About the author

M. R. Mathias is a member of the Authors Guild who cares for his wife, a Breast Cancer Warrior who has Parkinson's. After raising two boys into fine young men, they and two dogs split their time between a modest smalltown home, and an apartment built on a floating dock on Lake Ultura (aka Lake Texoma) which foots into an amazing State Park brimming with all sorts of wildlife. Like the wizards of old, he tends to the animals who share the area and inspire the creatures in his works. He likes to fish, write, play guitar, and he builds all sorts of things out of reclaimed wood. He sold over two million eBooks most of them before eBooks were cool. His work is critically acclaimed, and has earned multiple literary awards, including a coveted Locus Poll nomination.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 March 2013I read this book in two sittings, sitting up late. I was gripped from the start and found myself totally absorbed by the fantasy world constructed so believably by the author. The characters are well delineated and convincing and the story moves along at a good pace. I'm often guilty of skipping bits, but read every single word with enjoyment and looked forward to the second book of the saga.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 January 2017An epic fantasy tale where loved characters can die. I enjoyed this story and its twists around the idea of a clueless King and an overzealous Prince. I think the main characters were realistic and sympathetic to the audience. My one criticism was that by the end we were losing a sense of scale. Everything had become so big and affected so many people that people died and were thrown aside as if by a hand of God. By the end, we were missing the close lens of pain which was so key to making the early chapters something special. There were close ups of loved characters in pain in the closing chapters, but the numbers of dead were not zoomed in upon as much.
I wonder what future books could add to the series rather than more of the same and think more could have been added to make this clearer. What kind of fight can we expect in coming books? As it is, I think the first book has satisfied me and I won't read on. I'm hovering around 3.5 stars for my overall rating.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 16 September 2013Absolutely love this book. It starts quite sedate, setting the scene and characters and you may think it is not going far but persevere, once the action starts it does not stop, I was so hooked.
The writing and some of the conversations are so down to earth, for a fiction book, it had me chuckling in places.
Give it a read, well worth it. It also has a peek preview into the next book which I am downloading now..
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 May 2012I really enjoyed the storyline and it could of been fantastic. The author has some fantastic ideas but i dont beleave he has the skill to bring them to life. There is not enough back story for the charecters and some things are left unexplained altogether. The story is extremly fast paced and is very rushed as if the author just wanted to get to the end. I beleave that there is going to be another book released soon but it is going to centre on only one off the dragoneers. I think the author should off made the first three books into four to give more detailed descriptions and more back storys, but, on the other hand, the books are inexpensive and if you want something just for train journys and such then these series of books will do the job nicely.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 September 2013The start of another great tale. I really enjoyed The Wardstone trilogy and this book didn't disappoint either.
The story is easy going and sucks you right in to the world, and adventures, of Jenka, Zah and Ricky with a healthy dose of emotion along the way.
Grab it and enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2015I bought this book on a bit of a whim and didn't regret it, it hooked me from early on in the book. there are some real twists though out the book that keep you wanting to read more.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2019A young archer takes aim at a majestic old stag, hoping to feed himself, his mother and make some money, but a baby dragon has ideas for a feast of his own.
As the tale unfolds, expect the unexpected and enjoy the dragon rides of your life, complete with magic, trolls, orcs and ogres.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 February 2017This is a well written story. You cant say for sure that you know everything that will happen eventually. Sequence is good. Got confused with some.of the names though, but with so many characters who wouldnt be? Nice one

4.0 out of 5 stars I would keep reading the series...
Good, solid read, if a bit slow. Just my opinion though! Simple and straightforward story-telling that, while not keeping me glued to the book, kept a steady pace and was satisfying.

3.0 out of 5 stars a nice fantasy book
I bought this book after reading its free prequel, which I found great. This book begins very promising, and it stays all right, but it just doesn't deliver all that I was hoping for at the end. It's nice, but it doesn't get you craving for more.

Terrible writing

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to a unique series
What I like best about Mathias's books is his consistent and total image of a world and its history. This book (and the whole series) is no exception. While he stays true to standard lore of aloof elves, dense ogres, and evil demons, he is interestingly on the side of dragons. In this world, dragons can be lower creatures that resemble what we usually picture when we hear the world: fire-breathing, menacing creatures that just want to kill us. But he also writes of a purer branch of dragons that can speak with humans and form true communities and beliefs. Of course, this book being number one in the series, it involves the characters discovering this higher branch and learning how important they are as allies in an upcoming war. Because the nature of these higher dragons isn't understood at first, the dragoneers (those who bond with them) must fight with their fellow humans just to be heard. Eventually cooler heads prevail, but not after some drastic measures are taken.
It seems as though there are fewer main or prominent supporting characters in this book than in some of his others, but it allows the reader to get to know each one a little more. And this book introduces the personalities and culture of the dragons, something I really enjoy. And the characters range in prominence from normal men and women to royalty. It never hurts to throw people from completely different backgrounds together in a story; it adds depth and smaller struggles that keep the plot moving. It also creates opportunities for the story line that wouldn't exist otherwise. Mathias does a great job at setting up who the dragoneers are and how they discover this bond; no two are alike and it's not entirely unbelievable that they all come into their own around the same time.
The story is interesting and involves a lot of action. It develops a little slowly at first, but there is a lot to learn about the culture and beliefs of the world. You can't appreciate how much of a 180 it is for the dragoneers until you fully understand how thoroughly dragons are hated in this world. And the book is the first in a series, so not everything is tied up at the end, though many things are. It leaves enough open to encourage you to buy the next one. And, as someone who has read the final book, I can promise that it all ties together well in the end. Just like with the others Mathias series I've read, he makes sure to give the reader closure (though you may sometimes wish things turned out a little differently for one character or another). This book builds up anticipation throughout and you won't be disappointed in where it leaves off. You'll just want to get the second book soon after.
Mathias's writing style is very clear and not very heavy-handed. One issue I have with a lot of fantasy novels is that the writing is so dense it takes four times as long to get through than lighter novels. And many writers like to go into such intense detail that you find yourself thinking, "I don't really care what every house's armor looks like; I'm going to go do something else." You won't have this problem with Mathias. He balances his storytelling so you don't get excessive exposition at the beginning, though you get what information you need to understand what's going on. And he has such control over his imagined world that you never get lost or think he's changed things up on you. And if you've read other books of his, you'll find that he keeps the feel of the world the same in all his books. The different series take place at different times so it allows some freedom for change in politics and whatnot, but you never feel like you're in a completely new place with no map.
I absolutely recommend this book, and the whole series. While I enjoy all of his work, I think this series is my favorite because of the intense, positive involvement of dragons. I know it's not the first story to include dragons in a positive light, but those stories are uncommon and any off the beaten path of lore and fantasy is going to catch my attention. Give this series a chance and you'll see what I mean. Mathias has added an element that many of the biggest fantasy writers haven't and it makes a much bigger impact on how fantasy writing goes than you might imagine.
