From the Inside Flap
how a dog's unique and beautiful essence could open her heart and change her life. Her experience with Maggie created her belief that dogs are intelligent and emotional beings who can sense human thoughts.
From housebreaking to adolescent escapades and on through old age, Maggie's radiant and genuine spirit became interwoven with the fabric of Ms. Kairns' life. Through their journey together, Dawn Kairns experiences the joys of sharing life with a dog that so touched others as well as the profound grief that comes with the loss of her
beloved Maggie.

You know it when it happens. You think a thought and your dog responds. She knows what you're asking of her, even though you never trained her to do it. You recognize that your communication is beyond words, beyond training. How do you explain it? You peer into her eyes and know you are looking into the depths of a loving, advanced soul. You may wonder, as I did, who are you in there?
When Maggie and I are out hiking, running errands, or just hanging out being "girlfriends," I meet several people who have loved and lost such powerful relationships with their canine companions. They recognize that magic between Maggie and me, for once you experience it with your dog, you can't miss it when it appears before you. I see the longing in their eyes, the painful missing, and the ache of irreplaceable loss.
"You just made my day," one man wistfully tells Maggie when she greets him at the coffee shop.
Sometimes I see this man keep his distance, and he just nods at me--as though it's too unbearable for him to touch the pain of his loss at this moment. I imagine his own precious memories with his dog dancing before his eyes.
"Enjoy every moment you have with her," the gentleman at the coffee shop tells me.
I do enjoy her every moment. I know the day will come when I will walk in his shoes with that mournful longing, when I'll be forced to learn to live with her absence. But to know it intellectually and to live it, I would later find, have nothing in common. That day, as far as I am concerned, is so far in the distant future it doesn't even exist in my awareness.
As a child, I was taught that animals were inferior to humans. We were superior to all life on Earth. This teaching was inherent in both culture and religion. Maggie helps me challenge that belief. She shows me over her lifetime that she is an intelligent, emotional being with a huge presence. I learn to respect her as a being who I share this planet with--a different being--not a lesser being.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 July 2018This was a very moving book about a spiritual connection between human and canine. I loved reading about Maggie who had such an old soul. Animals are dismissed as 'just animals' but we are also animals.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 February 2015seemed a very short story would have liked a longer story line.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 January 2014Wonderful story of the bond between human and animal. Brought tears to my eyes as I have beautiful choc lab and can see parallels in their behaviour. They understand our emotions and their compassion shines through. Would recommend this book to anybody who has a dog, so they can understand better.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 December 2012too late in life for me to have another dog so I tend to drift towards doggie stories I loved this because it started at the beginning with choosing a puppy and although it was sad as well its was a real story.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 June 2013Started off well. Lovely story about the build up to and life with Maggie the black lab. Went down hill rapidly after the dog died. Too much talk about dreams and their meanings. Still got a couple of chapters to go but seriously thinking about giving up.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 March 2014Well written from the heart! To those who have been down this path countless times you can still equate with the grief! And once in a lifetime you may be blessed with one of a kind like Maggie! X

5.0 out of 5 stars A Moving and Memorable Tribute to a Best Friend
There are scores of books to choose from about dealing with the loss of your pet, or a tribute to a much loved dog. MAGGIE is both of those and so much more as it explores the human-animal bond and the way dogs can communicate with us without a word. Dawn had a special connection with Maggie and intuitively knew when something was terribly wrong even though she could not get a diagnosis from the vet. When Maggie is finally diagnosed, too late, with an aggressive cancer she feels guilt over not acting on her instincts but uses that painful life lesson to go on and make a difference in the lives of others. I connected with Maggie's story on so many levels and couldn't put it down. My daughter has a black lab who looks so much like Maggie and has health issues as do so many of this breed because of bad breeding and genetics. My sister lost a beloved shihtzu last Christmas to the same aggressive cancer that Maggie had. Because I lost my "soul dog" in 2002 to melanoma, I am now fanatical about checking my dogs for lumps and bumps to catch it early while still curable. In September it paid off when a small black lump was removed from my 12 year old dog Wookie's toe that had only appeared 2 weeks earlier - melanoma. This book will touch you deeply if you have ever loved a dog and you will learn the lessons of listening to your inner voice when it comes to sensing that something is just not right with them. Dawn has taken a deeply personal story of love and loss and shared it with all of us who are devoted to our dogs and want to help and make a difference for all of those who don't have a voice. After the loss of Maggie she went on to rescue an 11 year old Golden Retriever named Chloe who had lost her family. Senior dogs hold a special place in my heart, as my "MAGGIE" was an old dog named Sam that I adopted at 7 and shared 5 gloriously happy years together until I lost him to cancer also. If there are dog lovers on your Christmas list, "MAGGIE The Dog Who Changed my Life" should be in their stocking.

4.0 out of 5 stars A touching story
I was touched by the special connection between a woman and her dog. It is a joyful story about their relationship and a sad story as well. It is painful to lose a pet and the author describes her pain so vividly that it is hard not to tear up as the story unfolds. As any person in pain she blames herself, the doctors, and many other things for the events that caused the dog's death. She felt the need to take and share the blame for the events to deal with the painful loss. In my heart of hearts I think every reader can see that she did the best she could and always had the dog's happiness as the top priority. I was happy to read that she was able to take a new dog into her life.

4.0 out of 5 stars Feel good book.
As a dog lover I could empathise and feel everything that the writer wished to express. Connecting with animals is a gift not everyone has.
