Forty-Four (44 series Book 1) Kindle Edition
Last year after falling through the ice, seventeen-year-old Abby Craig woke up from death.
But she woke into a world she barely recognizes. She can’t see colors, memories have been erased, and her friends all hate her. And then there’s Jesse, who she loves, but who refuses to forgive her the one mistake she made long ago.
Just when she thinks it can’t get any worse, the visions begin. In them, she sees a faceless serial killer roaming the streets. While the police believe that there have been a lot of accidents in town lately, Abby knows differently. And she soon realizes that it’s up to her to find him.
But to stop him, she’ll have to confront more than just the killer. She’ll have to face something else that was lost in those dark waters. The truth.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 January 2013Brilliantly written.
Not too long but has got everything packed in the small space.
Loved the interaction between Abby and Jesse and the Dr's Mortimer were superb. Not going to give anything away. Suffice it to say that if you like a good mysterious intrigue than you will love this. I have bought every other book in the series and have not been disappointed in any of them. Excellent stuff!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 April 2013I downloaded this book for free as part of my search for new authors, not realising that it was teen fiction. However even as an adult I enjoyed the book, it was well written with a well paced plot with well rounded characters. The story leaves it open for a sequel, well wroth a read, The Dead Zone for teenagers, well worth a read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 March 2012This was the first free book I downloaded on my Kindle so didn't really know what to expect. I am happy to say that I was pleasantly surprised!! It was really easy to get into and was a great story with a surprising twist in the end. The only criticism I have is that I wish there was a little more to it, such as having a bit more depth and detail in the story and a little longer. I only say this as i enjoyed it and feel that it ended too soon and could have happily read more. I did find the cover a bit freaky so dont let this put you off!!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 January 2013I hadn't heard of this book before but the synopsis caught my interest. It's quite short but was really easy to read. I wasn't expecting the ending and I'm a little disappointed, hopefully it will be made better in the next book, cryptic I know but I can't give even a little hint.
A good read and a change to paranormal books I normally read. I'll be reading the next ones.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 27 October 2024Nice little quick read. Well written with no flirty paragraphs just to the point making this a good quick read.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2012I didn't know quite what to expect from 44. It's a Kindle Indie and it's free. These usually go one of two ways. That and I'm about twenty years beyond the audience bracket.
What a little gem this is. Well written, strong storyline, relatable characters even to someone who's only a teen in her head these days. Sinclair layers the plot up nicely and in the best possible way, just when you think the story has all but ended, there's more and with a twist that made me smile because it wasn't the one I expected.
44 reads very quickly, written in the first person, and maintains the voice of the heroine comfortably throughout. It keeps pace and doesn't run into any dull moments where you might lose interest.
Whatever your age you'll enjoy 44. Perhaps more so if you're female since the main driving characters are female and realistically written females at that. You don't need to suspend disbelief too far either.
I'm adding Jools Sinclair to my list of authors to watch out for. 44 book one augurs very well indeed.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 May 201244 was - perhaps predictably at just 158 pages - thin. This was a book which read more like a novella or even a lengthy short story. However, it wasn't just the word count that made this seem a little on the scrawny side. The story was thin. The dialogue was emaciated. The premise was frail.
This book read a lot like a first draft. I felt it really needed someone to go through it and point out the passages which needed more description, less dialogue and a tad less cheese. Some of Abby's talk about "visions" was painful and one awkward scene between her and Jesse, (the boy she loves) actually made me strongly consider giving up on this book altogether.
I know they say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but I should have trusted my instincts on this one. Seriously, that cover is dreadful.
My favourite thing about this book was the idea that after being technically dead for 44 minutes, when Abby was revived she came back not-quite-whole. I remember reading somewhere that the brain becomes permanently damaged after just minutes of death... When Abby comes back, there is evidence of this damage. I loved that she could only see in black and white and that she had developed a taste for old movies as a result. This was one of the few truly creative and original ideas of the book.
Other than the above gem, however, there was little to recommend this short read other than the fact it was free. I'm gonna have to be stingy with my stars, I'm afraid.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 21 July 2015I picked this book up after looking around the free book offerings a number of years ago and the premise sounded like something interesting and different so I decided it would be well worth trying out and I am delighted that I did as this is one of my favourite books I have read in many years.
The premise is about Abby Craig who died but came back and since she has come back things don't quite seem right. The visions that begin to haunt her are a concern but are they simply due to her accident or did that just awaken something in her?
This book is the first in a series of books and I am delighted that I started the series as I have loved each book so recommend reading this so you have can fall in love with the series like I have done.

5.0 out of 5 stars 44
Recommended by a friend, I took a look and was hooked. This is a really gripping, can't put down book.

1.0 out of 5 stars It was fine up until the ending
It was fine up until the ending. You know when authors do one of those 'it was all a dream' or 'i;ve been dead the entire time' or 'I've been in a coma.' or 'I'm alive but all my friends are dead' yeah its one of those kind of endings. Its a vaguely acceptable book that is good if your looking for an easy, quick read. However the ending is absoluetly s***ty and made me so annoyed so I won't be reading any other books in this series which is why it gets 1 star.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read
Besides the main characters issues moving the story forward, many of the other characters had issues that too moved the story forward in a fast paced and fun way. I like when many of the other characters in a story have complex problems like this story that not only allow the characters themselves grow, but too help the main character grow too.
I had to keep guessing who the `bad guy' was, it is funny when you guess right at one point and then change, because something else was there and the `something else' that threw you off was essential to story's plot. I most enjoyed the `seemingly' small characters that were not so small characters. I applaud the author on their skill with characters and fitting them nice into an awesome plot. Many books I have read small characters get introduced then nothing more comes of them, I was pleased when this story made me think the way it did.
The ending was both sad and satisfying at the same time. I do not want to say more than that for fear of ruining the story.
This story moves quickly from the first paragraph to the last I will read this one again just to enjoy what I may have missed the first time reading it. Maybe this next time I will not stay up until the late hours trying to finish it.
My favorite character is Jesse I like the way he is written and the importance of his part in the plot to help and guide Abby.
I could definitely see this series made into a movie I would really like that. However, what I did do is contact Audible.com and requested Audible contact the publishing company to see if they were willing to turn this into an audio book, I would enjoy reading while listening.
Hope this review is not too awful, I am just too fearful of ruining a story for anyone, and this one is too good to ruin for anyone.

This story started off good and I was excited to sink into a good murder mystery. However, it wasn't long before the writer lost steam or interest. Instead of leading up to reveals, she'd just blurt them out. There were some irrelevant characters that may appear in future books, but as a standalone had no purpose. I guessed the big surprise in the end but then again I was looking for it as I knew there was one, otherwise would never have guessed. However, the ending fell flat which really disappointed me. Instead of shocking the reader, she just told us the big surprise. Very disappointing. Was hoping for more of a huge bang. The book also lacked emotion which made it hard to really connect with the characters or the story. With lots of emotion and more plotting, this book would be amazing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very well done Jools Sinclair
** spoiler alert **
WOW, what an amazingly good book! I am now kicking myself for not reading this book sooner, I purchased this eBook nearly 2 years ago. The author seemed to either have personal experience with near death/dead experience, knows someone who has, or she has done an extensive amount of research on the topic. I greatly enjoyed reading this book and felt so emotionally connected I started to cry towards the end. The ending was surprisingly fulfilling and did not feel that it was a cliff hanger even though there is more to the story.
It is very sad what Abby has gone through, coming back to life after dying from crashing into the ice, not being able to see colors, and having horrible nightmares of a serial killer roaming the streets. She has a hard time fitting in in school, she can't play her beloved soccer anymore due to lack of coordination from the accident. Sheesh can this poor girl get a break for her never-ending hell? Oh wait no she can't, it gets worse. The doctor who thought that he had brought her back to life has a psycho brother that works in a pharmaceutical business for cancer drugs. This brother is actually somehow the one who was able to bring Abby back to life with some weird serum.
Abby's sister is a news reporter and and has been covering the series of weird deaths going on around town; and she just knows that they seem like suicides but she doesn't think so. Abby's nightmares are related to the "suicides" that her sister is covering and helps her find the murderer. In these nightmares Abby is able to pick up the negative energy that the serial killer has. When Abby and her sister are able to track down the killer they alert the cops and the go to confront him. They successfully confront the killer but he escapes before the cops get there and escapes. But before he makes his hasty get-away he tells Abby that he will be returning for his creating.
As aforementioned can't this poor girl get a break?
