For more than four years, Martin McGartland lived the astonishing double life of a secret agent. To the IRA, he was a trusted Intelligence Office and an integral member of an active service unit. To the British Government however, he was known only as 'Agent Carol'. Martin McGartland is credited by British Intelligence with saving the lives of at least fifty people. Every time he tipped off the authorities, he risked detection and yet, heroically and fearlessly, he continued to pass on life-saving information. Finally, his cover was blown. Martin was taken from Sinn Fein headquarters in Belfast to an IRA safehouse for questioning and almost certain execution. Though guarded by armed men, in a desperate bid for freedom, he dived from a third floor window...This breathtaking story is now a major film starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess.

Martin 'Marty' McGartland (AKA Agent Carol) was born in Belfast on 30th January 1970. He grew up on the Ballymurphy estate. Over the years he witnessed the dreadful violence and intimidation used by the IRA towards their own people and community. Most of the people in the local community lived in fear from the IRA bully-boys. Martin took a stand against the IRA from a very young age.

In 1987, at 17 years of age, Martin was recruted by the Security Services.

In 1989, age 19, he was persuaded by the Security Services to infiltrate the IRA in Belfast.

For more than four years, Martin McGartland lived the astonishing life of a secret agent. To the IRA, he was a trusted Intelligence Office and an integral member of an active service unit. To the British Government however, he was known only as Agent Carol. Martin McGartland is credited by British Intelligence with saving the lives of at least 50 people. Though guarded by 3 armed terrorist, in a desperate bid for freedom, he dived head first from a third floor window.

In June 1999 the IRA shot Martin 6 times outside his safehouse in the North of England. However, the IRA gunman got more than he bargained for - once again Martin McGartland showed incredible courage by hurling himself at the terrorist even as the 9mm bullets were smashing into his body. The IRA terrorist panicked and fled. The IRA had only tracked Martin down after Northumbria Police and the CPS had read out Martin's name and home address in open court. To this day - Northumbria Police, MI5 and the British State continue to cover up IRA involvement in Martin's attempted murder and also his 1991 kidnapping.

McGartland - whose first best-selling book, Fifty Dead Men Walking, tells the remarkable true story of how he infiltrated the IRA and saved more than 50 people from certain death. Martin is accepted by many to be one of MI5's best spies in Northern Ireland during the late 1980's and early 1990's.

Martin's second Book, Dead Man Running, is also available on Amazon. It tells the true story of a secret agent's escape from the IRA and MI5. Read more om Martin's website; www.martinmcgartland.co.uk - catch up with Martin on Facebook.

There has also been a Film (Fifty Dead Men Walking), however, Martin disowned it - he refused to be involved with the making of the film. "The film is as near to the truth as earth is to pluto. It is 99% fiction. It is IRA, terrorist propaganda film. It was even made with the help of the IRA members." This is a true story of a Catholic boy growing up in Northern Ireland during the troubles, his involvement with the British security services and the IRA.
The story is well told though the writing style lacks finesse. It is written and break- neck speed and is difficult to put down.
It does purport to be a true story, though to me there were some glaring omission and slightly too much self praise.
However this is a real page turner and does convey the atmosphere of Ireland in the 80's and 90's.

This book has a great ring of truth about it. I speak as an ex British soldier with seven years of service in the hard areas of the conflict both in Londonderry and Belfast, I respect what the author has written, he acted often alone, while military units work in unison and share danger; he faced it alone. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Troubles, whether they want insight, or perhaps they served in Northern Ireland themselves and want to see what life was like serving in the opposition and at the same time being a double agent. This is one of the best books on NI that I have read. I recommend it most heartily to any of the hundreds of thousands of ex soldiers or civilians caught up in the troubles. Well Done Martin McGartland for what you did during the period of the book and thank you for an excellent read.

I can confirm that what you have read within this book,is a very blunt BUT honest portrayal of a member of the British Armies “intelligence units” working in the FULL KNOWLEDGE of the Establishment(Government)during my service within one of them(1992/94)and YES it is ALSO a very true statement that when you are “SNLR” you are dropped like a VERY HOT STONE(SNLR=services no longer required) and as for myself and my No2 we had it DRILLED INTO OUR HEADS that if at any time we were compromised then we were BOTH told that we would come under the realm of a term that was used often during the 1st/2nd world wars “DM”=Deniable Mission, and upon my discharge from service I received the STANDARD red book(conduct/service book)MINUS the role that I played in the Province NOR was I given any “get out of jail free Contact Numbers”

I bought this book as i have served in Ireland myself and whereas i could relate to some of the story i found it very hard to believe some of the things related in this book. I'm sure a lot of it was over dramatised and quite frankly, made up.
All this said, i did enjoy the book, and the only reason i am giving 3 stars is because of the dreadful spelling mistakes and totally wrong words put in that made the story hard to follow. Has the author ever heard of proof reading??

This is the first book I head read around the IRA as I had a fear that in some way their actions, and those of the British Army would be glorified; how glad am I that I decided to read it.

From the word go, Martin is honest, likeable and very endearing. Throughout the book I learned more & more of the troubles and it's written in such a way that you can honestly see both points of view; albeit at no point ever glorified from either side. It's a very well written book that flows really well - the grammar and spelling at times leave a lot to be desired; however that just seems to be the norm for Ebooks. The emotion that is brought to life is exceptional and I could almost taste the fear at the end - the description of the last Christmas had me in tears - cracking read!

I'd highly recommend this book and simply can't wait to download the next book.

Okay, so I have not finished the book yet but so far I have been captivated and I am really enjoying reading it. I saw the film and even though I know the film is just fiction I knew I wanted to know more about Marty so I googled him, facebooked him, looked for info about him on twitter, you name it. On xmas day I bought both of his books and I am so glad I did. What he did was so brave and it is just such a terrible shame that he can never see his family again and that he has to hide out, even now. He saved 50, if not more, men from being killed by the IRA and for that he deserves to be given a medal. If it was possible, I would love to meet this amazing man and shake his hand for the heroic work he did. 10/10 for his true story xx

5.0 out of 5 stars Als britischer Agent im innersten Machtzirkel der IRA - Hochspannung bei der Lektüre garantiert
Reviewed in Germany on 13 January 2019
