At eighteen, Milly was up for anything. So when a friend asked her to marry him just so that he could stay in England, she didn't hesitate. To make it seem real she dressed up in wedding finery and posed on the steps of the registry office for photographs.

Now, ten years later, Milly is a very different person. Engaged to
Simon - who is good-looking, wealthy and adores her - she is about to have the biggest and most elaborate wedding imaginable, all masterminded by her mother. Nobody knows about her first marriage, so it's almost as though it never happened - isn't it?

But with only four days to go, it looks as though Milly's past is going to catch up with her. Can she sort things out before her fairytale wedding collapses around her? How can she tell Simon? And worse still, how can she tell her mother ...?

Review

Gutsy prose and an excellent ear for social comedy ― Independent

From the Author

I have written many novels over the last ten years and am probably best known for my comedies under the name Sophie Kinsella. However, long before I dreamed up the Shopaholic series I wrote seven books under the name Madeleine Wickham (my real name).
I'm often asked why I write under two names and the reason is that these books are in a different style from my Sophie Kinsella books.
Although I have not written as Madeleine Wickham for several years, I am immensely fond of these novels and hope you enjoy this one!

Madeleine Wickham (aka Sophie Kinsella)

This is a good book which is well written. The plot is a little far fetched and predictable but once you get over that the book is great. Enjoyed getting to know Molly, Simon and the other characters in the story. Simon comes from a wealthy background and is an only son. His mother had passed away years ago, but his relationship with his father was tense. The wedding is called off but the very quickly it all happens. What I did not like was the use of curse words jury still out as to whether or not I will read any more of this author's books.

Couldn't stop reading this. Stayed up late at night (thank God for the Kindle version!). A real emotional, real-life story, that touches on what true love is and how it changes and transforms all those who dare to take the risk to love truly and with abandon.

I love books by Sophie Kinsella so I was quite excited when I realised that she also had books under her name Madeleine Wickham.

It starts off with easy going, fun loving Milly who meets a young gay couple. One of them men is American and needs to stay in the country so despite only knowing them for a few days, she agrees to marry him. Skip forward and Milly is about to get married - without actually getting divorced from her American husband. Milly panics and she tries to hunt down her husband with her wedding only days away.

The story is a nice enough story and I did enjoy the ending. My favourite part of the story was actually not the part about the main characters but small parts involving the gay couple and Milly's sister. My problem with this story is that I found the idea that someone would just assume that getting married again without previously getting divorced was okay, was just a bit unrealistic. Milly (the main character) was not a character I liked that much because I just found her irresponsible and couldn't get over her excuse about "forgetting" she was already married. I didn't like that she put on a completely fake persona for her fiancé because I felt that if she felt the need to do this then they shouldn't be getting married to him anyway. There are a few unexpected parts which was done well and overall it was okay though I probably won't re-read it, which for me, is unusual.

I was really enjoying this book until about a quarter of the way through when I (as it turned out when I got to the end) that the ending would be very predictable. This led to me not enjoying the second half of the book enough. A good light read though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding a Way Back to Redemption
Reviewed in the United States on 11 July 2013
When I read the title and the brief little synopsis before purchasing the book, I was expecting a cute little summer read. A sort of a romp of a story through wedding planning, bridesmaids, just a silly little story. What I got was a much deeper, reflective story on secrets and the effects of hiding our true selves from the world.

Milly Havill had a fun summer ten years prior with two good friends. Her actions to try to help someone, come back to haunt her at a time, when it really matters.

Fast forward ten years and Milly is preparing to have the wedding of the century to the son of one of Britian's most successful businessmen. Simon Pinnacle seems a bit of a perfectionist and Milly, who adores Simon, is willing to remake herself to fit Simon's perception of her.

Milly's mother, Olivia is caught up in the wedding preparations and the idea of being connected to the Pinnacle family. She also runs a successful bed and breakfast and it sounds as if she is truly a great hostess making certain her guests are well cared for when visiting. James, her husband is an accountant. He is beginning to feel lost, as if their lives together have grown apart and they are heading on separate paths. James wants more.

Isobel is the older sister, a successful career girl, blazing trails and making her parents proud. Until she discovers that her life is taking a huge turn.

Harry Pinnacle is Simon's father. Harry abandoned Simon's mother when Simon was young. Without his wife, Harry became successful in business. Simon, has been trying to best him and make a way for himself. One thing is certain is that Simon is certain that he will definitely best his father in the love and family area.

Rupert, is one of Milly's former friends from ten years prior in Oxford. Rupert was uncomfortable. Rupert set out to remake himself, but has he been truly happy? His current life requires some reflection and decisions, when Milly comes crashing back in to his life, looking for their mutual friend Allan.

Alexander is the photographer, back in Milly's life, after ten years, ready to photograph the wedding of the century. However he knows Milly's secret and teases her about it.

Esme is Milly's beloved godmother. She is always there to comfort, console and support Milly. But, is she truly as wonderful as she seems?

This story examines the secrets and winding and unwinding of lives. How sometimes, we remake ourselves to make ourselves attractive and acceptable to others. How sometimes we lose our way to our true selves in a search for happiness. Then, only to wonder are we truly happy as we are now.

Don't get turned off by this title. And, don't expect a sweet summer read. Do, however, read this book for an examination of how some people discovered who they truly were and find themselves back to redemption.

5.0 out of 5 stars libro molto piacevole
