Travelling with Pomegranates Kindle Edition

3.8 out of 5 stars 1,236 ratings

TRAVELLING WITH POMEGRANATES is a touching and perceptive memoir about mothers and daughters that will resonate with women of all ages. From Sue Monk Kidd, the New York Times bestselling author of THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES and THE INVENTION OF WINGS, and her daughter Ann Kidd Taylor.

Sue Monk Kidd and her daughter Ann chronicle their travels together at a time when each had reached an important turning point in her life. What emerged was a quest for Ann and Sue to redefine themselves and also rediscover one other. Against the backdrop of the sacred sites of Greece, Turkey and France, Sue grapples with the problem of how to expand her vision of swarming bees into the novel that she feels compelled to write, whilst newly raduated Ann ponders the classic question of what to do with her life.

A beautifully constructed book. Any woman going through or having been through the disconcerting time of change and being fortunate enough to have a close relationship with their own daughter will relate to this book . It makes one analyse one's own relationship and think about it too. Those very precious moments we share in our lives. For a book to achieve that in its reader highlights how special it is.

I loved Sue Monk Kidd’s first book, Life of Bees, so wanted to read more of her work not expecting this to be part travelogue and part memoir. It’s an interesting book with each chapter written alternatively by mother and daughter, detailing their journeys through Europe and their individual life adjustments. As a mother and grandmother I could relate to Monk Kidds coming to terms to her older age and what this means.

I love this author and, though I started out enthusiastically an though some things resonate, being a mother of a grown daughter, began to flag after a while - a bit too 'navel gazing' for my taste....

I enjoyed this book immensely and have passed it on to others and ordered other Monk Kidd books. I've enjoyed all her novels and maybe even more The dance of the dissident daughter. She is a profoundly spiritual writer as well as being profoundly human and writes with incredible detail and precision about her transition from patriarchal to matriarchal being, most especially in the dance of the dissident daughter. I highly recommend Sue Monk Kidd as an author.

I read this book straight after reading The Dissident Daughter. Another journey which I connected to. Helps one see the mother, daughter part of the psyche and lets you know that even if you have pain with those relationships, consciously or not, you can connect on a deeper level. The Goddess moves in strange ways and these two books helped me through a difficult phase in my life.
You will want to visit the beautifully described sacred places that Kidd and her Daughter visit. Take this and ' The Dissident Daughter ' on your journey.

Love Sue Monk Kidd's writing style but could not get into this book at all. Felt quite depressed by it to be honest and subsequently gave up one quarter way through. I hate to leave a book unfinished but for me this did not grip me from the first page....

5.0 out of 5 stars Sue Monk Kidd and Ann Kidd Taylor travelling with Pomegranates
Reviewed in Canada on 2 May 2020
This was a compelling read for me. The journey together and apart of these two women, a mother and daughter, was a read that engaged me immediately. The parallels between Sue and her mother’s relationship got me thinking very much about my own way mother and my interactions as I was a young wife and mother. I was incredibly touched by Sue’s insights about the Old Woman, and how each of us need to make our peace and embrace that part of our life’s journey.

I’d recommend this book highly to all women, regardless of their age.

I actually expected some kind of novel or narration. It was interesting to read about the difficulties and probling solving between mother and daughter but a bit hard to follow. What I really liked was the mercy and acceptence Anne showed towards herself in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars For woman who are working on themselves at a very deep level
Reviewed in the United States on 7 February 2010
This is an important book for women doing deeper work on themselves. Sensitive and intuitive it celebrates our roots and our emotional journey being a mother and a daughter. The feminine aspect in our world has been so suppressed within our patriarchal society.
I wish I had the opportunity to do something like this with my own mother who is now 85years old.. Unfortunately she came from a generation where this kind of inner work was unavailable (except for a few people like Marion Woodman etc.)
My hope is that when my 17 year old daughter grows up more she and I will have an opportunity to connect with the kind of information that is expressed in this book and have some wonderful conversations.
I carried her over the hills of Crete in a baby carrier on my back when she was 8 months old. Her recent love of Greece comes from the romance and scenery in the movie Mama Mia and she has now states she wants to go to Greece.Hopefully this is a good sign for the future.
I wish to thank the authors for this book as I found them courageous in writing a book many woman would not understand and would criticize. The mantra I hear here is 'Be Yourself' 'Be Yourself'. Woman have not been themselves for a long long time. We have been too busy fitting in and pleasing others. We are slowly waking up and we have many more pioneer woman going in this direction of feminine freedom. I highly recommend you view Eve Ensler's video on Ted about the 'girl cell'. [...].
There is a very big underground (rising now) movement on the feminine re emerging into our society.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nicht mal als "Strandliteratur" geeignet
Reviewed in Germany on 15 August 2017
Klares NEIN!
