Narnia… a land frozen in eternal winter… a country waiting to be set free.

Four adventurers step through a wardrobe door and into the land of Narnia, a land enslaved by the power of the White Witch. But when almost all hope is lost, the return of the Great Lion, Aslan, signals a great change… and a great sacrifice.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is the second book in C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, a series that has become part of the canon of classic literature, drawing readers of all ages into a magical land with unforgettable characters for over fifty years. This is a stand-alone read, but if you would like to explore more of the Narnian realm, pick up The Horse and His Boy, the third book in The Chronicles of Narnia.

I wasn't interested in reading as a child and now I'm a 32 year old adult I love reading and do so every day. I only wish I'd have tried out books when I was a child and this one in particular I wish I had given a go.

I'm glad I've read it now as it was a fantastic story and one of the greatest ever written! I was addicted to it from the moment I started it and loved it!

I'm going to see the stage show next month at the King's Theatre in Glasgow and I'm very excited for that!

Read with my 7 yo daughter, though I also read and enjoyed this story as a child. It’s an enjoyable read, though the clashes and conflict seem easily resolved. Though I knew it was coming, the deal made between the witch and the lion, when it came time to pay for the crime, made me emotional. I can see why this story is still a beloved classic. She also enjoyed the story and rated it 5* in her own reading tracker, and I’ve very much enjoyed reading it with her.

The classic CS Lewis fantasy novel and part of the 7 books in the chronicals of Narnia. Yes, seven books. Most people have read this and Prince Caspian, a fewer go on to the Voyage of the Dawn Trader and even fewer any further. the full list is, in order:

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
    Prince Caspian.
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
    The Silver Chair.
    The Horse and His Boy.
    The Magician's Nephew.
    The Last Battle.

Some are better than others and they all have a similar theme and Lewis has been criticised for his religious overtones that are spread liberally throughout the books, but I'm not sure that anyone under 10 will be that interested in that.

Worthy of a read, but I must say I enjoyed the movie more.

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is something really quite special. It's a children's book, of course, and high fantasy, but it's also a miniature epic, a sweeping and powerful tale of good and evil.

The novel introduces to Narnia just as if the reader was one of the characters. There's no pretension to the book; it is narrated by C S Lewis as if he were sitting by the fireplace reading it aloud, complete with little asides and opinions, and that's one of its greatest strengths. Not only does Lewis's voice allow him to conversationally describe richly-drawn creatures and places, it also means he can be direct in describing character's emotions. There are many themes at the heart of the story - love, faith and forgiveness to name but a few - and the omniscient narration means the subtley of those concepts won't be lost on younger readers.

Some familiar structures within the book might bypass children, but adults will be able to recognise several powerful scenes in the book. Aslan, the Lion of the title and one of the most iconic characters in literature, is a carefully wielded force in the story. Introduced through rumour and allusion before making his true appearance in the final third, he's a wise and powerful character that parallels gods, kings and even Christ. Though the power of Aslan's movements in the tale will still possess the wallop to affect younger readers, it's adults who will appreciate the sheer scope of what Lewis has achieved here.

Epic though it is, the novel is comparatively small. What is most surprising is that the story is not short - it follows several characters through different plot strands and never feels as if it's compromising on description. Lewis is able to communicate his vision with careful language, so that the story is not slowed by any unnecessary weight. The plot arcs are fairly straightforward but well planned, driving the story on as characters meet and part and meet once again. It's a joy to read, with never a dull moment.

Compact and accessible as it is, the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is a scaled-down epic that loses none of the impact of a full-sized saga. It's enchanting, moving and comforting, scary, immersive and thought-provoking. A true masterpiece and classic of literature.

Coming in at #9 in the BBC Big Read is a children’s classic, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S.Lewis. If, like me, you are of a certain age you will remember the BBC adaptation well. For me, the White Witch in the book is always the White Witch from this production. I felt super nostalgic reading this again.

This is the first published novel in the Chronicles of Narnia series, but is actually volume 2, set after the events of the Magician’s Nephew. It is fine to read as a standalone novel, but the author does recommend reading all the books in order. And this is a nice thing to do as it explains a little bit more about some of the items in Narnia, such as as why the lamppost is there when Lucy first enters Narnia.
At this point, you may be forgiven for thinking that apart from a little snow, how does this fit into Christmas? Christmas nostalgia and snow aside, this book is a Christmas book and I’m stamping my feet until you agree! The first reason is all of the magic; talking animals, stopping for tea, an adventure in a magical world only accessible through a wardrobe filled full of fur coats. There’s a sleigh with bells, Turkish delight. Still not convinced? Well Father Christmas makes a special appearance and hands out presents. My work here is done, this is a Christmas book.

The novel has a lot of religious imagery and parallels with the crucifixion of Christ. Even if you are not religious in any way, it is a wonderful children’s adventure. Tea, Cake and adventures in a magical world. I can entirely see how this found its place at number #9 on the BBC Big Read. It is certainly well deserved.
