- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2019Hattie is leaving the Navy nursing corps and looking for a place to retire to, she decides on a remote mill with some outbuildings which she wants to convert into long term lets. Set on the shores of an idyllic river she soon makes friends with the local boatmen and one in particular, Joss, ex-army.
There are other people who live nearby and as the story develops so does their story too, as they all become friends, together with the people Hattie lets the cottages to. Each person has found their way to Hattie Mill with a back story, Hattie is the central lynch pin which holds everyone together and helps them solve their problems.
Of course, there's Admiral Jellicoe too, always there for a cuddle!
I loved this book, one which I'd happily read several times over. Some characters appear in future books by this author.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 June 2018Hadn't read any of Marcia Willett's books before but I really enjoyed this. It was very descriptive and the writing classical with great use of the English language that actually made me look up some words to remind myself of their meaning. A good change from chicklit. I felt it was a bit slow in parts but enjoyed the story nonetheless about the lives of various people living on a creek in Devon and had to remember that it was set in the 80's when I felt it seemed a bit old fashioned in its views. Have purchased another by this author so will see if it's written in the same way.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 October 2012I adore all books by Marcia Willett (she also writes as Willa Marsh ). I have slowly collected everything she has ever written and I would thoroughly recommend them to anyone who likes a good read. The characters come to life (and a few are actually real people) and the plots are very carefully worked out and totally believable. Finding the same people again in another book, as background characters makes it feel as if you are reading about people you actually know, old friends... Very clever!
Although, as in real life, there are sad, bad and downright awful patches, the books have a real feel good factor and are a true pleasure to read. Can't recommend them highly enough.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 July 2022I loved the descriptions of the settings, warmed to most of the characters and all in all it provided a very satisfactory read. It's a bit like the TV series Doc Martin where you feel as though you are on holiday! I really enjoyed it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 March 2021A lovely relaxing read. I have several other Marcia Willett books. There were some unexpected plot twists in this too, which made for interest. I would recommend this as a good first book if you haven't read her before. And the setting is glorious, like many of her books.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 October 2018I just couldn't get into this book, I'm afraid I found it a bit boring and gave up after chapter 5. Sorry but not for me.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 August 2018Hatties mill is one of my most favourite books of all time. Marcias books are all fabulous, her insight to life is so wonderful, I call her books my 'comfort blankets' and have read everyone of them over and over, had to get this one on line as I had misplaced my tatty copy, read her, read her, be soothed, be up in arms with the cruel and hard characters who appear in her books, be inspired, and just enjoy as I have, from her very first book to her latest. I've no doubt you have realised just how in love with marcia so books I am!

I just loved the characters in this wonderful story. It was like visiting old friends and I didn’t want to put it down or for the story to come to an end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this book
This book was full of warmth and frendliness. It is not dramatic, or mysterious, in my opinion, just a very pleasant read. I would buy more books from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure delight!
Marcia Willet has the unique talent of drawing you into her
cast of characters. They all come alive, you become part
of their lives, their experiences. You feel you've been
transported and have had a wonderful adventure. There is
not enough praise for Ms. Willet, in my book.
