- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2012So, the lesson for today is that when your book blogger friends tell you that a book is OMGFANTASTICYOUNEEDTOREADITLIKENOW, you really should listen. Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini is full of Greek tragedy and forbidden love and as such, this book had my name written all over it from the start. I knew I'd love it but I'd put off reading it for silly yet totally tangible reasons like "if it really is THAT good, I'll have to wait FOREVER for the sequel" and that kind of nonsense because y'know, I'm not patient when it comes to books I love. Thankfully, having waited this long and totally fallen in love with the series, I only have until July now to wait for Dreamless and I cannot wait!
I'm going to start by talking about the book cover. I have to say that whilst I really like the UK cover, as a major hardback fan I've got to go with the beautiful US cover that reminds me very much of the setting in the book. I loved the coastal vibe and sleepy seaside town images that I got from the book. But aside from the setting, it was the exciting plot and the amazing characters that had me hooked. I'm deliberately trying not to say much about the plot as I feel like anything I could say would be a potential spoiler however, I will say that Helen doesn't know who she is and neither does anyone else really until the Delos family waltz into town and awakens something inside her. It's all systems go from there on in.
Helen is essentially at the centre of the story and my favourite thing about her is that she is a really decent person and that comes across in the book. This fact alone endeared her to me although I did like the bond she shares with her best friend Claire AKA Giggles. Speaking of Claire, I did so enjoy the tension between her and Jason and I also have high hopes for Matt and Ariadne. Matchmaking is such fun ;)
Ok, let's talk about Lucas. HELLO. I'm totally adding him to my list of literary boyfriends as he is just lovely. My favourite scenes in the book were between Lucas and Helen - specifically when they crashed into each other and the bed scene (it's totally innocent, I swear). I also loved it when Lucas insisted on staying on the roof but then came down when he changed his mind. I have to put this out there and say that I would die to see that scene from Lucas's point of view, maybe as an extra *sends magical vibes out to Josephine*. One of the things that makes this book different from other YA novels is that rather than love at first sight, it's definitely hate at first sight for Helen and Lucas and that makes for a very interesting and entertaining dynamic.
Now, I can't talk about guys and not admit to having a soft spot for Hector too and I could not help but picture Kellan Lutz (Emmett from Twilight) in the role. With those muscles? There's nothing wrong with that folks!
Besides the awesome characters, another favourite thing about the book was the family element which is something I enjoyed in books like Finding Sky by Joss Stirling. I don't come from a huge family and so when I see strong family bonds, brothers and sisters having each other's backs, I love it.
Starcrossed was a fantastic read and is an example of how Greek mythology SHOULD be taught in schools. None of this stuffy textbook crap but amazing and highly entertaining YA novels that rock your Grecian socks off. And, even though the book is over 400 pages, I can honestly say that I didn't even notice and even further, I never wanted it to end. That's writing skill right there, my friends. I really do feel like Josephine Angelini has cast a spell over me and seriously, I'm not sure what I wouldn't do to get hold of a copy of the sequel right now.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 June 2012This was without question one of my top 5 best books from last summer. I could not detach myself from my kindle for the whole day (much to the exasperation of my mother) until I had finished it... and re-read my favourite parts.
Josephine Angelini's intricate series of twists had me with my mouth open 90% of the time, to the point that my mother started teasing me that I would catch a fly if I kept it up. I argued that seeing as she's a slower reader than I am and that her reaction would be exactly the same as mine, she would be catching a lot more!
I like to think I'm fairly good at guessing or having some notion of the twists to come, but Josephine Angelini had me completely off track with a new and better unexpected twist every time!
This book started as most YA do, girl meets boy, girl and boy can't stand each other and yet they want to. Or at least that's what I'd thought. In actual fact the moment Helen met Lucas everything spiralled out of control and out of what I could have ever imagined.
With ancient households, curses, grudges, magic, myths and the meddlesome presence of gods, Starcrossed was a torturing page turner that I could not unglue myself from and couldn't read fast enough.
Josephine Angelini's style of writing was superb and perfectly matched the tale she told. Speeding, slowing down, soothing and relaxing, quick and witty everything was in sync with the scene at hand. But no matter how she adapted to the story, I did not. My steady reading pace only increased as the twists became even more unexpected and breathtaking.
When I reached the end I'm fairly certain I unleashed a short string of not very lady like words (my mother was not impressed and feels she may have slightly failed my upbringing). When you read this book I assure you, you will feel no different. Starcrossed ended far too soon for my liking. I'm pretty sure I thumped my ipad too and that it came very close to flying into the sea (I was lying on the beach reading). I desperately wanted more but there was none to be had sadly. I have patiently and torturadely awaited for the sequel Dreamless to be released and at last we are almost there!
If you liked this I would recommend reading the series The Goddess Chronicles by Aimee Carter where you will be able to dive into more myths and gods. If on the other hand your looking for another good read but a different paranormal setting they I would suggest: the Die For Me series by Amy Plum, Finding Sky by Joss Stirling, the Existence series by Abbi Glines and The Premonition series by Amy A. Bartol

5.0 out of 5 stars "Une lecture qui procure beaucoup de plaisir à la découvrir."
Haaaa cette lecture... Quel plaisir !
Pourquoi ?

Starcrossed
(Göttlich verdammt)
'Awakening' Band I
Josephine Angelini
Vorsicht die Halbgötter kommen - Suchtgefahr!!!
When shy, awkward Helen Hamilton sees Lucas Delos for the first time she thinks two things: the first, that he is the most ridiculously beautiful boy she has seen in her life; the second, that she wants to kill him with her bare hands. With an ancient curse making them loathe one another, Lucas and Helen have to keep their distance. But sometimes love is stronger than hate, and not even the gods themselves can prevent what will happen ...
"One of the most cinematic books I've ever read. Dramatic and intense! I can't tell you how many times I gasped while reading this book. Starcrossed plays out like a movie in your head."--Sophie Jordan, author of FIRELIGHT
Cover:
Ich bin deeply in love with the Delos-Clan. YES!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Starcrossed is breath taking!!
Book description
How do you defy destiny?
Helen Hamilton has spent her entire sixteen years trying to hide how different she is--no easy task on an island as small and sheltered as Nantucket. And it's getting harder. Nightmares of a desperate desert journey have Helen waking parched, only to find her sheets damaged by dirt and dust. At school she's haunted by hallucinations of three women weeping tears of blood . . . and when Helen first crosses paths with Lucas Delos, she has no way of knowing they're destined to play the leading roles in a tragedy the Fates insist on repeating throughout history.
As Helen unlocks the secrets of her ancestry, she realizes that some myths are more than just legend. But even demigod powers might not be enough to defy the forces that are both drawing her and Lucas together--and trying to tear them apart.
When I came upon this book description on Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini I knew I just had to read it!! I am a big fan of Greek mythology and was really excited with what this book had to offer. I will admit I was a little nervous to start reading because I really didn't want to be let down. Let me say Josephine Angelini was breath taking. She did Greek mythology with a twist that made it original and enticing. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves Greek mythology it will not disappoint!!!! I loved many aspecs to this novel and really connected with then two main characters. The author really sets you into their world that I actually felt their tension, anger, hatred, love, etc...
Main characters and even supporting characters a wonderfully written.
Helen Hamilton MC/ heroine: I love her character!!!! She is at the beginning of the story awkward and scared of being noticed. She is sweet and show no hatred towards anyone. As the story progresses though you get to see her develop and come to terms with her new found knowledge of who she is.
Lucas Delos MC/Love interest: Is gorgeous and undeniably sweet yet dangerous at the same time. I feel he was likable at the beginning of the novel but as the story progresses you come to love him. He undeniably courages, honorable, and loyal. He is what I think any girl would want as a love interest.
What I liked about this novel
The Greek mythology and how fantastically well written it was. I felt that the twist that were put into it made it that more interesting.
Helen and Lucas love connection it felt real. It wasn't like many YA books that it is instant love attraction were she cant stop professing her love to him and vice versa. It had that graceful sweep of it just feels right, real kind of thing that fit oh so well with their situation.
The supporting characters and how they complemented the main characters fantastically. I loved Claire!!!! She's so hard headed determined, smart, and blunt that you can't help but love her!! She fit perfectly as Helena BFF!!! They are so different that they complement each other so well. Then there are the Delos kids!!! They are all such a great variety of talents, characteristics, and love for Helen. Some don't see it right away but they do all love Helen. My favortie out of the Delos kids would have to be Hector!!! He literally would make anyone **swoon**! Not just his looks but his attitude and his fierceness makes you not help but fall in love with him.
I liked that the families were in on the storyline. In a lot of YA novels it's like the heroine is all alone or the parents are way to oblivious or just to consumed with themselves to care about their children. I loved how the Delos family were constantly around helping and working together. I also felt that Josephine Angelini did a great job making Helen and her fathers relationship feel strong yet not to overbearing or fake.
Twist and turns that kept me turning the pages and staying up till wee hours of the night finishing up this novel. Loved how just when you thought they could be together "BAM" your hit with twist!!!!
That there is still more to come!!!!! I already pre ordered my copy of Dreamless!!!! The sequel to this brilliant breath taking debut novel in the saga.
What I didn't like about this book
Absolutely nothing! I felt that is book was evything I thought it would be and then some.
With all that said I highly recommend this book to anyone over the age 13 that loves books about Greek mythology with romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would recommend this book to everyone who like this gendre
I started this book knowing that I woudn't have a lot of time to read. With kids at home, time to myself is rare, especially with a newborn. But, as soon as a read the first chapter, I knew I was about to have many nights with little sleep, and not beacause of my kids...
The story in itself is enticing... The greek mithology is not used enough in books for my taste. The caracters are believable and even tough they are not technically "human", I still could relate.
I would recommend this book to everyone who like this gendre!

Awesome
