Sea of Shadows (USS Towers Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 4,033 ratings

"Here is a writer at the top of his game. The result is a brilliant techno-thriller, the kind a young Clancy would be proud to call his own." -- HOMER HICKAM, Bestselling author of 'Rocket Boys'

A minor accident at a German nuclear power plant, a Biological Warfare attack on the British Embassy in Washington, DC, and a secret arms deal combine to drive a trusted NATO Ally into an illegal alliance with a rogue Middle Eastern state. With the world hovering on the brink of war, a handful of U.S. Navy warships must track down and destroy a wolfpack of state-of-the-art submarines.

Their enemy is skilled in deception, and incredibly lethal. Out-gunned, out-maneuvered, and out-thought, the U.S. Navy crews must throw the rulebook out the window, and become every bit as devious and deadly as their enemy. If they fail, the consequences are unthinkable...

"A timeless warrior epic. Jeff Edwards spins a stunning and irresistibly-believable tale of savage modern naval combat." -- JOE BUFF, Bestselling author of 'Seas of Crisis,' and 'Crush Depth'

"...fast and lethal. I read it in one sitting." -- PAUL L. SANDBERG, Producer of 'The Bourne Supremacy,' and 'The Bourne Ultimatum'

"... as close as you can get to naval surface combat without being shot at. Jeff Edwards has penned a fast, no-holds-barred thriller that never lets up. Highly recommended." -- JACK DuBRUL, Bestselling author of 'The Silent Sea,' and 'Havoc'

A DIFFERENT KIND OF MILITARY THRILLER...

More often than not, military fiction portrays heroes as larger-than-life characters with washboard abs, amazing technical capabilities, and combat skills that border on the supernatural. In nearly two and a half decades of active duty, I never met anyone like that.

Instead, I saw a different kind of hero. I saw ordinary men and women who worked together to accomplish extraordinary things. Most of them weren’t tall and blindingly attractive. Their only superpowers were cooperation, dedication, and skill born of training, experience, and personal effort.

Faced with an imperfect system, they didn’t abandon military discipline, or put themselves outside of the chain of command. They figured out how to accomplish the mission despite unclear orders, faulty equipment, and rules of engagement that often made their jobs many times harder than necessary.

I’m no longer surrounded by these unacknowledged heroes on a daily basis, but they’re still out there. They’re still doing the job every second of every day, often in places you’ve never heard of, under conditions that most people can scarcely imagine. Week after week, year after year, they risk their lives for a citizenry that rarely recognizes or appreciates their sacrifices.

These are the quiet warriors. The ones who never seem to make it onto the movie screen or the bestseller list. They’re not products of the ancient hero formula. They’re not flashy. Most of them don’t have biceps of steel. They’re not imbued with astonishing abilities. They’re the real thing.

When I set out to start writing novels about the military, I decided to acknowledge and celebrate the kind of collective heroism that actually keeps this country safe and strong. I promised myself that the men and women who populate my stories wouldn’t look or act like Tom Cruise or Angelina Jolie.

I’m doing my best to keep that promise. When you open one of my books, the heroes you find will look a lot like your daughter, or your nephew, or that twenty-something kid standing in front of you in the supermarket checkout line. And if you happen to wear the uniform yourself, some of my heroes probably look quite a bit like you.

As a fan of Tom Clancy at his height, I'm always keen to find a good techno military/political thriller along the lines of "Sea of Shadows".

First off, let me say that the overriding premise of the book is somewhat unbelievable. However, I would also say that it didn't take much effort to get over that disbelief and get stuck into what turned out to be a very well written and completely absorbing read.

The story-line itself revolves around a battle between [predominantly] US Navy forces and submarines from a NATO ally gone rogue.

The author's own naval experiences shine through and his subject knowledge is obvious. There is a fair bit of detail but it doesn't get in the way of the story. His characters are generally well written and believable.

I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be looking for other books by the same author.

First book in the USS Towers series. The description of the weapons and how they're used are brilliant. Sometimes I found myself reading so fast to see what comes next, that I missed small important bits and had to go back and re-read them. Great action and believable content - will be getting the others in the series.

At the core of ‘Sea of Shadows’ is a far-fetched story of those nasty Germans seeming to be starting another World War. Facing economic ruin Germany has made an illegal arms deal with a rogue (fictitious) state in the Middle East, and for good measure the British Embassy in Washington DC has been attacked by deadly nerve agents, plus there is an attack on British warships, and amidst threatening behaviour the American is manoeuvring to seek a political solution that limits conflict to a sea battle in the Gulf that pits US destroyers and frigates against German submarines. Phew!!

A massive problem for the USA is that they share doctrines and procedures with Germany as NATO allies. As the Germans appear to know what Americans are to do next it is vital that the Americans adopt new strategies and courses of action. This allows author Jeff Edwards to build suspense, but also he draws on his own career as a US Navy submariner. Narrative inevitably becomes more and more technical and the widespread use of acronyms makes for a difficult read. This is interspersed with information on the development of torpedoes and their impact on the history of war and adds to appeal of ‘Sea of Shadows’.

The story is full of action which shines through as gripping and compelling, but for me it is just too far-fetched to be regarded as anything more than average – hence 3-star rating. Sorry – ‘cos I couldn’t put it down and I enjoyed it.

A totally gripping novel of modern naval warfare. It's the sort of book where you just want to keep turning the pages. Well written, characters you want to engage with. Excellent.

I have to admit that I found this book slow to start but it's well worth sticking with it. The further you get into it the more interesting it becomes. I would say this is definitely a book for naval warfare officianados with all the naval jargon but this is also what adds to the realism. Towards the end I just could not put it down. I was constantly reminded of the excellent Robert Mitchum movie The Enemy Below , about sub hunting in WW2. If you enjoyed this movie I think you'd enjoy this book.
The only thing I found odd was the inclusion of a history of the torpedo and eventually I ended up skipping these chapters to get back to the story.
But all in all a thoroughly enjoyable read, highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Packend: was für Technikfreaks und casual Leser gleichermaßen

5.0 out of 5 stars Action packed Naval warfare novel
Reviewed in the United States on 18 July 2011
Jeff Edwards introduces us to Captain Bowie and the USS Towers in this suspense filled military thriller. The action sequences are amazing and will keep you riveted to your favorite reading chair for hours on end. The descriptions that he gives us of different officers, Chief Petty Officers and the enlisted are amazingly accurate and give you the feel of being there and living in their world. You will feel their fear, you will understand their desire to be anywhere but on a warship with a dozen in-bound missiles screaming your way.

If you want a feel good book that has America being the dominant military power you will be disappointed. The British Navy and the American Navy take huge hits from 4 German submarines and their accompanying aircraft. There are lots of people who die. Many of them shouldn't, but they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Edwards paints a picture of the problems of a collection of nations who share allied status and peacetime peacemaking duties, such as with NATO. The down side is that you share your military strategy with all the others and if they decide to turn against you they know your playbook, your weapons, your rules of engagement and even know a bit about the personality of your commanders. This gives them a huge advantage, especially if they strike first and fast and without any regard for human life or the rules of warfare.

A further item you will want to track as you go through the novel is the actual fact that peoples ego's get in the way. The President of the United States is not immune to an attack of ego and it will cost many people their lives. An older Naval Captain who can't think outside of the box will doom his crew to a deadly fate. Even a good Captain who does think outside the box still ends up in the cross-hairs of the enemy and it doesn't end well.

So, how do you go about killing an enemy determined to kill and defeat anyone that gets in their way? You do it with military hero's who are just ordinary people going about their jobs and fighting against huge odds to make a difference and keep the world from going to war. That's what Jeff Edwards gives us in this novel. There are plenty of things to think about, plenty of politics to second guess, plenty of naval warfare tactic's to second guess and then the reality of 'maybe we aren't the world's foremost military power anymore!'

    Now for the story;

The German economy is struggling and they need oil. To get oil they determine to break the rules of NATO and a trade embargo against a Middle East Dictator and agree to sell him four brand new world class missile submarines. These are the best the German's have to offer. They believe that the deal will secure their economic future. So they load up the four sub's with as many torpedo's and missiles as they can and send them off to the Middle East.

The British and American Navy's catch wind of what is happening and try to blockade them from getting there and all havoc breaks loose. No one believes that the Germans would attack an allied military vessel. But they are wrong. The British loose one ship and have another heavily damaged at the first encounter. American then jumps in and gets their tails handed to them as the German's heavily damage one of America's best Aircraft Carriers by their shrewd tactics.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that we start the whole thing off with a biological warfare attack against a British Embassy. Unbelievable, or is it?

The novel concentrates now on the men and women of the USS Towers and the other ships in their attack group who get tasked with finding and sinking the German submarines. The cat and mouse game that ensues and the battle encounters that take place are amazingly described by Edwards. He does a wonderful job of pulling us into each of the American vessels and showing us how they work.

One little mistake can mean the difference between success and WWIII. A sailor more interested in getting topside to grab a smoke and flirt with a "hot" female shipmate means that he doesn't secure a simple test valve and the ensuing leak of hydraulic fluid will condemn the ship to becoming dead in the water right at a critical moment.

It is details like this that make Edwards work very realistic.

The final battle scene is a nail bitter and you will love it. I won't give it away because you won't know how this is going to end until you get to the final page.

I loved this book and only sad that it took me a few years to learn about Jeff Edwards work. I look forward to all of his books to come.

    Enjoy!
