I normally prefer my zombies on the big screen, but being a zombie fan, I decided to give this a whirl.

The plot is fast paced, from the initial outbreak to how the survivors deal with the problem. The plot itself is gritty and gory in places, which is to be expected of a zombie book.

I found very few of the characters sympathetic. Some of their flaws were too large for me to want to root for them. Although moral ambiguity can be interesting, it would have been nice to see this tempered somewhat. The majority of the characters that I would have liked to see more of, or who I was beginning to root for, got killed off just before they could be truly interesting. With the exception of the guy who loses his entire family.

As far as zombie stories go, this was good, and about what I'd expect. That said, it's pretty much like any zombie survival story from the last 10 years. Predictable, yet entertaining. There are few surprises here, but if you're after a good old gory zombie survival story, you will enjoy this book. I enjoyed it enough that I've brought the next two in the series despite my above criticism. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out!

A nice enough read. Not taxing but also not different from all the other zombie books out there. I skipped quite a bit of it and some of the characters grated. There are too many unneeded sex scenes too. And I didn't understand why it was called "Fire".

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, a strong story line with good characters. Nobody is safe from the consequences of the apocalypse and some seemingly key people don't make it to the end! I have acquired the next in the series and am looking forward to the continuing series.

Yet another well written "unpublished" zombie book. Good storyline, likeable characters and good tension.
I'll certainly read the next book, as I'm interested to see where the story ends up. Enjoy this. Sure it's free :0)

There are lots of zombie novels available, but this is one of the best I have read in a long time, the characters are believable and the story line moves along at a good pace. If you like this type of novel, this is a must read.

Really glad I gave this book a go. Well written, fast paced and with characters you get a real feel for-this book has it all. Initially I worried that there were too many characters to keep straight but the author does a great job of keeping them separate. Away to get the next one :)

It was ok but for a short book it had so many characters in and with the way it ended I'm thinking the second one is going to start where this ones ends.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another quality Zombie novel from the pen of William Esmont...5 Stars
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2011
"Fire (Elements of the Undead)" is the 2nd in a series of Zombie books by author William Esmont. This review was from the Kindle e-book edition which was a 357 Kb download that retails for $2.99. There is also paperback copy which sells for $7.99

SPOILERS (general theme, no specific details revealed)

For some unknown reason a zombie infestation has started in Australia and spread globally. This is the story of several survivors and their quests to not only simply avoid contamination but also to try to form a chain of command to organize the remaining pockets of human survivors.

    END SPOILERS.

    Positive Impressions:
1.) an intriguing story that was skillful written and paced...tales told from within cities, the suburbs, the country and on the oceans. There is a definitive 'creep' factor that has the desired effect of providing the suspenseful atmosphere that invariably leads to those chilling altercations with the undead.

2.) a somewhat different and slow start that initially had me concerned about this book, but then flood gates opened giving the reader a tale with lots of action...almost non-stop.

3.) none of the characters appear sacrosanct...they can injured, infected or killed. Nothing ruins a good tale (especially horror and fantasy) than characterss that are virtually 'untouchable'.

4.) a nice blend of personalities...some are developed more than others, but by and large there is an interesting assortment of people to populate the main roles. Some have small parts to play, other larger...some are out to help their fellow man, while others are out for themselves.

5.) a book that could very easily be a segment (or several segments) for "The Walking Dead" series on AMC. There is just 'that feel' to these stories that would lend themselves to fit perfectly into that particular TV series.

    Conclusion:
A wonderful followup to "Air"...the first book in the 'Elements of the Undead' series.
I really like the author's writing style and the skills he displays in the telling of these tales...the tension and that subtle edginess are maintained throughout. And what more could you ask in any zombie tale.

I look forward to the next installment.

    As it is...easily 5 Stars

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read!
Reviewed in the United States on 25 November 2011
First off, before I picked up this book, I read a few of the bad reviews. One or two readers mention the sex scene at the beginning and how they found it offensive or almost quit reading because of it. The scene is, in fact, quite well done, and certainly not X-rated as one person mentioned. When I read the scene, I was like "That's IT?" :)

It's hilarious to think that the sex scene in question offended these people MORE than buying a book about things that EAT people! I'm reading scenes that are quite intense in the depiction of zombies eating people, and yet that's OKAY to these offended readers? How can a person be okay with violent material but scream X over one exceptionally tame sex scene?

    Come on.

    Really. (Shakes head)

Anyway, as zombie books go, I enjoyed this one. Esmont has a very readable style about him and his action sequences are well done. The characters in here are faced with some intense situations. There are some scenes that are very well presented, with a reasonable amount of gore. (I grew up with Stephen King and Brad McCammon, so I'm desensitized somewhat.) I just picked up the copy of Air, and I'm looking forward to getting into that.

If you enjoy zombie books--this is a fine read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Zombie Novel I've Read This Year
Reviewed in the United States on 10 December 2015
I have had Fire for quite a few years now. Recently, I've been extremely sick, which has given me some extra time to read a lot of my older books in my tbr pile. After reading Fire, I am kicking myself for not reading it sooner. I loved it. In fact, I'm writing this review right after finishing Fire so I can read the second book in the series, Air, immediately.

If you follow me on any social media site, you know I am slightly obsessed with zombies. I've read a lot of zombie books, and watched quite a few zombie themed tv shows and movies. I think that Fire is one of the better zombie books that I have read. In my opinion, it is an accurate description o what would actually happen in a zombie apocalypse. The one thing I loved that William Esmont did is that not only can a zombie infect a person by biting them, but zombie blood is also infectious. That's something that doesn't happen in a lot of zombie stories, but I feel like it would happen in real life.

Esmont also creates some very complex characters that you just want to root for (or love to hate in one particular character's case). Even though there are several different points of view, all of the characters come together in a way that is brilliant. Also, one of the characters has a particularly nasty past, but once the zombie apocalypse happens, that doesn't matter anymore. I believe that's how it should be. My favorite character is Megan. She's been through hell and back, but she doesn't let it get to her. I can't wait to see what she does in the future.

I loved Fire by William Esmont. It's one of my favorite zombie books that I've read this year. I think that Esmont has a great future ahead of him writing zombie/survival novels. I can't wait to see where he takes the story next. I recommend this series for fans who like The Walking Dead, with more realism. I also recommend it for people who like survival stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typical apocalyse plot
Reviewed in Canada on 20 November 2013
Megan works for a Nevada brothel. She flees for her life when the dead turn.

The book then introduces a number of characters who have their own harrowing experiences. They meet on the road. Some bond while others become a danger.

In this first book, the conflict produces casualties. At the end of the book, Megan assumes a leadership role and tries to prepare the survivors for the future struggle.

IMO, the characterizations were not strong enough. Not a particularly convincing account of the apocalypse.
