After the Rain Kindle Edition

3.6 out of 5 stars 139 ratings

“It’s too late! The rains have come…”
A SMALL TOWN Davenport, Florida. Population 2952. Nothing ever happens here. Or does it? A TERRIBLE SECRET Young. Wealthy. Hedonistic. Single. Adam Williams sits in a bar with a local girl. Then he disappears without trace. THE TRAIL Adam’s brother Craig arrives in town to join the search; but within hours, he is drawn into a dangerous game where people may not be who they seem, and where he no longer knows whom he can trust. It is a deadly game of cat and mouse... But who is the cat and who is the mouse? Praise for ‘After the Rain’… ’Great story.’ Loved this story and two main characters have a brilliant way about them. Very easy reading. Pick it up and read. (Amazon Customer) ’Brilliant Book.’ Well written and gripping from the start. (Doreen Kennett) This is the first book I’ve read by Philip Cox and it won’t be the last. This wasn’t quite what I expected but it turned out to be a really good read. (Mrs A M Denton) ’Good Book.’ Enjoyable book. I liked the main characters and was kept guessing. I thought it was going to go in a different direction and had all sorts of theories as to who did it. I was partly right in the end but way out on some of my ideas. I like books that make me think. I wanted to carry on reading. Good book, will look out for more by this author. (Angie T D) ’Recommended.’ The story is clever, and yes, there’s a twist, and I didn’t see it coming, which for me is the mark of as good story. (A L H) ’Brilliant novel!!!’ I loved this book. It is written in the style I like. It held my attention and was unable to put it down at times. I read this on holiday and my friends had to beg me to tear myself away. I have noted this author for future reference. (Bev Allmanon) ’Wonderful!’ This was the third book I have read of Philip Cox, again it was a great read, excitement till the end and a proper ending, no cliff-hanger. I will be reading as many of this author’s books as I can buy. Great reading. (Kindle Customer)

Philip Cox was born and raised in the UK seaside city of Southend on Sea, which lies forty miles east of London. After graduating from High School, he began a career in UK Banking and Financial Services, and spent the next decades working his way through the ranks, finally becoming a Branch Manager of a major UK bank.

Philip left banking after the birth of his first child to be a stay-at-home father, and it was during this time that, in between changing diapers/nappies, he began to write his first novel, ‘After the Rain’.

Now having written fifteen books, he is based in Hertfordshire, some twenty miles north of London, with his wife, two daughters, and three cats.

During his spare time (what spare time there is between school runs and writing!), Philip enjoys indulging his interest in Model Railroading/Railways.

He is tall and slim, has a few grey hairs, and wishes he could get to the gym more often.

I very much enjoyed After The Rain. It is a fast paced thriller about a missing person. Craig's brother Adam goes missing without a trace in Florida, and the police don't seem to be doing a lot about it. He and a work friend, Ben, go over there to see what they can find out. The story is clever, and yes, there's a twist, and I didn't see it coming, which for me is the mark of a good story.

Based on my enjoyment of this book, I would happily read more from this author. Recommended.

There's a decent plot here - two men seeking a missing brother in Florida, following clues the police seem to be ignoring - with some fun red herrings and moments of danger. But there are times when the pace slows to a crawl, for instance where one set of events are described three times, once as a flashback then twice more from two different characters points of view. There's also a situation close to the resolution of the mystery where with the solution at their finger tips and an outside chance of a happy ending of they get a move on there are several pages of banal conversation and fiddling about with showers etc that made me want to slap the protagonists. FCOL when the bomb counter is ticking down to nuclear Armageddon you don't pause to wall paper the spare bedroom!
However, it was a fun read and it was brilliant to see a story with a gay protagonist that didn't focus on his sexual orientation or turn it into a cliche. Well done for that.

Unfortunately this book didn't grab me. I found the writing repetitive and boring. I got fed up with all the driving instructions, never having been in that area of the States it meant nothing to me whether they turned right or left at the traffic lights. I found the plot to be quite farcical with twists and turns that made no sense to me.
    Sorry.

Whilst on holiday Adam goes missing. His brother and friend go and try to find him, but with all the warnings and near miss attacks, they could be in real danger themselves. Twist and turns along the way this is an enjoyable read.

Hmmm. As the title suggests, the writer kept getting the two main characters mixed up. It spoiled the flow of an otherwise quite interesting storyline, this being that Craig's brother went missing, Craig calls on Ben (workmate) to cry on his shoulder. Ben insists on going with Craig to find his brother. The usual villains and mayhem occur, including Ben falling for a girl who is with the bad guys. All works out in the end. Last few pages are very weak in order to get story finished??

There were also the usual typos and all in all the mistakes have put me off buying any more of his books.

Rather disappointing, not a patch on other Cox novels. The characters were weak, the storyline didn't always feel right. As I said, disappointing.

Would like to have characters developed, more especially interpersonal relationship between main characters. Main story kept readers interest the ending while somewhat surprising left reader wanting more.

A cracking debut novel from a new writer on the scene. The plot moves along at a relentless pace with more twists and turns than a day at Alton Towers. Set against a sultry Floridean location , its a cat and mouse thriller with shades of Hemmingway , with a modern day feel .Five stars for an exciting new british talent.

This story is a fairly good thriller, however it was not exactly what I expected. As an FYI, this part of the blurb has NOTHING to do with the book: "While all this is going on, Craig starts to question the basis of his friendship with Ben. Ben has just come out of a straight relationship: are they in a different league, or is Craig now in with a chance?". This never happens. Sure, Craig's character is gay. However this has absolutely nothing to do with the story in any aspect. This is simply a thriller with a twist that you may or may not figure out.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uh...Not So Much

OK...a couple things...I found this book under LGBT. ONE of the characters happens to be gay. This is a fairly significant part of the story but it shouldnt be. Also..this story takes place in Florida. I live in Florida. The author clearly doesnt. We dont have "basements" in our homes-the water table is too high. Also, everyone knows that SUMMER is our rainy season. Not winter. This is a very marginal detective story. A very slow begining, an interestering middle (except for the glaring errors about Florida-there were many more besides the two mentioned) and a rush to a, by now, predictable end. Although in fairness, I ddint predict until about 4 pages prior, who the bad guy would turn out to be. Good job on that one. Seriously, though. I have read decetive/crime novels for 40 years. Sadly, this was, for a number of reasons, just not a good read. Sorry, Mr. Cox.
