WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

★★★★★ "J.R. Rain weaves a tapestry of interesting, believable characters with a dynamite plot. You will root for the heroes, want to cry a bit in the ending chapters. This book makes you wonder, what if the ark really was found in this day in age. What would society believe as a whole after a find like that was authenticated?
The Lost Ark has a lot of action for those of us that like that genre and plenty of mystery." ―Amazon reviewer

★★★★★ "I have personally been in the Land of Noah and have been mesmerized by the beauty and mystery of Mount Ararat. My adventure was calm and rather spiritual. J.R. Rain’s
The Lost Ark is far from calm. It is a thrill ride from the first few pages! Reads like an Indiana Jones story. I read it in two sittings."―Amazon reviewer

★★★★★ "
The Lost Ark was riveting, you were rooting for Sam and Faye to survive while searching for her father and the lost ark. An excellent adventure story that I truly hope to see in a movie someday!" ―Amazon reviewer

★★★★★ "
The Lost Ark by J.R. Rain is an excellent read! I love a book full of action and adventure and a great hero and heroine. This book has it all and the best of villains!" ―Amazon reviewer

★★★★★ "
The Lost Ark is jam-packed with adventure, action, and a little romance thrown in for good measure. The main character, Sam Ward, is a typical J.R. Rain tough guy with an off beat sense of humor. I would LOVE to see a movie made from this book." ―Amazon reviewer

THE LOST ARK J.R.Rain (Kindle Edition)

This is the first of J. R. Rain's novels that I have sampled and overall it stands up very well compared to similar archaeological thrillers which I had read previously. The author's style is casual and easy to read, the first person narrative peppered with humour and witticisms and the protagonist comes across as a likable character who, although multi-talented, makes mistakes, doesn't always win every fight and seems to survive on his good luck and ability to see the amusing side of every situation.

I have noted that the author also writes screenplays and that is exactly how this novel plays out, as though it was written for television or a film, just the right amount of humour, action and archaeological interest with an open ending just waiting for a sequel.

The action is set around Mount Ararat and a search for a missing archaeologist on a quest to find the remains of the Biblical Noah's ark; and there is plenty of action, wild animals, natural disasters, quick triggered Turkish soldiers and Arab terrorists stand between the explorers and their goal.

I personally like my archaeological thriller to be grounded at least partially in reality; it is very difficult to have a successful conclusion to a fictional story when finding the sought for treasure would have a world wide cultural impact and can leave the reader feeling that the boundary has been crossed between fiction and fantasy, proof that Atlantis was real or that a major diety does exist would be unlikely to go un-noticed; but Mr. Rain handles the archaeological parts of the tale well and believably and without the use of over the top and impossible explanations.

One or two action sequences are a bit far fetched the characters bouncing from one near fatal disaster to the next, but the scenic description are excellent although I would have liked to see a guest appearance from one of the giant Kangal, the Kurdish sheep dogs, which are probably the greatest danger to humans in the rural areas around the mountain.

Overall a very enjoyable read and I shall now seek out and download more of Mr. Rain's works.

The Kindle Edition: A professionally produced e-book well formatted and without any spelling or typing errors that I noticed 5/5

An intriguing plot, fairly well written, pacey and with sprinkling of humour amongst the action, and all set in a stunning location. Sounds like it all should add up to a very good book, right? Well, I did enjoy it but the plot seemed to a bit crazy, and the events that unfold just get more and more unbelievable as the book progresses. The main irritation for me was that the 'hero' of the story puts Jack Reacher to shame with his ability to survive any mishap and defeat any enemy. Plunging into icy waters on a snow-capped mountain, getting shot, or simply knocked out, he shakes it all off with ease, and while the survival skills of a mountain guide are no surprise, being able to take on armed soldiers, be comfortable with various guns and have the ability to fly a helicopter stretch things a little far. Still, 3 starts for the entertainment value!

As the previous reviewer said I also didn't know what to expect from this book / Author. However, I based my decision to purchase it on the fact that the previous reviewer said it was like the work of James Rollins and Andy McDermott. I can completely agree. It is an adventure book set on a mountain where Noah's Ark apparently landed. The "hero" is a mountain guide/photographer who is hired by the daughter of an archaeologist who has gone missing on the mountain whilst searching for the Ark. Some parts are slightly far fetched but for those who enjoy the work of the above two Authors you will love it. Without giving anything away this book has all the makings of a great adventure book with bad guys, guns, mountain tunnels, glaciers, etc - lose yourself for a few hours - I did!

I got this book because it was either free or very cheap. It was a surprisingly good adventure story with some searching for the historical Noah's Ark.
I would read other books with the hero, Sam Ward, in them.

I had never read a book by this author before, but it will not be the last. A very strong story, well written and very gripping. A book that was impossible to put down. Not like some stories of a similar style this one was action from the first page to the last page. If you like escapism this is the book for you.

I got this on Kindle a while ago. I read about half of it and just got increasing irritated by its thin plot and predictability. It is also not that well written and for me anyway, lacked any suspense or thrill. Sorry but not even good enough for a holiday read, which is why I got it in the first place.

Pity Harrison Ford has aged, he'd play this perfectly. Not an archaeologist this time but a guide, hunting the lost Ark accompanied by beautiful feisty woman searching for her father and beset by baddies. The lead character is well drawn with some background and some nice asides and oneliners, though the others are sketchy, and the setting in Turkey comes across well with some quite memorable support characters. The story holds up well as they climb Mt Ararat and, after various clashes with the baddies find first the father then the Ark (cue Sean Connery as daddy).
But the Ark is disappointing - too well preserved to be believable and even has wall paintings - and then it turns into a shoot-em-up. The hero just happens to be a helicopter pilot, daddy can handle a gun, the baddies cant shoot straight and the villains come to sticky ends. Almost as if the author was considering film rights and realised he was short on spectacular action. Cue helicopters, missiles etc.
So started well, shame it didn't stay on the same track. But Very readable and I'll check out others.by this author.

This is a fun read, not to be taken too seriously. Think Indiana Jones searching for and finding Noah's Ark while fighting through many perils and fighting many bad guys. Quick pacing, great action scenes. This one is pure head candy.

Very intriguing particularly when entering the ark, occasionally far fetched in some areas of physical endurance but well worth reading.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was ok
Reviewed in the United States on 21 January 2012
This book was eh ok to me. The sense of adventure was what kept me going. However if the plot was not as active, I would have walked away. For at least the first half of the book, the two main characters, Sam Ward and Faye Roberts, addressed each other by first and last names. I would have understood if they addressed each other by their full names for the remainder of the chapter Faye was introduced. But they continued on for many chapters. Another thing that I found kind of found distracting was that the characters repeated comments or actions a little too often, this tapered off near midway through the book. I found myself saying "wait didn't Sam just say that?", flip back a handful of pages, and yep, there it is.

If J.R. decided to extend Sam's travels to a series, I would most likely read it.
