I realised that I had read this book before some years ago. Someone must had leant it to me. While disappointed that I had purchased a book previously read, I none the less enjoyed reading it again, which says something. Well written novel. Be aware, though, that the characters are fictional, so although it is promoted as an historical novel, it is not really. It's a book of fiction set in the past.

Feeling in a "historical" mood recently, I snaffled this novel cheaply in a discount bookshop (sorry, Amazon!) settled with it - and, to my delight, was drawn in from the first page.

I knew it was the first novel of E.C. and frankly wasn't expecting to be engaged so firmly with it, but this author's skill was strong even "back then" and her characters instantly leapt off the page for me.

If only a few more "Guyon's" were around today ... his patience with the emotionally-scarred Judith was heart-touching, especially in an age where much younger wives were expected to fulfil their marital duty whether it distressed them, or not, many being mothers by Judith's own age on marriage.

Judith for her part slowly overcame her frozen horror of a more intimate relationship due to his patience, eventually manipulating Guy into their first bedding experience herself, and a real lovematch developed for them both.

I also liked the "older generation" romance thread too - Guy's father and Judith's abused mother developing their own romance, and eventual marriage.

And, as with all good romances, the bad-guy met his just desserts, but not at the hands of Guy, at those of Judith herself(!) I liked that bit ... a lot!

By the last pages, the scene is already set for the sequel novel "The Running Vixen" which is next on my "E.C." reading-plan.

A wonderful start for the career of this talented author.
What a fantastic way to learn about medieval history and day-to-day life, too.

An interesting tale of chivalry, love, battle and lust. Could have done without the smooch and lurid detail as Guyon gets to know his very young bride. Guyon is a sterling, upstanding chap of sound principle, so he takes things slowly. The characters tend to be caricatures, but we must not forget that this was a first (published) novel. Conversation is formulaic, if not stylized. However there were several sections where the book "held" me, and it would be unfair to say I did not enjoy it. Research seems thorough and the writing is very competent. A Dramatis Personae and a few maps at the front would have helped me: Arundel sounds as if it is just up the road from Ravenstow, which, contextually, it can't be.

Set in the turbulent 12 Century this fascinating book tells the story of Guyon, Lord of Ledworth, andJudith of Ravenstow, his feisty young wife. I love Elizabeth Chadwick's books, and this re-read of The Wild Hunt doesn't disappoint.

I read this book about 15 years ago and decided to read it again as the great story has stayed in my mind all this time. I was not disappointed. The protagonists are strong and likable: Guyon is a confident Norman with a heart; Judith, his teen bride is a little untamed (in a good way) and just needs a gentle but loyal man to help her blossom! She does and it's great to see her become strong and passionate. The dialogue and interaction between the two is engaging and actually quite addictive.
This is certainly not a gentle love story: many things happen in this brutal Norman society which are shocking and disturbing. Judith and Guy face many challenges and threats, keeping you turning the pages.
I will now read some of Elizabeth Chadwick's other books, because if this one is anything to go by, they should be great stories.
