whose point of view I was currently hearing the story. Not a criticism, a fact! Which I actually began to enjoy thoroughly once I kept track. An interesting decision by the author to offer the two emotional slants as the book unravels. Well done Rachel.

I did however feel that I was really just beginning to get entirely absorbed in the new extra sensory world when the plot came to quite an abrupt end. Some major events occurred, without the chance for the main character to have any input. A "fait accomplice" I realize to establish the setting for the next books. Frustrating though.

I was expecting good things from this book, I loved the drama/action of Rachel Vincent's first adult series. This did not disappoint. Although the sexual chemistry between Liv and Cam and 6 year abstinence could definitely have been exploited more for this readers enjoyment. This may have been one of the reasons it was slightly shy of the 5 star that I had worked myself up for simply because I needed just a little more to be totally hooked. A solid 4 and half stars - but I can't give that.

I look forward to the second book of course.

In the world there are people who are skilled. There are 'travellers' who can step into a shadow and appear anywhere else and 'trackers' who can find anyone amongst many others. However no government will validate the existence of these skills and therefore there is a world of crime where the police have no jurisdiction and the skilled are fighting each other with no mercy. More importantly amongst the skilled there are 'binders'; people who can secure others into contracts using blood and ultimately taking away there free will. The city is split between two mafia bosses who run the city's underworld with a vicious and unforgiving hand. Many of the skilled work for one of these two and its a job only the quick witted and the ferocious can survive.

Liv is a tracker that uses blood to find people. She swore she would never become bound to any corporation, until the life of someone she loved was threatened. Now she serves Cavazos, one of the mob bosses, and he wants her to find someone that is proving close to impossible to find. If she doesn't find them in the next six months - she belongs to him, and he can do whatever he wants to her. Then Cam, the love of her life, appears on the scene. Six years ago she left him after a prophecy was made predicting that if they were together one of them would murder the other. Now he's back and he wants answers to why she left him and he wants her back for good. With his help, she is asked by an old friend to find her husbands murderer and kill him. She needs to get the job done before Cavazos gets involved and shows her his displeasure. Unfortunately life is a hell of a lot more complicated and Liv is going to have to come up with some quick thinking before they all end up dead.

This is the best series I have started to read in a long time. I loved the characters, I loved the story and the world that has been created. I was hooked as soon as I started and finished the book the same day then bought the next one straight after. There's a lot of action, romance and excitement and I can't wait to read the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, original new paranormal world
Reviewed in the United States on 4 October 2011
Rachel Vincent is well known for her YA Soul Screamers series, but I have been reluctant to give it a go because I'm not big on YA. That's why I was extremely giddy when I heard she was writing a new adult trilogy.

Blood Bound (Unbound #1) was so much more than I expected! Just when I think every paranormal scenario has been done, the Unbound world proves there are still authors out there who are pushing their imagination in the genre. Its paranormal characters, called the "Skilled," live in the regular old human world several decades after their existence is made public--although they are not officially recognized by the government, therefore their work is still more or less kept quiet. The dozen or so Skilled abilities include Seers who can see the future, Binders who can create permanent contracts by blood or word, Travelers who can move from one place to another miles away simply by walking into a shadow, and more.

Olivia "Liv" Warren is a Tracker who can find anyone simply by following the pull of his or her blood. When Anne, a friend from Liv's past asks her to track down and kill her husband's murderer, she has no choice but to carry out Anne's request even though it's the last thing she wants to do, thanks to a childhood Binding that left Liv, Anne, and two others girls bound together by a promise.

Also along for the ride, to Liv's surprise, is Cam Caballero, the love Liv had to leave behind with no explanation six years earlier. Cam, a highly powerful name Tracker, is still reasonably pissed at the way Liv left him, but sees the opportunity to use his own Tracking Skill to help her find the killer, for her to do some explaining and, hopefully, get Liv back for good.

Rachel Vincent did something with this book I have very rarely seen any other author do. Every couple of chapters, the first person POV's are switched between Heroine to Hero. I absolutely LOVE the chance to get into a Hero's head, and Vincent did that beautifully in this book. I know I would have loved Cam even if I didn't get his POV but it made me love him even more.

I thought the concept of "Skilled" humans was original and led to some really great plot twists. Blood Bound is action packed, the romance builds perfectly with the right amount of angst and passion, and I couldn't figure it all out until literally the last page.

At 463 pages, this isn't exactly a short book, but I could have easily read a couple hundred more pages about Liv and Cam. I couldn't put this book down, and that has been something I've rarely found in a book lately. Fans of Rachel Vincent's Shifters series can expect another angsty but satisfying ride between an imperfect hero and heroine who have a lot to go through to get to an HEA.

And here's the thing with this book...while it ends with a possible HEA, it still leaves us with a cliffhanger! So, with a short, three-book series, and each book revolving around a new couple, I'm counting on Book #2, Shadow Bound, to give us a Liv/Cam side story.

I would highly recommend this book to ANY romance reader, whether you're a fan of paranormal or not.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting set up
Reviewed in the United States on 17 September 2011
I am a fan of Rachel Vincent's Werecat series, although I found it frustrating at times. I also enjoy her YA "Soul Screamers" series. So I was excited to know she was releasing a new adult series starting with "Blood Bound". The world is unique and has rules unlike any I've read before so Vincent certainly gets points for her creativity.

The basic story is about Liv who can track people through blood samples. She is forced to help find an old friend's child because of a pact they made with some other friends when they were children. Unfortunately in this world people have special 'skills' and one of their group was a Binder. This physical made a child's promise and unbreakable oath. Liv has to work with her ex-boyfriend Cam to find the child. Cam has a skill also. He can track and find people by their name. There is a reason why the two broke up years before and one of the mysteries readers start off trying to solve is finding out what happened out of the blue to make Liv leave Cam the night he was planning to propose to her.

This world is very inventive in its set up. Besides having groups of people who have these skills, or special powers, the city is also divided into three areas. One is run by Ruben Cavazos and another by Jake Tower. A very small third area is mostly neutral. Ruben and Jake are like mafia bosses, controlling trade and underground activities. Both are dirty as they come. To survive in this world, most people have to side with one of the men or the other. There is much hostility between the two factions. This creates a very unstable, unique world for our characters. There are a tons of rules Cam and Liv have to play by. While this makes things pretty darn interesting it also was confusing to me as the reader for awhile as I came to terms with the logistics at play.

As intriguing as all the action was, and there WAS a lot of action, the inter-play between the characters was what really had me invested in the novel. I don't think any of the characters were good or bad. The characters are all shades of gray. That actually served to make them feel real. The book reads very quickly and I actually NEEDED to find out how things ended up being resolved. Unfortunately the book ends with one heck of a cliffhanger. I think Rachel Vincent's writing has definitely tightened up over the last several years and she has always been excellent with building memorable characters. I recommend this book to urban fantasy lovers but I do caution them to hang on for a rough beginning as Vincent sets up the rules of the world. This wasn't the best book I have ever read but it was very good and I am determined to read the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars For the romance reader
Reviewed in the United States on 13 December 2011
By the end of this story I was hoping that someone would take the initiative and put this couple out of their misery. The stuff they go through just to be together is just painful. When the story begins Liv and Cam have been estranged for 6 years. They start working out their differences after being forced to work together. They actually talk and come to an understanding much to their credit. One of my best moments in the story comes when Cam bares his soul after thinking that Liv is going to leave him again. Aside from those few moments of understanding - this story is one of unrelenting violence. All that binding and compelling and tracking and travelling made me tired. Liv is strong and smart. She can take care of herself. Cam is more than willing but is made weak by being bound to one syndicate or another. Combine that with the type of friends that this couple has, and there's hardly a moment's peace much less any alone time. The all powerful syndicate bosses with their highly unreasonable commands were a complete turnoff. Not even one half-way good guy to even things out a little. The future looks dire. The story line is good, the world building great but you're left with the impression that the author has no love for the main characters and by the end you've hardened your heart too because you don't want to be caught off guard when something really, really bad happens. After awhile I was reading just to see what other horrible thing was going to happen. Romance lovers read at your own risk. I am going to stay away from Book 2.
